    Great video, and thanks for the mention! I wouldn't consider myself further "down the track" than you, given that my next video will be about how I'm changing up my layout, but @mlwqc and @dmcry600 are much more advanced than me. I also love your layout's finished and neat look, something I want to explore with my own sometime in the future. A cold and somewhat dark unfinished basement doesn't help much, but that can be worked around. Thanks for sharing!

    Great video! I am in the early stages of planning a model railroad that will have to fit in a little bit less space than that. My question is, how often do you use the runaround track? I am thinking I can omit it to save space and just have the cars always on one side of the locomotive.

  • @SouthDown
    @SouthDown9 сағат бұрын

    A run-around was a must-have for me as I had the space for it. But if you are tight in space, just two switches can still give you a lot to do. Here is a good example from @moghobbystuff featuring two switches, lots of ops, in very limited space: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hn99pNCCoZPJp6Q.htmlsi=DL86f3UEP6YPRE7Z

    That locomotive sounds great! What kind of speaker did you put in it?

  • @SouthDown

    The original solid plastic grill was replaced with a metal one from a $15 set of detail parts I bought online. The speaker is 17mm wide and a bit longer than the grill and sealed in so that the entire body acts like a baffle. Having said that, this is a TCS WowSound decoder and while low on features I want the sound quality lives up to its name.

    Thank-you for making this video, and I need to dig my Life-Like Proto 2000s out of their boxes, give them a good cleaning / re-lube, and replace the cracked gears on half of the GPs. Interesting to see my old friend, Craig Bisgeier (whos' passed away) mentioned. We had many email conversations over the years on layout design. I would recommend any of your followers looking into layout design to check into both the LDSIG and OPSiG groups of the NMRA (you don't need to be a member of NMRA to join these groups) I would check out the back issues of their publications for articles of interest. (might even find mine) There are a lot of opinions and options out there; many NOT on the web, that are still very valid. One of my own favs. for small layouts is the LDE Layout Design Element. It focuses on one larger (read fun, complex, modelable) industry. A good example being a papermill and if room, it's support yard. Another might be a brewer. This idea coined by Tony Thompson is a great way to start small, but with good design could be part of a larger layout later, or even a FREMO or other modular group. All things worth looking into. Cheers, enjoy your layout and modeling.

    I had an N-scale switching layout which gave me a lot of pleasure, with one or two glaring problems... the trackwork was terrible, and I had rapido couplers. Oh, and it was DCC. Watching the movements on your layout make me realise how much more heft HO has, and now I am dissatisfied. Bah. Your trains - and the way you run them - look so much more realistic, and that all makes me think I should get back into the hobby in HO instead. Thankyou for the video, but, rats, now I have to start all over again!

  • @SouthDown
    @SouthDownАй бұрын

    Please don't get discouraged! The fastest way to get to what you want is to learn from the experience of being dissatisfied, even if starting all over again isn't great--I know, this is my second layout after I scrapped the mess that was my first. The aspect of modelling I love the most is the realistic slow speeds, slow starts, and slow stops of consisted models, so the "heft" you see is all programmed in. You can make these models jack rabbit down the tracks as well. Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. I didn't expect this video to generate any comments because it is strictly switching at a calm and relaxing pace and the kind of thing I really enjoy watching, but for sure I thought I was alone on this. Appreciate your feedback!

    Too many camera cuts in this one. The tempo of the editing should match the tempo of the subject. Here, your subject is trains moving slowly, but you have eleven cuts in the first minute alone. Especially with the sound levels changing at every cut, I just find this unwatchable. I wanted a nice relaxing time watching your beautiful slow-moving trains, but everything's just jumping about hyperactively.

  • @SouthDown
    @SouthDownАй бұрын

    Thanks for the feedback! Just needs to be more constructive as you clearly seem to know a thing or two about video editing but are only providing the criticism part of it. Perhaps the video coming out July 1st may be more to your liking: it’s a single cut from a single angle with 18 minutes of slow shunting with nothing more than engine sounds.

  • @beeble2003
    @beeble2003Ай бұрын

    @@SouthDown The constructive part is the tempo of the cuts matching the tempo of the subject. Here, things are moving slowly and nothing much is happening, so you don't need a lot of cuts. Just cut when there's something new to show. For example, once the train's passed one point, you might cut to it viewed from another point. Or when it starts going off in a different direction.

  • @SouthDown
