@@shawn.hickman Dock overhaul - it's atrocious in its current state. - Move the icons from the menu bar to dock, like it is on Windows - in fact, remove menu bar entirely, it's a waste of space. - Make the dock span the entire width of the screen. As it is, if you don't set it to autohide and maximize a window it has giant holes where you can see the wallpaper, it's ridiculous how it's still a thing. - The dock also has that very annoying behavior where it doesn't show immediately when you bring the cursor to the bottom of the screen, you have to either wait or drag further down. Should not be a thing. - Dock should show window previews when you hover over an app icon, as Windows does. Saves you a click and is very annoying. Better window management - in its current state it is simply nonexistent. Working in Macos always feels like you scour through an unsorted pile of stuff. Trackpad drivers are very poor, pretty much any Windows laptop, regardless of price, beats it. My issues is that I like to tap, I don't like to press the trackapd, and Apple REALLY wants you to press it. As a result, right click tap works with a huge delay and only half the time unless you do some terminal magic, and tap-dragging simply isn't a thing, you HAVE to press down, which I really don't like. Finder needs to show you the root by default and allow full access to it, as well as all OS files. I want to see my entire drive when I open it. More hotkeys. For everything. Macos relies heavily on mouse usage, this only slows me down. Remove fullscreen virtual desktop and just maximize the app on a maximize button press. The X button should actually close the app, not minimize it, as of now, its behavior is completely random from app to app. Add a proper address bar to Finder as it is in Explorer. Other times it’s great for online shopping and just general Safari browsing. I’ve really tried to force myself to use it for everything, but just like you, it’s only filled a few niche areas, where my iPhone, Mac, and AppleTV can handle most other things. I bought an iPad mini 6 after a lifetime of using android phones and PCs. I think because of the size and the fact it stands out as my only apple product, it’s very clearly filling the role you’re describing. It’s definitely not capable of performing most of my school tasks as I use statistical softwares and the interface of a PC is just preferable to what I do, but it’s fantastic for being a portable tool for note taking, taking online meetings, reading, word processing in the go, and web browsing. I think advertising the larger iPad as a desktop/laptop replacement is a weird move. It’s definitely supplemental, but not a replacement.

The iPad mini is so great. Enjoy it!

Great explanation, hobby computer fits great as the name for it. Of course I disagree that the iPad cannot be used for creating, and shortsighted view that it's for consumption is really tiresome. But I'm not surprised many see it that way - in your case you cannot code on it, and that is your creativity outlet as well. But you can edit photos, make drawings, sketches, you can easily create and play music on it. I use it for all that, though music more casually for now. On top of that I use it to organize my hobbies, running a guild, handling D&D session stuff, controlling the Discord server and other neat small things that come together nicely in one package I can take anywhere. I use my windows pc mainly, I have a laptop for work, Steam Deck for some random mobile gaming, and yeah, iPad is the perfect hobby computer for my use case, and for many others.
@shawn.hickmanАй бұрын
To be clear, I wasn’t saying the iPad can’t be used for creative work. I know many people who do very creative work with the iPad. I was simply sharing my experience for the work I do.
@gerardrosalesАй бұрын
The iPad experience becomes so much better for people who also own a Mac when they stop convincing themselves to try and use it as a computer replacement. iPadOS is intentionally limited whether we like it or not simply not to strike competition with the Mac and this has been Apple's obvious stance for a lot of years now. iPadOS deviating from iOS was simply a marketing rebrand and I learned not to expect much from every WWDC keynote since I will just set myself up for disappointment. It's also one of the main reasons why I truly believe the iPad mini is the last "real" iPad because it's not being marketed as a PC replacement to save everyone else from the potential frustrations.

Thanks for the video. I don't think anyone ever inteded the Ipad to be a Mac "replacement". Rather an alternative... to be fair. Your arguments for your use cases are 100% valid. The argument for the iPad as an alternative to a Laptop is also 100% valid in other use cases. My use case: Browsing, Mails, Spreadsheets, Keynote. That's the main dish I'm cooking up. The side-dishes are all kinds of other dedicated Apps which sometimes I find better than doing it all in Browsers on a Mactop. I have been using the iPad Air 5 with Magic Keyboard for about a year and a half as my only "Computer". And I'm doing fine. I love the Mac too - and my Macbook/Air will never be parted with :-)

This was an excellent video about how, you use your iPad. As for myself, I always buy the basic iPad model with max specifications. So, my current version is a basic iPad 9th generation with 256GB and the cell data option paired, with a Logitech Combo Keyboard and of course Apple's 1st generation pencil. Prior to the Covid-19 virus, I did zero office work on my iPad. However, during the many months working three to four days per week from home this changed and my iPad became a life saver, I used the following: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, Zoom, Webex Meet, Tele-health, and Photos. Today, while my primary system is an Apple desktop computer the iPad fits nicely between my Android smart phone and my desktop computer (smile...smile).

I’ve an iCrap Air 5th Gen and at best it’s an okay-ish device, at best, and only for consuming information, not producing it: the sensor to unlock the iCrap using your fingerprint works erratically (my sister has a 4th Gen Air and it’s the same with hers); transferring files out of this crap of device - documents, audio/video, pictures - is a NIGHTMARE if the target device is not part of the walled garden universe, and the keyboard auto-complete functionality goes crazy when you type in two different languages like I’m doing here in English and then in my native language when chatting with the fam - pfff, so much for such and “advanced device”. Can’t wait to get one of those new e-Ink devices like the one from BOOX or this other one I just learned about, Daylight ❤. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I love the iPad for editing photos as well. However, one thing I have trouble with is photo file management. I’d love to see a video about your process from importing photos you’ve taken, to editing them on your iPad, to exporting. Where do you store your raw files (or jpgs)? Cloud storage? On your iPad? Sync with Lightroom on your Mac? Etc. etc. Not sure if that’s the type of content you want to put on your channel or not though. Anyway, love your videos, keep them coming man!
@shawn.hickmanАй бұрын
Thanks for watching! I'm down for doing any kind of video about photography. I use Lightroom and Adobe's cloud storage for all my raw files. I used to use Lightroom Classic but I found it a little tedious to sync across devices. So I'll either import my raw files to Lightroom on the iPad or Mac and then have them sync across devices. After editing I'll export jpgs from Lightroom and put them in Apple Photos. The only raw images I have in Apple Photos are ones I've taken with my iPhone.

To be clear, I wasn’t saying the iPad can’t be used for creative work. I know many people who do very creative work with the iPad. I was simply sharing my experience for the work I do.
Agreed, but to just accept the iPad for what it is. Thanks for watching 👍
Love your passion Shawn as a techy. As you’re an avid macOS user, I’d be keen to see a video or two on your best apps for macOS and productivity tips like how you manage files etc and how you’ve refined your macOS setup over the years? Keep up the good work! 👌🏻
That’d be a fun video to make! Thanks for watching 👍
المقطع هادئ وبسيط ومريح للاستماع والمشاهدة ، معلومات واضحة وكلام واضح، شكرا لهذا المقطع ❤
Thanks for watching!
I love the Mac too - and my Macbook/Air will never be parted with :-)
I appreciate you sharing! The iPad truly is a highly flexible device for many people.
Thanks for sharing! Very cool to hear about your setup.
I think you finally hit the nail in the head! The iPad is a hobby computer! And yes, you can do everything that you can do on a Mac on it and like you said it’s just easier to do it on a Mac. I think for noncomputer people and it’s easier and more intuitive to do stuff on. I also love the professional geek terminology and I will be identifying as this!! Great video pal
Thanks for watching!
My biggest regret is having introduced my sister to the rotten apple products, I now have to find a way to detox her 😔
I hope you find something you enjoy using! Those new e-ink tablets do look cool.
Posture for using iPad like this for long period is crucial for your neck.
Yea, long sessions holding an iPad can get uncomfortable sometimes.
Nice summary. Which size of iPad Pro you are talking about?
Thanks! I'm using the 11" iPad Pro M4. Previously was using the 12.9" iPad Pro.
It’s frustrating because Apple is intentionally holding back the iPad, especially the pros. iPads are fully capable of running MacOS from a hardware standpoint. Could be that true laptop replacement but they want you to buy both.
Yea I've just accepted that I want/need both 🤷
Fair, balanced view. iPad is great for tablet stuff (casual) and some light or maybe heavy work, depending on the exact work of course. I see the ideal and appeal of a single do everything device. But you must use the best tool for the job. I like your mentality of Mac=work while iPad=play. Different form factor, different mindset and focus.
Thanks!
I just use any device that runs linux
Totally fair 👍
Thanks for the content. Just to add, I’ve used an iPad since the first iteration and settled on it being a tool for research, study and planning. I have long upgrade cycles as I don’t need much power for that but it’s useful for language learning (apps / book reading / flash cards / KZread videos) and sketching out thoughts. Study is also useful (courses) whilst I use my computer at the same time. Obviously photo editing too. I was deep in the Mac ecosystem but now I use iPad for creativity / study. Mediocre windows for my boring workflow (analysis / spreadsheets). Comes in at a reasonable cost also.
Now that is an excellent use of an iPad. Thanks for sharing!
Dude, you're overcomplicating things. If you like using a Mac for your work, just stick with it. Don't sound like someone dreaming about a handsome, rich, half-American, half-French guy to fulfill your fantasy. Keep it simple.
lol wut?
literally
Totes
nice ending note
Thanks!
my ipad is my art computer
Nice!
