    I find it ironic that Melbourne's public transport network is privatised to private companies partly owned by foreign governments. Metro Trains Melbourne majority-owned by MTR Corporation which itself is majority-owned by Hong Kong Government. And Yarra Trams operated by Keolis Downer which is half-owned by Keolis of which is jointly owned by the SNCF, French national railway company owned by the French government, and an investment fund of the Canadian provncial government of Quebec.

    There were also small ones that had limited options- like north wollongong - where you could get only the tickets for selected south coast line and city. You had to buy a ticket at the other end of your trip if you went beyond central.

    The irony with the Overland is the same issues are now being faced with the IP in Perth. Because Our state government's METRONET wants to increase trains on the already overcrowded Midland/Airport and soon to be Ellenbrook line, they're kicking the IP out from East Perth Terminal... the station that they built SPECIFICALLY FOR THE INDIAN PACIFIC! and instead, they're making it terminate at Kewdale freight depot, and bussing passengers into town... To be fair, one would immediately say that the Midland line currently does not have the capacity on it's dual-track route before they went and opened the Airport line, and the only logical way to increase capacity is to build a third or fourth line adjacent to the current one to sustain the trains, which currently is not possible due to the embankments the route covers are surrounded by roads at either end...

    Actually I’ve got a question, how come with most M-T-M sets the numbers of the trailer cars seemingly go way higher than motor cars despite being outnumbered 2-1?

  • @Taitset
    @TaitsetКүн бұрын

    Each car type (and each train type) is within its own number range, so being a higher number doesn't mean there are more of them, it just means they started from a higher number. Possibly they made all the T cars in 4 digit ranges to make them more obviously separate.

    A well-timed upload, seeing as I was just in Melbourne. Regarding the driving trailer in the middle of the Tait EMU, I thought that was confusing, especially after seeing the preserved set on the Sunbury Line last weekend. My favourite Melbourne EMU is easily the Comeng. That's because I generally prefer older trains to new ones, and the Comeng's traction motor sound is great. I guess the one thing I don't like or understand about these units is the fact that you have to pull the doors open rather than pressing a button. In any case, by favourite Comeng coach is 352M, and my second favourite Melbourne EMU is the refurbished Harris.

    Very good video Martin! Don't apologise for being nerdy, some of us appreciate it. That 'count the cars' game is getting harder and harder to play as you have to really seek out a LX. I guess you can still do it station but it gets pretty easy with train types and consists being very consistant, at least for us Belgrave/Lilydale commuters. Its also interesting the car number leads the classification, 123M. This is an old VR practice for passnger and guards vans going back early 1900's, maybe even earlier. Goods wagons are class then number, ie GY 1234. Well researched and I think this type of video encourages the less nerdy to really take notice of what a great transport system they have. Now we just have to get them to watch it.

    An interesting fact about this line is that while the freeway was being built over the line at Macaulay, the line was closed between the light repair centre and Flemington Bridge, and a crossover was installed at Flemington bridge to cater for running a shuttle service between there and Upfield. This was initially provided by three-car Comeng trains which were, of course, captive to that section. However, because of the Comeng trains not being sufficiently reliable (given that they couldn't go to the light repair centre or anywhere else for maintenance for the duration), the railways replaced them with three-car Silver (aka Hitachi) sets. The only way to do this was to tow the Silver sets in and the Comeng sets out by diesel over the Upfield-Somerton section. This was, I believe, the last time any trains ran over that section.

    It seems like its a global trend to simplify and set-ify EMU trains for the sake of operating efficiency. Seoul's first ever subway trains were originally designed to have 6 cars per set, and would double to 12 cars in peak hours. However, this never happened as, like you mentioned, its practically a waste of time and resources trying to couple and decouple sets. Hence the trains were just lengthened to 10 cars, and future models of the metro never had any center gangway doors on the cabs.

    Speaking of fun train noises, when I was living in Yokohama I used to ride the Keikyu Line and the sound of the N1000 Series when they accelerate is really nice. They're nicknamed "Do-re-mi-fa Inverters." Worth checking out. I think they retired them a couple of years ago though.

    An interesting thing I read in Alex Wardrop's book comparing the two suburban systems is that Melbourne's Tait sets would be unable to operate in Sydney due to their lower powered motors and worse power-to-weight ratio (ignoring the difference in track gauge). Sydney originally adopted only two motors (instead of the usual four) in each powered car for reasons of economy, but these motors were so powerful the trains could climb the 1-in-30 grades found in the Sydney underground system with ease. Melbourne's Tait sets would not have been able to accelerate enough to get into full series motoring to cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

  • @Taitset
    @Taitset3 күн бұрын

    I haven't got around to reading that book yet (it's sitting on my shelf!), however the 1 in 30 Jordanville bank on the Glen Waverley line is around twice as long as the climb from Wynyard to the top of the bridge, and involves a stop half way up. So I'd be very surprised if a 7 car Tait couldn't handle the climb out of Wynyard.

  • @zoqaeski

    @@Taitset Sydney's 1927 stock have much more tractive effort despite only having two motors, and could accelerate much quicker than Melbourne's Tait sets. The two motor design though meant that there wasn't much performance to spare on a wet and windy day.
