Tips for Designing Better Drop Shadows in Figma for Developers & Designers
With the introduction of iOS 7 in 2013, Apple aggressively moved away from a skeuomorphic aesthetic, to what is commonly called “flat design”. The biggest casualty with this transition was the loss of drop shadows.
Drop shadows are an essential tool for any UI designer and developer. They help add contrast and dimension, improve visual hierarchy, and can make certain interactions clearer. Thankfully, drop shadows have been coming back to UI design over the past few years.
In this video, I show you how make great looking drop shadows for your app in Figma.

Thanks! Maybe I can make a follow up video for dark mode. My approach wouldn't be too different. The only thing I would be more mindful off is making sure there is enough contrast between the background and foreground colors so that you can actually see the shadows.
Newby designer here - I really appreciate that you explained the thought process behind your choices. A lot of the time, I'm just looking at my designs, and I can't put into words why it's just not right haha. Thanks for making this!
