A video where I talk about the Hurstbridge line for 40 minutes!

Melbourne's Hurstbridge line is a 38km suburban railway line, running from the city out to the scenic Diamond Valley in the north-east suburbs. The line is 1600mm Broad Gauge and electrified at 1500v DC. In the video I talk through the line's many interesting features from the city out to the terminus. All photographs and video are taken by Martin Bennet (that's me), I also do the writing, narration, and diagrams. The only content in this video not made by me are a couple of scans from the 1927 Victorian Railways 'Curves and Grades' book, one from the 1945 VR passenger network map, and the google maps screenshots.

At the end of the video I mention you can travel on this line by steam train during the Hurstbridge Wattle Festival, usually in August or September. You can check here for details of the next one: www.steamrail.com.au/

Hi everyone, just a few additional notes: -I'm getting a LOT of questions about whether or not this will be a series, where I make similar videos about other Melbourne lines. The short answer is that yes, that is the eventual plan. But it's going to be a very long term process. This video spent around 7 months in production, and I had the advantage of it being 'my' line, so a lot of the information is stuff I've just learnt from first hand observation. But by all means, let me know which line you'd be interested in seeing next! -At 32:22 I mentioned that there was one other place where 'electric trains run parallel to a public dirt road.' The other one I was thinking of was Kenilworth Ave in Beaconsfield, however someone in the comments has informed that it has in fact now been paved (I was just going off the google maps imagery where it's still dirt). HOWEVER - somebody else came to the rescue and pointed out that there is another road that fits that description: Oakwood Lane in Tecoma. So if you guessed either of those, please help yourself to 10 points. -At 07:27 I mentioned that the unelectrified siding at Victoria Park replaced the one that used to be at Reservoir. The siding I was thinking of was actually at Bell, not Reservoir. -I was wrong about Ivanhoe being the wealthiest suburb on the line, it's actually Eaglemont next door with a median of ~2.4m! -The dangerous pedestrian crossing I talk about from 21:28 was upgraded to an active crossing in December 2023. -The surviving telegraph pole at Montmorency I talk about at 28:04 survived for some time after the new station opened, but was eventually removed in mid-2023. -If anything else comes up, I'll be sure to add it to this comment! ~Thanks, Martin

I think a stony point line or Alamein line video would be interesting. Also you could probably save time with future videos by only talking about each station that has multiple lines going through it once. E.G. for a Mernda line video you would start at Rushall because you have already covered everything up to Clifton Hill.

I'd love to help out with fun history bits for stations, I actually went through every single station on the Melbourne network last year and tried to figure out where the names came from so I picked up a bunch of Cool Train (station) Facts from that. Gowrie, my usual station, was actually the hardest one to find the origin!

The only thing I know about the Hurstbridge line is when some drunk dude was basically passed out all train ride from CBD to Glen Waverley It's like the last train and as the final station announcement of Glen Waverley is heard this guy jumps up so quick and immediately yells What do you mean this train isn't going to Hurstbridge. I've never laughed so hard and so long Even to this day I think of how much joy that one dude brought me

I'm not into trains, but i'm casually really enjoying these videos! I remember my highschool woodwork teacher bolting out the door mid lesson to enthusiastically watch the Vline trains rumble past our school which backed onto the Sunbury line back in the mid 80's. We would follow him out and sneak in a quick smoke whilst he would teach us in fine detail about every different train. He was really happy to have a bunch of kids show even the slightest interest in his passion. Teachers and people who like to share and impart knowledge with care are very special. Can add you to that list. TY!

I used to live in right behind the railway line at Heidelberg and would have been the first house after the bridge on the right heading away from the city. It was a 3 level building and I was on the top so my back door was at about track level, so it was great for watching the trains go by. I moved away in 2014 so I had no idea that the line was finally duplicated there. I loved that house and Burgundy Street, though I absolutely loathed being so close to Bell Street, traffic in that area was horrendous. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Until I got my license this line was a huge part of my life .Thank you I have Subbed ❤❤💯

I started this video thinking "How could there possibly be this much to say about the Hurstbridge line?" and ended it going "Boy I wish i had another 40 minutes more about the Hurstbridge line". I've lived my entire life on this train line, really only a few stops I haven't had a significant location to visit nearby (Dennis, Westgarth, Victoria Park, and Collingwood are my least visited/never visited stops). I never would have thought there was so much of interest about my local area's trains. I'll be looking at it with new appreciation. It's a little sad to hear about the older lines and pieces of transportation that used to exist but no longer do. I live in hope for the suburban rail loop and the eventual Heidelberg-Doncaster-Box Hill train line that I would ride frequently if it existed. Also appreciated the dig at the new highway expansion. I go by it all the time and think of how the projections of traffic increases are set to give us maybe 3 years by the time it's finished until traffic is totally back to where it was.

I love this sort of dry humour that you sprinkle through your videos. Edit: the picture of the new Diamond Creek Platform 2 clearly shows a curved platform, but I wonder why that’s the case since modern standards dictate straight platforms?

The outer north stations are in the zoned green wedge. We have to learn to leave some of it in the ground, it’s how we stay alive. There is an enormous amount of natural heritage either side of the lines, from Eltham to HB and it must be the priority.

just to let you know, the Mont Park spur was also used in WWII by Hospital trains carrying wounded troops. My mother lived in Macleod before WWII and remembers both the troop trains and visitors going up by rail as well as the goods trains taking in supplies! I am also told that My grandmothers cousins were on the first train that stopped at Wattle Glen the day it opened they lived near Kangaroo Ground/ I also remember the single carriage Tait on the line and in 1978 on a Saturday while travelling to Diamond Creek it hit a cow and I had to help the driver take the cow off the line so we could proceed, the days before Radio and Mobile phones.

I lived in Heidelberg until 1980 when my family moved to Fitzroy. I took the train daily for all of my secondary schooling as the school was in Prahran so train from Heidelberg to Princes Bridge then walk from one side of Flinder St to the platforms on the river side for the Sandringham line. The goods siding at Heidelberg often had briquette loads and there used to be a fuel yard just next to the rail bridge on Burgundy St that was supplied that way. I used to travel by train a lot and remember plenty of fights at Princes Bridge between different footy supporter groups after games at the MCG. Our house in Heidelberg backed on to the cutting between Heidelberg and Rosanna stations as well.

Your videos are slowly restoring my interest in Australian railroads, little by little. Some context... I am an Australian, now living near Toronto Canada, having once lived for many years in Melbourne. A lifelong railfan, I spent my childhood hypnotized by the Vic Rail cement trains plying the branch line in Geelong. Yet, More and more I was frustrated with Australian trains for many reasons (silly gauges, no private sector companies, mostly passenger ops, skimpy rail routes compared to North America etc, etc.). Railroading in north America ticked all the boxes for me. But lately, I've been secretly watching AND ENJOYING tailset videos!! This thank you is long overdue. Having produced rail related videos I very much appreciate the time and effort you put in to all aspects of your content. I have learned so much about the rail system that I have ridden many times but only focused on the overall picture. I think the details in your vids have rekindled my interest. And I was surprised to feel excited to see another of your vids in my YT stream. Thanks again, I really appreciate your efforts and thanks for opening a window, at least a crack, that was previously pretty much shut!!😀 Cheers, Coxy

I’d have to drive past Rosanna, Heidelberg and Ivanhoe with their large but always full car parks to get all day parking at Darebin. Now I know why. My uncle and cousins lived in Greensborough, and have travelled this line every time i visited Melbourne.(i live in Qld) When first travelled this line was from spenser st station . Then in later times southern cross, best railway station in Australia. Greensborough station had a J class loco next to it, which i think has been restored. Great video.

I can remember the Montmorency wooden Station. It was very basic. I also recall the Watsonia ground level stations. It was wooden and if correct white painted. There was a Station Master that kept it maintained and cleaned. My remember is the Master was very proud.

Brilliant. Love it. I spent a significant part of my childhood in the Greensborough area, every weekend my father, my brother and I would all go for a ride to Hurstbridge so its very interesting to see the changes they've made since I last rode the line. I've also ridden the Diamond Creek Trail more times than I can count :)

I lived in Hurstbridge from 1981 TO 89. I was at RMIT for all of 1983 and took this train every day. Going from 6am to 7 pm I often fell asleep before it arrived in Hurstbridge. Good memories

This makes me want to spend a few days just catching trains to random places, lmao. I've had this as my main train line for so long, but I usually only commute to uni or go to the city, never really visiting places in between

An interesting note about the semaphore at 16:35, it is placed facing perpendicular to the line so as to be clearly not in use, as semaphores are still in the rule book and drivers must obey the few that still exist (in the country at least).
