Wow incredible thanks for sharing the process
Love the painting ! Thank you
Thanks for the tips.
My pleasure
Thank You from Brazil!
Well done Cody really enjoyed that I’m a hobbyist and quite a few canvasses that I got frustrated with or not happy with the finished piece so great tutorial video 🖼️👨🎨
I love your painting style. Great tutorial!
Thank you so much!
Thankyou and I liked the finished product!
Thanks!
Cody, my challenge has always been to preserve the freshness of the plein air sketch on the larger studio pieces. I rarely go above 9x12 outdoors and very rarely try to "improve" the painting in the studio with details. That's the opposite of my methods but seems to work well for you based on what I see of your work online. For kicks and giggles you can see my plein air work sampled on the Sonoran Plein Air Painters webpage, under artist members under my name. BTW, you are welcome to come down here to paint with me anytime, I'll show you all my "secret" good spots, like in Saguaro National Park, to set up!! LOL. Later, Ron
Good one Cody, most artists I know, including moi, paint over the "older" canvas because what's on it "cannot suck enough", and you hope for a better result painting the second time. LOL ;D. Looks like you had a good one going before your move. Yes Sedona, been doing many small studies from photos, and few plein airs from my trips there. Difficult sometimes to get that foreground, for nice lead ins, on the spot, since many views are the "postcard" ones like you did here from the town! And of course, who wants to paint That horrid town, itself, Yuck!! I take the back roads that the Prius's can't go on, or go like the Pink Jeep does, even, for some good stuff "off the beaten path". Bonus: few folks go there to bother you while you paint outdoors, I've found. Cheers from beautiful Oro Valley, AZ. : )
Thanks Ron, and happy painting!
Beautiful painting. I will try to paint in soft pastels.
Magnifique avec de belles couleurs
Is this an oil painting? Was there much surface texture to cover? Did you scrape or sand any of it off?
No, I just let the texture of the old painting show through the new one. That doesn't always work if there's a lot of texture in the sky for example, but often it all works out fine.
So beautiful. Thank you for sharing.😊👍🏻
I really appreciate the concise nature of your video. I love watching artists videos, but some of them are so dang long and hard to figure out what to speed through. I just found your channel. I’m looking forward to looking at more videos.
Thank you Madison. I'm working on a couple more, and I agree, they need to be concise. do you have any requests for art videos?
Very useful, I’m sort of surprised that the smallest of adjustments can make such a big difference. Thank you.
If it makes even the smallest change in your perception of the image, you will paint it quite differently, and hopefully better!
Thanks for these useful tips! By the way, what do you do with the usable paint that's left on your palette? How do you keep it from drying out before your next session?
No problem. I don't worry if small piles of paint dry on the palette. I peel the 'skin' off with a palette knife and use what's left, though it's usually not as much as you think it will be. Mostly I just squeeze out fresh paint each time because you're not really saving that much, and my time is more valuable than a few pennies worth of paint.
Thank you, this demo has been very helpful!

Thank you for watching!
Excellent demonstration of reflective light and recessing shadows. Thank you.

Thanks Dan, and welcome. I intend to do more videos soon, after I have launched my new course next week called Mastering Light. You can read about that here if you're interested > kzread.info/dron/EqhfiBbnwyah9_zrh6TxBQ.html
What medium is this?
Oil
I've never used charcoal to draw shapes for oil painting, because I don't want to dirty my colors. Do you spray a fixative on your charcoal sketch and let it dry before starting to paint?
No I don't use fixative, I want the charcoal to fall away, or simply be absorbed by the paint. If you use a light touch, or blow off the excess before painting, it's never a problem at all.
very nice
Good job
Nice Printing.👌❤❤❤
Thankyou.
t Thanks, looking forward to your other videos
I appreciate that. More to come soon.
Hi, just came up on your work, love your bold colors. thank you
thank you. More to come soon, and have a look at my website codydelong.com
Your work is very pleasing to the eyes, I especially like your sensitivity to temperature and subtle touches of light.
Thank you so much. Do you paint?
@@codydelong1 Hi Cody, yes, I've been painting since the 80's, ran an atelier 10 yrs in Laguna Beach, 10 yrs Taos area, even opened a gallery in Cuenca Ecuador for 3vyrs. Currently, working on larger size landscapes in the western style. That said, your work draws me in because you have a beautiful sense of composition and a fresh clean original style, very painterly and freely executed, including lots of great technique. Jerome AZ is quite a unique place, very cool you lived there and absorbed those vistas. Cheers, jon
Interesting. I considered Ecuador before moving to Portugal. How did you like it, and where are you now?
Cody, I will look to find your contact info and email you direct. Be happy to fill you in on our experience as expats in EC, also would love to find out how you are doing in Portugal. Saludos, jon
Ma'sha'Allah ❤ Really lovely so beautiful drawing and painting ideas 👌 big big like this 👍 Stay well and stay connected always 😊
Thank you
Its a beautiful painting. It has inspired me to paint it. I am trying to follow you and reproduce it. I do not know how mush success I could achieve. I love to paint canyons. Can I send it to you on completion?
sure
Good tips. Thanks Cody !
No, usually I do with smaller pieces, especially if I'm painting outside, panels are easily transported, and opaque. But for larger sizes in the studio, I use stretched canvases.😊
Very cool studio! Glad things are going well. Looking forward to the next zoom lesson.
Thanks! Trying to get wifi in the studio here so we can do another class soon
Wow! Valuable information about sealing your canvas. Thank you so much.
I love your paintings. Do you always paint on panels?
No, I use stretched canvases for bigger sizes
Cody thought you were in Portugal ? Anyway great to see you painting again. One criticism of this video is the music is too distracting. Not needed. Cheers
Ok, good to know thanks.
And still living in Portugal, just spending 3 months in Brazil, then one month in Arizona. Returning to Portugal in mid November.
Waah sunder ❤
Stunning.
thanks you!
I recently tried sketching out in charcoal before painting in oils and it turned into a dark mess from the charcoal. Last time I do that. I think I prefer just sketching out with a burnt sienna or something else to lay out composition.
You saw in the video how I do it, and have done it hundreds of times. Perhaps you were too heavy handed or were shading with the charcoal. If you use a light touch it really should not be a problem. Let me know if I can be of further help.
Also, if you have not prepared the canvas properly to start, that may add to your difficulties. check out my video on canvas prep > kzread.info/dash/bejne/n4SEm9iRn9eagto.html
@@codydelong1 yeah I was too heavy handed shading . I do use liquin when I block in so I got that part right. Thanks for the tips!
@@59jaguar my pleasure. I will be conducting another online (zoom) painting class soon. If that interests you, consider signing up for my newsletter - www.codydelong.com/vipinsider
Amazing how you’ve made the painting so much better than the photo. It just jumps out at you. My wife and I visited your studio in Jerome in 2014 and purchased a couple of your metal artworks of the Grand Canyon which still hang in our hallway to this very day. We’ve been fans ever since and it’s a pleasure to now see you on You Tube.
Thank you so much! Redesigning what nature presents into something I see, that is perhaps more dynamic is part of what keeps my love alive for painting. Of course, sometimes nature is so incredible that I cannot improve on it, but I'm always trying.
Very cool. Nice job painting that . What sort of an easel is that ? Thanks
It's a Hughes easel, and I really wish I still had it!
Strong, gorgeous composition and colour use. May do a take-off on this.
Love to see it when you're done
Very informative!

Never thought of toning with Liquin, interesting idea!
