Electric Vehicle Life

I've been reluctant to get an electric car since they first came to the UK market but this year I have ditched the diesel and gone full electric. My channel will show how I get on with an EV and whether it was the right decision or if I should have stayed with an internal combustion engine.

    Mine too is poor aircon, (had it from new, 2021 model) , been back to mg but they state it’s as per mgs stats, I’ve just tested two teslas and they weren’t great either. It’s almost useless in eco mode too. (My mg Zs). Disappointed with the aircon and it uses a lot of power too, shortening its already limited range. Battery now down to 172 miles after 3 years, and around 160 in winter, both in eco mode. It’s a cheapish Chinese EV so it is what it is. Now allegedly worth around £11000. Depreciation is massive on all evs , mine was just over £28000 in 2021. 😭🙈

    Did you try A E Wilcox of Wickwar? Surprised the Salisbury dealer did not double check the steering rack. Dealers surely must know of the common faults! I have a 2 yr old ZS Trophy connect and do worry about getting it serviced.

    Shocking treatment, I'm on my 2nd ZS ev and the only work required under warranty was a attempt to cure numerous rattles and creaks in my present car a 2023 trophy LR which was unsuccessful. My daughter has a 4 year old Renault Zoe and she had the steering column replaced under warranty recently and all completed free. I am like you and this will be my last MG as the quality seems poor and the warranty has so many clauses hardly anything is covered for 7 years and many only one year, I'll probably go Korean soon as the warranty is so comprehensive and build quality is better.

    As it happens, I have used Cleevely EV twice now for routine servicing at home for the two MG ZE EVs I've had. It's a great outfit. The mechanics are very friendly and knowledgeable, and the price is fine both for the convenience and expertise they provide. From my experience I'd recommend them all the time.

    I was very sorry to hear about this experience. My own experience with dealerships has been both good and bad, but more to the point, the replacement of the universal joint (or even the steering column) should be a warranty repair given how widespread the problem was and in some peoples minds, should have led to a recall of the MK1 model. I've been very fortunate (cross-fingers, touch-wood, stand on my head and count to 100) that I haven't experienced the kinds of issues other MG ZS EV drivers have had. I have rationalised their problems with the thought that problems do occur with all cars - including brand new ones. However when they do occur it is of vital importance that a good dealer network exists, with well-trained technicians, and a service underpinned by a good warranty and spare part availability. It sounds like you've been let down on every front, and paid good money in spite of being let down. If I was in charge of MG I would get your car in immediately and fix it for free and get you a refund for the misdiagnosed repair - and if it can't be fixed immediately to give you a courtesy car until it can. In these competitive, cost-conscious days, maintaining good will is of vital important. Once it's gone it's very hard to get back. On the MG forum there is a person called Miles, who belongs to the Chorley Group - as a dealership they are far too far away for you, but being the very approachable person he appears to be, he might get to the right person in MG to do the right thing. For me, it's also a bit personal, since it was seeing your videos that encouraged me not to have range fear with proper planning and contributed also to getting the MG ZS EV. Best of luck!

A little feedback on the video: it would have been nice if you could have included some close up shots of the replacement process as I've never done many blade replacements and I can't see what you are doing during the front blade replacement. Thanks.

    Wiper blades are still working well and we've had plenty of rain so they have had a lot of use. Appreciate the feedback as well. I found it hard to regulate the heating on my MG. Then I found that if one pushes the temperature knob in and turn to the right at the same time, the heating then comes on, more so when one uses the screen demisters and a little bit more air blowing! This is a great system for one leaving early on a frosty morning, as it clears the screens in no time, also one inserts oneself into a warm/hot car before setting off on ones journey!

    There is no app with the MK1 version of the ZS so no direct experience but from what I have heard from MK2 owners is that there is a QR code in the car (I think the drivers B pillar) which you can scan. Also, did you buy the car second hand? If so, then the previous owner may still have their phone bound to the car which will prevent you from binding your phone.

    @@electricvehiclelife thanks for the reply. Appreciate this is off-topic from SatNav but just for info, there's no QR code on the pillar (at least on my car), and though there are QR codes under the bonnet they appear to be identifiers for individual components, rather than something that iSmart recognises. Many thanks all the same.

    Interesting breakdown, and I believe every EV own who tried to perpetuate the 'saving' myth should by law be forced to begin with "it depends" We have 2 x diesels, each fully paid off in in good health. 55mpg avg. Our combined annual mileage is around 6000. We spend about £1,000pa on fuel (combined) Road tax is £20 & £30. The main family car (Nissan Qashqai) is Ulez/ congestion exempt. Our situation isnt normal granted, when I was still paying off the loan for the Nissan, it was £260pm (car 2nd hand was 13k less trade-in) Should it die tomorrow, financial I cant get anywhere near that with an EV of equivalent spec and size which js a shame. Even a Phev or Hybrid (which should have been the world wide stepping stones before BEV's where introduced imho) don't make that much more sense, despite the 2035 push back. As ever, the scenarios in which an ICE drive may see somekind of payback is with high annual mileage and the ICE car had stupidly low mpg. I Looked on compare the market for insurance for a 2nd hand M3 Tesla. It was 22k with 25k on the clock. Std range I think. £1,090 to insure?! My Nissan is £236 presently. The difference is nearly what we spend a year combined in fuel lol. Crazy

  • @electricvehiclelife
    @electricvehiclelife9 ай бұрын

    If you can get the long range version then you are looking at 250 miles so would only need to charge once on a journey like this. As batteries improve, range gets better and charging speeds get faster then things will get better but for now long journeys can be a bit hit and miss.

  • @stuartburns8657
    @stuartburns86579 ай бұрын

    @@electricvehiclelife Yes, that was my thinking. Granted our combined annual mileage is around 6000 for both ICE vehicles, and it's only the occasional UK break and visiting up North (150 odd miles) a couple of times per year. Watching the EV space with extreme interest. Sales in the UK (excluding Fleet for tax reasons at the moment) are stalling for private ownership. Remains to be seen if the typical early adopter 'S' curve pattern will fizzle out due to the deadline extension and lack of incentives. With 2025 VED at unknown pricing (I pay £20 & £30 for our 2 diesels) + insane insurance costs (2nd hand M3 for 22k would cost me £1092 vs my current £260!!??) It's sadly just not adding up

    Hi. I'd like to share my somewhat unique experience. Feel free to skip this as I will ramble a bit I am a citizen of Sderot, an Israeli city next to the Gaza strip. Last week I was stuck in my house because armed terrorists roamed my city, killing anyone they found. Luckily I heard the gunshots and they never got to my street. This situation has been going on since October 7th (saturday) until October 11, when our security forces gave the all clear. During this time, a mortar hit a power line, resulting in a power outage that lasted 2 days because the repair crews couldn't work while at risk of being shot, or bombed. Luckily, the car was fully charged the night before. The immediate disadvantage here is lack of V2L. I managed, but having that feature would be nice. I also wasn't able to use my car to charge my phones because it has an unfortunate property of DRL, which is an obvious giveaway for any aspiring islamist walking by. When I was able to leave to a safe place, I loaded the family and we drove ~200km north. The first ~20km I drove like mad, the rest I lowered the speed to 90kph and we managed to get to our safe (relatively) destination with some 10% charge left. Another thing. Several charging companies have opened their chargers for free country wide, yet gas still costs 2$ a liter.

    10:40 thank you for the full transparency with the travel and charging times. Good effort! The cost is definitely an eye opener. Although with 75pence/kWh, I'm not surprised it was reaching 21pence per mile. I think it's also worth highlighting again that the 4 stops on the journey totalled 212 minutes. In other words, 3 hours 32 minutes. If I was doing the same journey in an ICE, I may indeed stop 2 times, to have a leg stretch and toilet break, but I'd be looking at a max stopping time of 1 hour. So that journey in an ICE would have taken 8 hours vs your 10hours 33minutes. It may even be as quick as 7hours 30 minutes as the ICE would be going at a 70mph on the GPS. That'd be a signifcant 3 hour earlier arrival time in Edinburgh. I think the question I'd ask you: If you had arrived in Edinburgh 3 hours earlier, would it have changed anything, such as mood of the passengers or maybe dining out a little earlier? Do you have the 40kWh ZSEV?

  • @electricvehiclelife

    I talk a bit more about the charging times in part 2 so won't spoil it too much. Check-in at the hotel was 15:30 so I think if we had been in an ICE we probably would have left home a little later with the aim of arriving at a similar time as we were aiming for in the EV. I do have the MK1 ZS which has the 44.5kWh battery (circa 40kWh usable).
