I am deeply passionate about both technology and the outdoor life. I find joy in utilizing the God given natural resources around me for artistic expression, whether I'm crafting rustic decor, furniture, or small buildings. I believe in working smarter, not harder, often blending technology with hands-on DIY approaches. When I'm not architecting software solutions or writing code, you'll find me in the woods or my workshop, indulging in woodworking, maple sugaring, logging, sawmilling, hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and woodlot development.

Just found your channel Enjoyed it Keep up the good work
Much appreciated!!!
aha. nice.
no wax on the ends?
I painted the ends, it doesn't look like it though in the video.
WOW those toolpaths are something else
🎉
Thank you Cory. It turned out Beautiful !
I would have my feet crossed resting on my fire ring every night if weather permitted...
Love your lumber store.
Love watching Abby there beside you.
Wherever I go, she goes
The hills are so pretty!!!
I've done that before, I also just let the fire go out sometimes, open the door and it let's cold air in and let the fire burn right out, then drain the pan into a smaller turkey fryer pot and finish the syrup in that
This is very relaxing to watch 👍👍👍
Hey Corey! Looks like a fine day in the woods. I’m not hearing Cicadas in your woods. We are being serenaded in mid- Missouri. Not sure which ones they are. There are so many different cycles, but wondering most about those 13 and 17 year ones they’ve been talking about in the news. We get some cicadas most years, but these are special. From now until the middle of June supposed to potentially be trillions! North Carolina is so beautiful. I would love to live there. It should be a wonderful thing to have a cabin out on your property. Do you have bears?
I haven't heard a single cicada yet here. I cannot remember exactly when it is that I usually hear them, but it seems like its usually mid-summer. I have heard that southern and possibly eastern NC it is a different story. It will be interesting to see if the cicada situation ends up being any different up here in the mountains than usual this year.
How to joint a board in only 25 minutes!
I just bought a bosh router plate for mine. Then bolted the rails to the slider things. Works great. I’ve been using it for about 3 years. It gets tricky when you have to bolt some of the sb 25 rails to the sb 20’s. I do have to run a length adapter though for the flattening bit. I need to do some upgrades to mine soon. Good video
Not confusing and very helpful!
Great Idea. What software do you use to make the video that shows the mouse movements?
I'm using Movavi Video Suite that has a "Record computer screen" feature. Its not the best software out there, but more affordable than other products out there.
@@coreylasley Thanks Corey. i had no idea what words to use to search for this type of software.
Awesome thank you for sharing your art and experience:)
A very strange season. In Vermont, it’s been to cold during the day. When an ideal day shows up, it’s followed by a freezing day. So I have not had any decent flows yet. Need ideal temps. The draught does affect us. In PA we have seen sugar running at 2.5 percent but with reduced flow. I am thinking about not tapping this year so I can work on a new sugar shack and arch.
Seems to be a really strange season for just about everyone I have talked to who is into maple syrup making. I actually got a little more flow last week, then nothing again, and the temp shifts have been fairly consistent. I cannot put my finger on what is so different from last year to this year, outside of warmer temps in January. I sure hope things get back to normal next year.
Please explain: what sugar sand made up of. I was recently reading about how milk is processed to removed nasty little impurities like skin cells, fur, airborne dust, and whatever else. My grandpa kept a milk cow so he could have raw milk. My husband’s family were dairy farmers . He told me they all started buying milk at the grocery store after the Michigan Milk Producers Association began a campaign to raise awareness about the potential harm of drinking contaminated fresh milk. Plus the fresh milk wasn’t fortified with vitamins.
So sugar sand is the crystallization of maple sugar that happens when the sap/syrup is brought to a boil. Its actually edible, but removed from syrup basically for "looks" The very first year I made syrup, I didn't know about this, and it eventually settles at the bottom of the jar. To most people who are not used to seeing it, it looks like something might be wrong with the syrup. It doesn't hurt the syrup and doesn't change the taste at all. Filtering it out is a pain because it clogs up the filters pretty quick.
I am learning things I didn't know by watching the process.
Hey there Corey! I like your perseverance with that sugaring process. And! I’m totally with you on the extra care in the reduction time.
Beautiful set up. What size is your sugarshack and what size is your evaporator? Please post you finishing the syrup. Love the set up.
Thanks! My shack is 12x12, I built it from lumber I milled from trees on my property. My evaporator is the Smoky Lake Maple Products Dauntless, the pan is 20"x48". I definitely plan on doing a finishing video this season.
VERY tough year to read when to tap. I've had one full week long run this season yet only... It got cold last weekend, trees are JUST starting to reactivate a bit, but not sure if it'll be too much with a late week heatwave into the 50's with no freezing nighttime temps. I tapped initially back on January 26th... Fingers crossed this isn't a dud of a maple season. (NE Ohio here).
Absolutely! It definitely sounds like its being a weird season all over this year. I hope you end up doing much better than I did, and you get a little more out of your season.
@@coreylasley 👍
Nice video Corey.
Maybe the drought played a major role?
I think it may be playing a role along with the odd temps we had through January.
Love Cory Lastley's woodeork
Fantastic video thank you. I’m a very small producer I have 20 to 25 taps. And fairly new to this. So can I get it close to syrup and freeze it and then do it all together at the end of the season? Thanks Fred
Nice! Yeah I'm a small producer as well, and that's exactly how I do it. The finishing process is the part of the process I don't really enjoy, so I usually boil it down enough, freeze it, and then finish it all in one shot. I'm only usually running about 30 taps. I've never noticed any difference in the final product if I've frozen it or not. It definitely makes it easier when you can pick the time to finish.
Great video Corey.. Love the story behind the antlers.
Awesome build!
thanks for the video! I am in Avery and cant wait to try to tap my maples next year. Was not sure if it was possible in the highlands or not.
Nice! I'm in Watauga, you can definitely do it. This year has been the worst out of the 5 seasons I've been doing it here. I'm wondering if the drought we had this past fall is the primary cause. Hoping next year things turn around.
Nice looking rig. Is there a gasket between the pan and arch?
Thanks! No gasket unfortunately. There is a little gap there, that if sealed, might help with efficiency. I've actually wondered about that since I got it 3 seasons ago.
Most excellent!! I live in western Maine and I just tapped my trees a day ago should be boiling at the sugar shack soon love this time of year
I'm with you, I just wish sugaring season lasted a little longer here in NC.
We are sugaring in Yancey County also.
Take my money! How much for a set of the plates you made?
I could probably make the plate set and ship it for $40
@@coreylasley how about making it out of some sort of composite?
@@matthews5560 yeah actually I'd like to try a few different materials: composite, acrylic, etc. I'll keep you posted.
We are not tapping ours this year. Looks like a drought again. I feel sorry for the people that might lose trees cause of that.
You must be in a hard hit area. We had a drought as well, but on the big old maple trees tapping them isn't much of a stress.
@@coreylasley Yeah I'm not sure. That's what I was told. I have a few Friends that do this.
I'm going to boil for 1st time in my new dauntless. Poked a couple holes yesterday. Running a little up here in maine. Good luck to ya
Its my 3rd season with the Dauntless, it definitely beats the old homemade setup I had before that. Good luck this season, I hope you make a bunch of syrup.
Just getting started here in NE Ohio for the season. First big sap run this week. 👍
Hope this is the start of a great season.
I know it's a lot of work...but it sure was relaxing to watch here.
Looks great!
Beautiful Piece Corey..
I definitely would have used it more. Not being critical, just would have used it more in my case
Thx for sharing
We love driving through the tunnel of trees that ends in Cross Village and going for lunch at Leggs Inn, great polish food and outdoor patio. Nice Village.
What fun! A wet Winter day spent with your Dad. That is really special. Great boards😊
Couldn’t you have ripped that edge on table saw? Would give 2 straight edges for glue up and then square the board to size.
Probably could. I don't use my old table saw much, and it is currently buried in my ultra cluttered shop 😅
Yep! I have had to do the same! I have also planed boards too wide for my planer.
Ah yes, I do a ton of planing and slab flattening with the cnc :)
What direction is the camera facing?
Almost directly east on both cameras.
Amazing how it matches. That machine is awesome.
Put you a couple lengths of 2" PVC pipe over your log stops when turning your cants you will find it slides easily and can't dig into the log. Mine are 18" long make yours what you want. Take them off when sawing.
Excellent idea! Thanks for sharing.
