Khon Kaen Den

Khon Kaen Den

Always live the life you love... for me, that's being in Khon Kaen, NE Thailand (Isan or Isaan) where I have lived for almost 20 years with my amazing wife, Beau, and my two cats, Smokey and Harry.

Welcome to my channel @KhonKaenDen. I upload videos every two days (one day to record, one to edit), keeping you in touch with just about everything regarding my life in Khon Kaen and Isan. I cover everything from budgets to speaking Thai and eating (and even making) local dishes to spending quality time with the missus. I am based in Khon Kaen but will be travelling further afield and showing you more of Isan over the coming months.

Don't forget, if you like my videos, hit the thumbs up, subscribe and comment... and come along on my Isan adventures.

    Thank you for the very informative video. I am coming back to Thailand in November 2024 to visit my friend hopefully for about 6 weeks, i can stay at her house and will help with her rice harvest. Hope to eventually retire out there so your video was full of useful info!

    First visit, 2002. Dave and Noi moved east of Khon Kaen to run a farm steading mainly goats and growing mushrooms. Met Noi a couple of times around 2014 2016. Im still in the province but never go to Khon Kaen. Not the same as before, pretty desolate and no spark. Last visit was 2017. Your haunts were taking me step by step on my walk around the bars. Very similar. Svens corner was sold on and the last I knew was what it looks like now, a Thai restaurant and think you can still sit at the bar on the outside. No1 Bar was my first bar as I stepped off the bus. Dave is indeed Scottish and lived as a postman in NZ. It was a joy to chat and drink with a fellow Scotsman. I stayed in the city 2013-2016 next door to the new Tawandaeng. It was a busy night life scene with many bars, live music and eateries on the roadside opposite. Loved it but burnt out. Took up the outdoor lifestyle and live at my house in the sticks content with the been their done it attitude no need to further explore. Hope you enjoyed your visit, you certainly have a good memory. The Silver Bullet was mainly for lady pleasures and obviously the police had a lucrative hand in it. Thanks for the walk around.

    Thailand is not a Tipping country for some rude tourists but local people, they give a tip I’m a local Thai people And Tip or not Tip is just show that your parents educate you to have manners or not From my social background My friends and my family Tipping 5-20THB for restaurants 50-100THB if order a lot Tipping 20-50THB for taxi Tipping 20-50THB for housekeeping Tipping 100THB for massage therapist,Tour guide Donate at least 20-100THB when you visit temple And who don’t give Tips It’s show that you have narrow heart Because 90-95% of service in Thailand they got less wage, more service many people they’re exhausted very much but they still got same wage In Thai culture they don’t say Tip They just give more and say ‘Mai Tong Thon Pee Hai ไม่ต้องทอนพี่ให้’ it’s mean i don’t wanna accept change i wanna give you) and they don’t say ‘Tip’ please don’t told that loudly, sometimes the business owner will got all Tips instead of people who service you And if someone don’t accept your Tip Just buy something/food give them It’s a manner from my society

    it occurs to me you might be able to make the mic more directional by wrapping a funnel of paper around it, or a cut in half water bottle? or for a real directional, a short bit of PVC as it's thick and dense. MIGHT cut out much of the ambient noise but you might have to get it "in your face :)

    I lived in Khon Kaen for a few months in 1968-9. I keep looking for familiar things (besides the Kosa) in videos and see not a one. Population was around 35,000. The only nightclubs I remember were the Kosa (restaurant by day…club at night), and the Silver Star. (There was also a little grubby GI bar, the Jun Pen, which the owner gave up and converted to a ramwong hall before I was gone-soldiers were too rowdy for him) There was a lovely outdoor restaurant on the Beung Kaen Nakhorn where my friends liked to go after work for beer, followed by dinner. ..looks like the whole area around the Beung has become a running path with food carts.

    Yes, you would have been FAR better off in a country in South America, where you can own land and get permanent residency within the first two years. That way, you could have created both a stable life and a stable future. You are not allowed to, in xeno Thailand. (I made the same mistake at 30 but will NEVER spend a penny in Thailand ever again.) Incidentally, I was fluent in spoken Thai by the third year and then started daily with the kids' books that you mentioned and learned the writing fairly quickly. This got me some paid translation work.

    Great videos Den. I'm a new subscriber after enjoying a few of your videos. I am in much the same position you were in - Thai wife, soon to go and live permanently in Thailand, will teach English part time and need to learn Thai. I accept it as a long slow process, and am learning to read Thai. Everyone has a different idea on how best to approach the challenge of learning a new language, and provide conflicting tip, but I think everyone who is motivated finds their best way. I like your emphasis on tones, and have experienced that lack of understanding from mispronunciation. Look forward to viewing more of your videos.

    We are worried also because you are suddenly no longer here. We understand more than 100 percent that the previous pace was unsustainable. Kohn Kaen as a city and the people living in it, just like everywhere and with everyone, makes it almost impossible to produce something new every day. But now suddenly nothing at all. That you told about a psychological relapse and that a number of viewers immediately used it to tell their own story, that is a shame, but the nature of the human animal. I hope that you are OK and that you may be doing something different, professionally or in your spare time, that will give you plenty of satisfaction, mayby with less stress and pressure (?) on yourself. We will miss you and your engaging, confident appearance and sympathy for your viewers. Thanks for all your wise insights, tips and video's about Kohn Kaen and Thailand. But please also keep in mind it is and remains Thailand.... We hope to meet you this year (accidently?) in Kohn Kaen. Do not forget the sabai, sabai and Sanook. Happy New Year and take care❤❤❤

    @@foszen I don't exactly understand what you are saying here, are you suggesting those of us who wrote longer comments (I always did) to what he discussed in his videos, also the personal ones, have something to do with Dennis being missing or offline now? In that case I feel terrible. I might never write a comment again. However, as far as I know Dennis, I think he appreciated my (and anyone's') comments. Even the personal and deeper ones. I hope he is only taking a break, or maybe found out that these youtube videos just weren't enough to make a living, and maybe he went back to working as a teacher. I hope there is an explanation, because I'm really worried too. Any sign of life would be most appreciated.

  • @foszen
    @foszen7 ай бұрын

    Dear Ms. Salina, I don't understand why you take my mail personally. I mainly looked at Mr. Dennis's work and rarely or almost never read the comments. Except during the period when he stopped for a while and read how some people react when someone wants to tell them about their health.With something that usually does not help them: starting to talk about themselves as a form of well-meaning comfort. I don't even know if you did that and I never noticed you in the comments. Our joint concern now is that everything is well with Dennis In the hope that he has found a reason and a good alternative for himself. Or maybe he's just on vacation. I wish the very best for him

  • @sarlina1
    @sarlina17 ай бұрын

    @@foszen Thanks for clarifying, Rudy. I am sorry if I misunderstood. I once told Dennis that his channel is one of my favourite youtube channels, and I believed we both enjoyed commenting back and forth. Always with a smile. Now I'm not so sure anymore. He always has some long answers, and I appreciated that. What I am concerned about is that all these comments (from and to everyone), might have tired him out, and that he always felt obligated to answer them with so many words. I told him he maybe shouldn't always answer every one of them, for his own sake, that might after a while come out more as a job, than fun for him. If you understand what I mean. And now none of us have heard from him since. I have missed his videos and his lovely wife. Yes, I also think it might have been a mistake to turn the channel into daily videos, both for his sake, and for ours. Let us hope all this has a perfectly reasonable explanation. Thank you for showing concerns for him. We all hope to hear from both of them soon again. Sarlina.

    Why not take your own advice and learn to read and write now? Unless there are special reasons you have not shared yet, the odds seem stacked in your favor if you decided to - you live in thailand surrounded by thai writing, you already speak it well, you have a thai wife, you seem to have spare time, etc...
