The way I play depends heavily on what deck I'm using. My best deck, Galea Kindler of Hope, generally finishes off the strongest player with commander damage then tries to shift into a combo for the rest of the table. My Ghalta primal hunger deck is a crazy fast aggro deck that gets a large board of steadily larger creatures and generally focuses the table on dealing with a never ending barrage of value. My ghalta deck runs a lot of removal lol

Don't go in blind to a LGS on Friday night magic as a new person or coming back. Save your money and get a precon. Do maybe 10 bucks in upgrades if you want. Or use edhrec and build a deck if your good and stick to deck composition. Tolarian academy helps with general deck composition. Its a guide. Not rules. Its real easy to leave big weak gaps if you build a deck by scratch. So, really heed his advise. 10 ramp, 10 draw, 10 removal etc etc. Stuff like that. Edhrec does great for awesome and affordable synergy cards but you want to stick to your guns and make sure you cover all your bases with stuff above and other critical parts. Not end up having a deck with 0 removal or draw cards. I built a solid jhoira of the ghitu commander deck for 25 bucks. So you can save a lot and still have a solid deck that competes with many precon decks. Lastly I found lgs has been taken over by wanna be cedh decks. 900 dollar decks. Find the few people playing precon decks or 150 ish decks and less. You won't have fun. You will lose. Nearly everytime. Don't even try. Many "casual" deck players have 300 plus dollar cards in their 100 card deck. I've had far more fun recently doing these budget decks and playing in the general realm price bracket. I messed up building decks at first using edhrec 😆 I built an all legendary creature gruul deck. It stunk. Its ok to mess up. Once or twice 😆. It was only 20 bucks or so but still. Command quarters has nice deck builds too. Look for the decks around 20 to 25 bucks. Especially if your LGS sells cards for minimum 25 cents. Many do. You will get more value than building one of his 1 dollar decks for like 18 bucks because you had to pay 25 cents each for those one penny cards. I probably would say flat out dont go to the LGS if it wasn't for the few nice people who play real budget decks. Trust me, there are tons of toxic people there that don't care if you have fun and are sore losers. Make a permanent group with the nice budget people. Its totally not worth going around playing random people every week. I've seen far too many pubstompers, salty people in the 3 or 4 months since going. Take care. Hope this helps out a new person to magic.

Thanks for the tips @brando5705 I can definitely agree that playing with a group that are all on a similar level is a lot of fun and great way to get into the game. our playgroup hasent played at a LGS yet but me and my sister did get to play some games with new people at MagicCon and everyone we played with were actually really nice. we informed them that we were newer players and were playing with slightly upgraded precons and they were happy to use decks that would be a good fit for the pod. Overall was a good expereince getting to play against new players and new decks that we hadent seen before

Honestly mh3 doesnt come as a shock to me. Price or focus on commander. Mh2 was exactly the same. Its a premium set much like any masters set. Id say stick to sealed or deafts for sets like these and buy singles.

  • @JackTalksMTG

Even worst than gatekeeping the format to new players, these sets are often a net negative for existing modern players Forces you to drop cash to update your deck and remain competitive as you need the new cards Older cards prices drop because now obsolete/power creeped Got into modern 16 years ago because I wanted a format that will preserve my collection’s value, and to have a deck or two that will never rotate out Now I have to manage my modern collection like a standard player, every 2 years

With a few EDH opens and THE LEAGUE (that doesn't sell them pack anyway since you can print and play almost any modern card you like), the scene is pretty dead. @@JackTalksMTG As commander gets more and more expensive, and Modern seems entirely priced out, it's a great entry point. In my case, I'm convincing my commander friends to play it, because getting four of us to dedicate 1-2 hours at a time is getting increasingly difficult. If you have a regular table, I'd do the same! The only thing I miss with it, is the lesser emphasis on building your own decks, seemingly!
