Tennis racquet stringing, tips, Wilson Baiardo, Gamma Progression II ELS, Tourna 700-es, reviews, advice, step by step instructions, and how to.
I have been stringing for a number of years and have strung on drop weight, crank, and several levels of electronic machines. I string for our local University, 3 clubs, everything NCAA, ITA, and ITF men's and women's pro circuit events.
I have always felt that the stringing community needs to act more like a community and share knowledge and resources.

I came across the quite by accident and I've watched it three times now and it's inspired me to learn how to string rackets. Itired it once back 1989 or so using my mates drop-weight machine, I did an ok-ish job but I never tried to another one. In your opinion what the the best stringer one can buy for sub 1000?
@capricornmagic63 to be honest, I am not sure. I am not up to date on current machine prices. I am not sure if you can even get an electric machine for that. If your budget is limited, just go for.as many features as you can get. Start with 6 point mounting, then fixed clamps, then upgrade the tensioner.
Hi. When you meassure on short side the last mains length 1 1/2 (from 7 to 8 1/2) is that to reach the stringer? how much length to string long side incl. the 8 + 1 mains ?
@benjaminjensen111 Yes. Don't know. The long side is going to have almost 30 feet of string.
Hi Herb. Why dont you use a starting block for protecting the outside frame and 2 cm of the string for the tie off?
@@benjaminjensen111 I do not leave the clamp on long enough to damage the string, and the clamp is against the head guard. It's not going to damage the frame or scratch the paint.
Hi Herb, do you think it's worth upgrading the old Baiardo clamps to the new ones from the Baiardo L?
@danielr.9516 can't really answer that for you. I think if I was going to pay the money to replace the clamps and rails, I would just sell the L and buy a full model. You probably have $4000 in the L going to cost $700-$800 for base amps and rails. For another $1200, you can have the full model.
@@HerbBaird At the moment, I own the old classic Baiardo with the 4-teeth clamps. I'm just thinking of upgrading to the 5-teeth clamps. Cost are around 400 Dollar. I'm not sure if they are worth the money compared to the old ones. 🙂
@danielr.9516 Everyone always asks about the base clamps, sorry. I have both old and new. I put the old clamps on the new machine. If your old clamps are still in good shape, I would stay with them. The new clamps are almost too light to release the base, and to me just feel flimsy. Might be worth buying a pair to put up while you can, but I will use the old ones until they fall apart.
@@HerbBaird Thanks for your quick response, Herb 🙂
Judt got a second one of this...and it sounds dofferent, and is much slower than my first. Anyone have suggestions?
Another great video. Do you use any products to get sticky stuff off racquets? Thanks
@jeffcoffey8970 I just use alcohol. If itnis really bad use goo gone and the clean it off with alcohol
Awesome. Thanks again Herb.
Thank you for this! I’ve strung only 3 racquets now. And my mains had the correct tension, but my crosses came out about 10-15 lbs less than intended. This was my exact problem. Appreciate this video!
This seemed to work for my Junior Pure Strike 25", which I couldn't not find any patterns for. Thank you!
@@soundoflasers they are the same racquet just a shorter handle
This is such a nicer stringer than my eagnas lmao
Speedy gonzales
How long is the string?
Not sure. I do not measure string with a ruler. I pull string by arm length
Think ir the only video so thanks.
Does it comes with badminton frame support (4pts mount support)?
It comes with adapters for badminton
@@HerbBaird thanks
Can I use it for stringing badminton racket?
Yes
@@HerbBaird thanks
No co
Just bought it
Thx a lot
My Baialdo lite too. Clamp locking is different from my machine. Did you exchange it?
Neither one of these is a Baiardo Lite. One is a 2015 model, and one is the updated 2022 model.
Thanks for the video. I was looking for one-piece instructions. It's very easy to do after seeing your demonstration. The trickiest part is measuring b/c it seems like the short side is really short :) Nearly half of the short side was just so I could tension it around the gripper !
Great demo of the 1 piece stringing.
my Starting Clamp breaks the string. Is there any way to install it so it doesn't damage the string.
Not sure why the clamp would be breaking the string. Make sure not to place the string any deeper into the jaws than the eyelets on the clamp and make to take the clamp off as soon as possible. Where is your string breaking at?
@@HerbBaird The string breaks because the clamp leaves a mark. I do put the string deep into the clamp. Should I put the string around the drop of the clamp or before the notch? Thank you, I will test it.
I think it will be useful to make a video how we use the starting clamp
can you recommend string that never breaks
Kevlar
@@HerbBaird thanks for the reply.. is prince problend a good choice or there's something better ??
It is a blend of kevlar and synthetic gut. I have one customer that uses it. You can go full bed of Kevlar to last longer
@@HerbBaird many thanks
Is this Iga's racket ????
I do not know what she plays with
Yes but, with 300... This is 305 iso
Hello Herb. I’m very interested in getting a Baiardo. I found that Wilson sells the L but I’m interested in the regular one. Any idea where I could find one? Have searched all over the net but to no avail. Thanks for such a great channel. Have learned a whole lot. Repetition is key.
Not at the moment. Seems they are out of stock everywhere
@@HerbBaird Thought so. Thanks for the reply.
But Yonex forces the 4 knots on his frames, or you void the warranty.
Correct, but look at the racquet in the video and let me know if you think it is still under warranty. Also, if the customer wants a one piece, I am giving them a one piece.
Hey Herb what happens if I never clean my machine? I am too lazy, will the racquets still play ok?
Your clamps and puller head will develop a build-up of string residue. This will cause the string to slip, and you will start to over tighten the clamps to compensate. This will start to damage the string. You will also find that the rails and base clamps will develop a residue, .making them difficult to move
Thank you for the reply! Bought some 91% alcohol going to clean all the things you explained. What spots do you oil specifically? And what kind of oil do you use. Thanks!!
@@swagfordaysbigkiller a lightweight bicycle chain oil works wells. I use Tru Flow brand. I put a light coat on the rails, and on the bottom of the clamp bases. I oil the clamp post, and a drop everywhere the rollers touch on the clamps.
Great video as always Herb!
Love yours videos 👌 Small question: how tide I need to secure racquet before start stringing? Thank you

@@HerbBaird awesome 👍thank you (looks like I’m always use to much 💪)
Great tips, very informative! Thanks for the video.
Nice overview. Thanks for posting.
May i know hiw much does thr machine cost ?
I can not answer your question. When I bought mine, it was around $850 US. The last time I looked, they were around $1700 US. I'm not sure what they are now or how much they are in your area.
If you could answer a question for me. When I string multifilaments I am always above my set tension on my machine (gamma progression els ii). When I check on the apple app for racquet tension if I set it to 45 pounds for example it will come out 49 when I am finished. This doesn't happen when I string polys, it only happens when I string multis. I have done 3 different strings types on 4 different racquets to check my sanity multiple times and it keeps happening. Any thoughts on why? The polys on the app are a lot closer to what i set, usualy a couple pounds below, but being below my set tension makes a lot more sense to me than being above my set tension.
My advice is to quit using apps to check your tension. When you set to 45 and you are either over or under on the app, do you cut the string out and start over? Probably not. Calibrate the machine, string your racquets, and play. If they feel right, no problem. If not, adjust the next stringing.
Thanks for the video. The recommendation appears to be to skip 7 and 9 for all of the Aero models, but you skip 8 here - is there a reason? (Is it to do with the ATW pattern?). (Edit - Actually the Aero Rafa I'm looking at has definitely a closer gap between 6 and 7 than in this video, they must be different models).
Yes, they are different
very good
Excellent video and very useful for me since I started stringing my racquets and my boys and I are using Elevate V3 and the V3 tour. Also, I am using a hybrid configuration.
I got the wilson blade 98s 18x16. Is the stringing proces the same?
I got the wilson blade 98s 18x16. Is the the stringing proces the same
The mains will be the same. Tie at 7T. Crosses are same other than there are only 16 and tie at either 12T
would you mind telling me where did you get the tennis racquet holder?
when I got mine, I believe I got them off Amazon. I have had mine for over 10 years. They are made by Gamma. I have not seen them for sale in the US for several years. You can still purchase them in Europe and have them shipped.
Hey Herb, how did you get the string to go through the grommet so easily at 4:34? I forced it much harder than you did to no avail. The hole is completely covered by the main.
Make sure you have a sharp tip cut unto your string. You can also use an awl to make a groove that the string will slip through. The grommet over time will also stretch slightly.
Thanks for doing this video.
I seriously wish I found this video a year ago when I first started on my drop weight, would’ve saved me so many headaches
is your knot tension 10 percent ?
I have mine set to 20%
ok thanks also the blue badminton retainers on the throat piece i strung a badminton racquet with only one trouble is 1 broke off where can i get these ? directly from Wilson ?
That would be my guess
where to buy badminton arm?
The machine should have come with them. I do not know where you can buy them. You may contact Wilson.
Any advice of measuring string off reels?
kzread.info/dash/bejne/o62l2KevY8rXf8o.htmlsi=X0g78DhJkSMAQayO
I have one of those stringers and until I purchased a Gamma ELS, it was my go to machine. Thank you for showing the correct arm down starting position. I would put a small wood support block under the arm to prevent it from slamming into the support screw if the arm was accidently dropped. I found that it was unneccessary to rotate the gripper to horizontal every time the string was inserted. Simply wrap the gripper once or twice to insure the jaw closes. For a home stringer, it's an excellent and accurate stringer although it is slower and fussier than a constant pull electronic machine.
It doesn't look like the new tension head will be used on the progression, at least not on the latest version as of April 2024. Just guessing from looking at images but It may be too large to fit on the more compact moulded body of the progression vs the flat rails on the X series.which would allow more flexibility in positioning?
I really appreciate all of this advice, especially poaching the visiting team for some restringing, I also wanted to ask if you’d charge differently on a lockout machine 6mount vs a dropweight with a two mount, I upgraded to a crank but wanted to know if it was necessary to upgrade to electric tensioner to be taken seriously as a stringer and charge $15
This is just my opinion, but yes you need an electric machine. If you are stringing for any university teams you need to let them know that you are using a lockout machine. They may want to make adjustments based on the type of machine you are using. You do not charge differently based on the machine you use. It is up to you to provide a professional job no matter what machine you use.
@@HerbBaird thank you for the insight, ofc I do take care of the frames I string now but I mean most people assume anything less than a electronic machine won’t be accurate, currently found a wise 2086 on the market but was wondering if it was worth the upgrade or if most recreational players actually didn’t care or mind what machines was used, but also from a financial standpoint, do these machines resale for much after if I do decide to sell?
I would say most rec players have no idea. Most do not know anything about machines. Once you start stringing for higher level players, the machine will be more important
@@HerbBaird what is considered higher level? Do you mean community college players or top UC colleges? I know my local CC has a crank machine for students to use for tournaments and most do use it, personally I have a gamma progression 2 crank but really hate the very fast tension lost created in comparison to even a dropweight machine,
@@joes6712 I would say once you hit D1 players or start stringing any tournaments.
Hey Herb I’ve been watching your videos for some time and just started stringing. I can never get all of the slack out while doing the knots and it makes the tension of the strings go down quite drastically. Do you have any times for this.
There are several videos out there that address knots. Make sure you are pulling the knot along the string to pull out the slack, and the up and back, like an arc, to tighten and keep the slack out.
thanks great video we just got this and was too lazy to look it up in the manual ......much appreciated
At 9:16 there is a mistake. You put the clamp on the main while you should have put it on the cross that you had just tensioned
I sure did. I've never noticed. That is what happens when I try and talk and string at the same time.
@@HerbBaird it happens, i can understand talking + working is not easy
