History Calling

History Calling

Weekly history documentaries from a former university lecturer, with an emphasis on royalty & original sources.

WHAT MAKES ME DIFFERENT: I am a fully qualified historian from Northern Ireland (I get lots of questions about the accent!) whose videos are thoroughly researched and based on a reading of the original evidence. I will never just regurgitate Wikipedia entries at you and there will be no crazy conspiracy theories or claims of alien involvement here unless I'm debunking them. Just 100% history.

Music used in video intros: Friday Fugue, KZread Audio Library.

I think this was written during the Elizabethan era when efforts were being made to rehabilitate her image. I think it came about at the same time all the copies of portraits began appearing.

Enjoyed your programme. But if researchers follow your path, all Meghan Markle's allegations against today's RF will become historical "fact" Look at R3 & H7's records as People. Buck vindicated R3, Walpole in 18th & Markham in 19th (centuries post Tudor rule)

This morning (June 8, 2024), I just discovered I'm a direct descendant of Jacquetta through her marriage to Richard Woodville! I see where I get my integrity from - resilience runs in the family. It's ancestral.

Sorry but this is fake history because St Patrick is fake. He never existed. The documents referred to are 9th century documents written 4 centuries after Patrick was supposed to have lived. The originals don’t exist. How do you know st Patrick wrote these? In addition no historical figure writing of the period - Gildas, Columba, Adomnan, Columba or Columbanus - refer to Patrick. A manufactured myth. No evidence exists.

So, often treated in death as to how treated in life, particularly by the serial 'dispatcher' of Henry. Not exactly a good career move, to be one of Henry's wives. At least as a mistress, you could be discarded, and not generally in such a beheaded or divorced way. You would still have to put up with him, regardless.

Aww, come on...that would be Elizabeth. She kept England from becoming part of France and Spain. She is the only one who kept her head when she dealt with all of those around her!

It seems like Henry VII and Elizabeth of York both grew to genuine love each other, they were a true partnership who were faithful & loyal to each other, & she was 100% Team Henry in regard to him being the rightful English monarch. Remember reading somewhere that as King, Henry Tudor owed everything to Elizabeth of York, as she was the one who showed him how to be a Royal. From what is written about her, she did not involve herself in the Games of Thrones power struggles of her relatives & she also doesn't come across as being a power hungry, scheming plotter either. imo there are some parallels to Jane Seymour & Anne of Cleves in that she survived & rode out the storms around her by accepting her own fate & the fate of those around her, instead of going into figurative battles or fighting with them (like Anne Boleyn).

20:17 iirc there are reports of French being used between the male English monarch & consort in intimate settings, perhaps because French was considered to be the courtly love language? French was the lingua franca for European diplomatic relationships, perhaps there was also the perception in the English & Scottish court, of the French language, manners & fashion, as having a higher social cachet? Anne Boleyn & Mary, Queen of Scots, were sent to France as children & raised by other noble families as part of the French court, & seemed to parade their French upbringing & customs to their native English & Scottish Royal courts, perhaps? iirc did Henry VIII not write love letters in French to Anne Boleyn or those women he was wooing? I think also iirc one of the Georgian era monarchs was quoted as speaking French to his Queen as she or he lay dying? Can't recall the exact details, sorry, just recalling that there were reported instances of the English King & usually a foreign Queen speaking French to each other in private settings.

I don’t think there’s anyway any possibility that he survived that damn near impossible if he did, it would be a miracle. Let’s say he did survive the jump. He’s out in the middle of nowhere would have gotten back to wherever he was planning on going to. it’s just I don’t know. Makes no sense.

So basically I live on “sandringham time”. My car clock is 20 minutes later due to me always waking up late, so now I keep my math skills up and deduct 20 to the actual time so I know I am on time LOL

When I met my spouse he 'didn't participate' in Valentine's Day because he claimed it was a made-up holiday by the likes of Hallmark and others. It didn't take me long to figure out he was correct. I get a kick out of all the folks around me running around and panicking to get reservations and gifts at the last minute. People make such a big deal out of it and I find it funny.

I had never even heard of it. As usual an excellent exposition of it.Thank you It is interesting to hear that even though the British royal family has their own eccentricities.British people are very strict when it comes to punctuality. They make a great effort to be on time, and it is considered to be impolite to be late, even a few minutes.

You summed up the argument with the phrase 'a trickle of royal blood'. He was descended from John of Gaunt's mistress-turned-wife, none of their children were born in wedlock. Henry 'stole' the crown by conquest. And by bringing to England a multitude of Flemish, French and others who brought with them the 'French Pox' and other horrid diseases. And the fact that he had 'Perkin Warbeck' beheaded says that he also believed him to be his queen's younger brother. Not that any of that matters now though.

You forgot the real family name in your video. Philipp was a male descent from Greece, Danmark and there forth a member of the house of Schleswig Holstein Sonderburg Glücksburg! Try to spell that as an English and you have a tongue overkill😅 and I guess that was the initial idea to keep the house of Windsor!

Isn't it baffling how one man can have total neglect and disdain for his wife, while another man thinks the same woman is the most wonderful thing on earth. It's interesting to me how two people have completely opposite feelings of attraction towards the same woman.

I agree. I don't think anyone could ever understand for instance why the then Prince Charles wasn't more enamoured by Princess Diana. I suppose they just had a big age gap and few shared interests.

Ah, people claiming stupid things in YT comments. One from a few months ago, someone claiming they had a pedigree back to 1150 or something. Oh, and the 'proof' of that, was some pedigree at Ancestry/LDS. My questions were how have you proven the claims, how were you able to break through Henry's reformation, etc? Crickets, other that "it was in a tree at the LDS!". Really, as a genealogist for 35 years, I just had to walk away from stupid.

My grandma’s grandma’s grandfather lived to 105. He was born in Devon in 1797 and died in Cardiff in 1902. His daughter died at 91. There’s a newspaper article about him in the Cardiff Times, he remembered the jubilee of George III, he was a waiter at the banquet celebrating Waterloo, and reportedly drank his entire life and in his later life was granted one ounce of tobacco a week by the workhouse he ended up in. His parents both lived relatively long for working class blacksmiths in rural Devon, his father was born in 1770 and died age 73, and his mother was born in 1775 and died age 83

So why is it hidden that the Princess of Wales danced with Tom Selleck on the same night? Was Charley jealous of Tom Selleck? Travolta had two dances before Selleck asked for the next dance.

This is an old case so obviously I’d heard of it several times thought the years but didn’t know details, location, etc. in 2006 I bought a house in SouthWest WA. It was a fairly rural forested property with the Little Washougal river in the backyard. A tv show came on not long after I moved in. It described the most logical locations Cooper would have landed. Water Samples taken from the money found indicated it was probably from the river behind my house. Of course it got me thinking if Cooper didn’t survive that he could be still hung up in a tree with the money within a half mile of my house. That’s totally possible as the Forrest is thick and some areas never traveled.
