    I actually don't think you would find as much of a consensus on siege from average players as you would think, its possible that you are biased because you primarily talk to top players lol. I do agree that siege is too strong overall though. Would be interesting to see how it would balance things out to have it changed.

    We are on the same team. Hopefully there will be a rework to siege warfare in the future. The only ones who find it enjoyable are a minority of the playerbase who have put up with the game all this time with this metagame in Mid/Late Game (and some follow players who like siege). Many others don't like it and others left the game for that reason. However, I do not agree with static spawns. This is Age of Empires and scouting (especially at the beginning) is an important part of the game. Within that randomness it is true that there are very unfair spawns and there the maps dev is the one who has to fix that situation. Measures could also be taken to reduce the randomness of the sheep by increasing their number on the map and having less food, for example.

    I think the best solution would be to significantly reduce the AOE effect of magnos (and probably great bombards too), also make them cheaper but with the same pop cap consumtion, however increase their damage against buildings. So basically make them a bit more versatile, shorter ranged cheaper trebuchet. Like you know ... they are siege units, not WW1 mortars Springalds could be completely removed this way, or they could be turned into basically longer ranged expensive crossbow units (like roman ballistarii were), although that would not be historically accurate. Bombards could remain somewhat similar, however their setup time (especially of great bombards) should be like 3x slower (and the rus immediate setup buff should make it quicker but not immediate), thus you would literally be able to flank a great bombard or zhu xi bombard without receiving damage as it can not follow your units, but in chokepoint it would be still great, which is fine. Nest of bees are fine stylistically, however (especially if springalds are removed or changed) their damage should be significantly nerfed, but they could apply a significant movement speed slow to enemy units, making them an interesting utility tool. Furthermore, they could maybe set buildings on fire, but have reduced damage against building otherwise (same goes for manjaniques). I think similar changes would turn siege into an interesting utility tool, but not something with which you actually intend to win a fight ...

    Wow, the amount of "I think most agree that" in first 3 minutes... Then claiming that mangos is the reason you can turtle in your base (not walls, keeps, garrison, etc). Then onto the historical accuracy crutch. :/ Clearly we want a good game more than historical accuracy, or we make mangudai have double the range of longbows. Couldn't watch more after that, sorry. Love your other content, so i hope you got it all out of your system and we can get more of that! :)

    Mangos makes it much easier to turtle in your base in the mid game. The enemy can have a huge army and as long as you have some units and get 1 or 2 mangos out (and place them between buildings and not out in the open), then the enemy has to retreat and get springalds. Otherwise you risk getting obliterated by some good mango shots.

    Siege needs to be extremely powerful but more rare. They should be the offensive equivalent of a castle rather than be spammed out like how it is currently.

    How are Byzantines not hard nerfed yet? 1. They start with a cistern that increases gather rate. 2. Their farms are cheaper and provide 2 resources. (Cheaper and better, makes no sense) 3. Mangonel towers are OP. 4. They can basically counter all civs because of the variety from mercenary house. 5. They can make a huge army and still go castle age because of mercenary house. 6. They have increased unit production because of the cistern. And can also speed up research or boost defense with a single click. 7. Their villagers can attack too with the cistern ability. This civ is COMPLETELY ruining the ladder, if they don't get a nerf in season 8 I think many people will call a quit to this game.

    Out of all siege units in game great bombards are the dumbest ever. They were only shot ONCE A DAY IRL, took literal days to move a few meters, and were widely inaccurate but they somehow shoot every few seconds, move really fast, and destroy everything in its way. I think there should be a population cap in game for siege. Max 2-4 for each with a cap of 6-8 total to make engagements centered around troops. Siege should also have the capability to garrison troops and be at full capacity to move and shoot. That way players are forced to engage with them or defend, not both. Siege towers should also allow infantry based troops to get over stone walls so players can damage eco and force opponents to fight opposed to safe springald turtling in late castle and imperial.

    siege is annoying - I don't mind it except for some glaring flaws it has. first, the best counter to siege is more siege (springalds), when horses should have better range to get at them, and also every civ should get culverin unless they have some seriously better springald upgrades (delhi needs culv bad). also ranged attacks in aoe4 are inconsistent. you've got arrows that autotarget, and ones that don't, which makes no sense, so mangos that can be dodged but cannons that can't is inconsistent. also, mangos (or siege in general) should have friendly fire. it'd make them less braindead to use. I don't think its that bad but there's room to improve by far. I guess my only diagreement as far as balancing without siege is that archers would need a big overhaul, because the only real answer to an archer ball is mangos, or a bigger archer deathball.

    I agree horsemen should be better vs siege. I just massively dislike the current design the fact that it forces you into a siege war. I feel like the springald/culverin serve only this purpose.

    @@Wam01 horsemen in general need a huge overhaul. they're expensive, their pathing is terrible, the speed difference between them and knights is negligible, outside the otto ones the range is bad, the damage is kind of low (low attack rate too), they still get melted by archer balls (especially english longbow, +2 range +1 damage is massive), they aren't quite good enough against feudal armor civs for the civs where they are the only counter option, and then on top of that, they're a mediocre at best counter for siege. like all you need is 3 spearmen by your mangos and they're stunned and then dead. honestly? I think #1 fix would be to make mangonel and other siege have friendly fire splash damage, to make them require more brain to use, and then you'd rely less on having to have springald to counter them. I was just saying about culverin because if we absolutely HAVE to have anti siege siege, it should be universal.

    I would like siege a lot more, if it had more counters and if it cost more resources and pop. Siege should get wrecked by all melee units SUPER fast. It should be high risk high reward to make siege. Edit: also the flaming arrows upgrade in imp should give ranged a massive buff against siege.

    I struggle against english, i cannot produce enough javelin thrower when going for long feudal game. What would you recommend ? I tried some keshik vs kings with some success but I can't seem to match council hall with javelin thrower, especially on smaller map like Cliffside where you can't really pickup longbow since you spawn so close to each other

    Yes English is a special case for sure. Against feudal aggression I would recommend hippodrome with lb/archer or jav/archer. Unfortuntely you kind of have to go hippodrome in this matchup if they are doing feudal aggression you need the buffed horsemen vs MAA/LB. Tough matchup regardless though goodluck.

    Id say with OOTD/Japan you can play heavy feudal and he can still fast castle while with JD I guess you would play feudal aswell probably with knights and he could either go knight or samurai/Onna in castle age if you need alternatives units.

    @@PoshMudcrab Yeah you would need to make making Archers as OOTD. You can probably get anyway with no making archers as JD since you have the hero but Japan could probably need to go inf in castle.

    Great content wam really been needing something like this as me and my bro mostly play 2v2s and are fairly new so this helps a tonne. One question I have though is how does a game play out if its a mirror of the defensive/greed comps? Thanks!

    Yeah thats so if its a mirror in a greedy/defensive comp you probably play similarly to what I said in the video with the defensive player playing a bit more greedy than normal with maybe an early 2nd TC or proscouts or something. The issue is, is that they cant full greed because you still want to slow down the opposing greedy player so they cant vacuum all the relics or so your teammate can. So yeah tough one but slightly more greed than usual id say from the defensive player but not full greed.

    Great video! You mention that the FC player always goes knights. But lets say the FC player is playing byz which doesnt have knights what composition would you go for then?

    Hahaha good point yes. You are right I didnt mention everything. With Byzantines you would continue to go Limetani/jav/lb or possibly variangian alongside a knight teammate.

    How would you rate OTD/mali/HRE in 2vs2 scenario's? Do u think the way infastructure civs fundamentally work- means stuff like cheaper towers for HRE are completely negated as- 'just go raid the other guy playing now! '

    Mali is a unique one that works sort of like 2tc civs. I forgot to mention them here but you would ideally play them with more aggressive/knight style civs. OTD/HRE function very similarly. And yes there infrastructure bonuses are less valuable than in 1v1s however they also have different bonuses such as Aachen (better farms) which is better in 2v2s. So overall I would probably rate Mali/OTD B tier and HRE A/S tier personally I find them one of the best civs to play atm.

    Thanks Wam!! This is a great video - covered all playstyles too! In the Japan/Eng game that you got overwhelmed by Rus/French, do you think it was just a wrong matchup? Because if Japan was going fast castle, English would not have the mobility to defend such a fast attack - or was there something you feel that could have worked had you known the plan from Loue and CsOH. I suppose Japan could have made a few units but then you lose anyway because they have knights and you don't.

    In hindsight I think I needed to focus solely on defending Japan. I got both wheelbarrow and the wood upgrade that game. I should have focused only on longbows (no spears) I think and gotta the blacksmith upgrades early to be able to trade well. If we can survive to get Japan castle the game should be favored for us. I think I just got a bit greedy and didnt see our win condition.

    Really good guide, Wam! A question: When would you go the puppypaw variant of the build vs yours? Is puppy's build more viable when the opponent is also rushing castle (Ayu/HRE/OotD) - that way you have units to deny relics/harrass while still being able to pick up relics yourself? Against non fast castle civs, would you say that the first build is better because you can constantly produce units (mercenaries until you age up?) How would you change the build if you didnt have three packs of safe berries like you did this game - what if you two of those berries were exposed? Do you just hold off the early aggression by first securing the area with towers/units? Thanks <3

    Yeah exactly against non-fast castle civs you can play extended feudal with safe access to berries for the entire time. So yeah the berries being exposed with this build wouldnt be ideal but I think the best solution would be to get secure towers as earlier as possible on both while still producing troops. If you have problems doing this vs a knight civ attacking them before you move out with vils can often work to draw their 1-2 knights away to defend.

    The reason the villager counts in caster mode dont seem to line up in the mongol-HRE game could be that the game stats sometimes counts gers as economy units. And they get counted again every time you move them, it's quite buggy... So if you leave caster mode and mouse-over your pop, it shouldn't have that bug and it might've shown a different worker count.

    Yeah only reason I did it this way is because these games were casted from the tournament so if you watched that already you had that point of view I wanted to get my POV when playing the games to give better insight into my thoughts.

    Yea that makes sense, I think in the Byz game against Lucifron for example it was really hard to tell his situation (as you mentioned a few times) from your POV, so even alternating back and forth could maybe work
