Becker's Model Aircraft

Becker's Model Aircraft

I'm all about scale model aircraft - particularly getting them posed in the air where they belong!

I also like to scratch build/kitbash the occasional scifi fantasy thing, what-ifs and what could have beens.

    David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA I had heard that the company producing a 1:32nd-scale kit of the Avro Lancaster RAF Heavy Bomber had fallen rather short. Just recently (days not months), I have seen/heard here on KZread model-building videos that two manufacturers have assayed an effort: Hong Kong Models and Border Model. I saw in an online retailer’s website both offerings. I have no idea as to the value (or the lack thereof) of either one, having seen neither. The first (I actually see at least two), most obvious, issue is 1) whether the kit you deem the “most disappointing model kit of the year” is truly abysmal, or that perhaps a kit with certain positive attributes nevertheless has numerous shortcomings that in the overall weight of them makes it not worth the struggle, or a poor value for the price. (Another possibility might be that you in your judgement are overly critical; from what I know of you through this forum, I do not think so-you strike me as bright and sensible, legitimately holding high expectations for kits costing well over 100 bucks, quid, or whatever currency you may use-though one must note that chance.) Next, 2) Is the other kit a poor option, as well? On another matter, I think it was you who roughly a year past had been documenting in a series of build videos your assembling Hobby Boss’s 1:32nd-scale kit of the Consolidated B-24D Liberator USAAF Heavy Bomber (or possibly a “J”). I have some interest (my qualifier here solely being a function of their prohibitive cost for me; in truth, I greatly desire them and numerous others. I also would require the paints, glues, tools, equipment, aftermarket detail sets, etc., necessary for taking polystyrene parts out of a large, sturdy, corrugated cardboard box and assembling them according to the instructions manual). My first choice would be the Tamiya 1:32nd-scale kits of the early Chance Vought F4U Corsair USN/-USMC/FAA Fighter series. Moreover, we I able to afford them, I would buy several of each, to reproduce the various incarnations of them; for example, with the F4U-1D, I would convert the second to an F4U-1C, which had four M3 Browning 20mm cannons in place of the six M2 Browning 50-calibre machine-guns; and the third to a Corsair IV FAA warbird. A few I would have in a static pose, wheels down, in a diorama of a cluster of mechanics servicing them under a long, sinuous row of lofty palm trees, but scant metres from the sultry, brilliant glare of the sun in the steamy south Pacific. However, I, too, prefer to build my aircraft replicas in flight. To maintain some measure of verisimilitude, however, I would 1) ensconce into the cockpit a well-detailed aviator figure, and 2) wire inside it a small, though highly durable electric motor. The arrangements that realistically would portray such an engaging setting as a Corsair engaged in a steep climb are complex enough that most could not even contemplate the idea. At best, most seem to accept posing it upon a stand. For me, a plane simply cannot even look as though it were flying with a grotesquely oversized telegraph pole stuck into the belly. I may have conceived a functional solution. I tell you this because I infer you to have both the means and the technical capacity to implement my idea in your aspirations for a better way to display your plane models gear up. This borrows from what television and motion picture production calls the Chapman crane, a highly robust, amply counterbalanced gimbals apparatus that supports a modern, high-resolution film or video camera well above the ground, in a manner that enables the operator to approach the subject of the shot in progress through graceful turns through the air, or dramatic soaring and swooping, and similar dynamic action to achieve the action of the scene. One also can suspend a performer in the air in an arrangement that the viewer cannot see. An excellent example of this is the crane-cradle method that the special effects crew of Superman: The Movie (1978) used to simulate the title character (Christopher Reeve) in flight, where 1) the actor lay upon a sort of “cradle” formed to fit his body, in turn covered in the costume; 2) the technicians attached this padded rack to an adaptation of the Chapman crane, 3) and they positioned the mechanical components behind the performer and anything else that belongs in the shot, thus out of view of the camera. For my purpose in this explanation, the supporting apparatus would be far smaller, needing only 1) to hold forth a mass of a half-dozen or so kilogrammes at most, 2) whilst remaining completely out of sight of the viewer. The crane also would serve as an insulated conduit for electrical wiring to provide current to the motor(s), the lighting, etc. I would recommend one line of ample ampere capacity to power everything, and inside the model would be circuitry mechanisms to distribute the electricity from a junction box or a control board. The next part of this is 3) the background: this must represent in simulation a sky at some reasonable altitude. I also propose the simplicity of a clear azure vista; no shifting clouds or ground features receding to the right. Otherwise, one must plan the backdrop, synchronising any movement with what the aeroplane (singular or plural) would be doing at that moment. All these together would present to the viewer a remarkably innovative “aerial diorama”, though it cleverly simulates a rather conventional imagery: aircraft in flight, which I call an “aerial diorama”. Another major element in all this is what I call a “forced perspective aerial diorama”, which starts with a basic aerial diorama. I then would include models of (well, to continue with my example above) an F4U-1D Corsair engaged in a steep climb. However, the first one would be that of the Tamiya 1:32nd-scale kit. Round 33 cm behind and slightly to the fore would be the Tamiya 1:48th-scale Corsair kit; however, I understand that a new kit maker (well, new to me, at least), Magic Factory, offers a new tool 1:48th-scale kit of the Corsair F4U-1A/2 USMC Fighter, with two models in a “Dual Combo Limited Edition” offer (MF 5001), which I understand to exceed in fidelity the twenty-five-year-old kit of the Japanese company. Their pricing may prove prohibitive, though: at best, more than twice that of the Tamiya kits. Next would be Tamiya’s 1:72nd-scale Corsair kit; with proper placement at different angles, one ought to be able to include two. Similarly, the AFV Club 1:144th-scale Chance Vought F4U-1/-1A/-1C/-1D Corsair Fighter (2 Kits) would populate the background. Would anything along these lines serve to facilitate your aspirations for a better way to display your plane models gear up?

    Model looks good Chris. Fascinating to see how you do the depressions of the quilted skin, have you got a good method for the balooning out bits. Who makes that sander machine? looks great. I'm with you on the "in flight" thing, but I think there is a place for on ground too. I've had a plan for some time to do a hangar scene with about 3 spitfires under repair, like an engine out here, a landing gear being fixed there and so on. People have a place in things especially those who labour long into the night so the toffs can give gerry a hard time tomorrow. I suppose its not just about the plane for me.

    Gday Chris, great to see ya back, and thanks for the update on Penny, I was hoping she's doing well and not been chasing the chickens. That's a trigger on your exposure to "rug rats", my granddaughter teaches third grade and catches a bug or two. I've been watching that new wand, I know its well worth it but up in the colonies it is running about $50 USD. I found a chap in Canada who has auctions on stash collections and been burning a bit of my model budget. The dollar exchange is about .74 to 1.00. But the postage has gone up. I might just have a go at your " new toy" . I understand it is USB chargeable.. You have converted me to wheels up building. I discovered for the smaller kits you can actually use bicycle spokes - ironically a homage to the Wright Brothers. Great to see you publish a video, the camera is a nice acquisition too, saves time on editing. Cheers Bob

    Thanks Bob, always good to hear from you! Penny is doing well and good, been taking her for lots of walks. The new wand thing is not just a gimmick - I thought it would be, at $75AUD a bit of a gamble to buy, but its turned out to a be a versatile little tool for sanding small things away, particularly when doing seam cleanup. Good for you going wheels up - I hope to have my 3D printed flight stands done at the end of this year, fingers crossed....

    Glad you’re back, Becker. Can’t wait to watch how you do stressed skin - I’m toying with the idea of doing that lightly on a 1/72 Revell B-17F (crazy, huh?) but it probably would be better (r.e. less difficult?) on a larger scale model. Also, ironic isn’t it how kit makers festoon their models with interior detail that will never be seen again but baulk at giving us seated pilot or crew figures that will definitely be visible inside the model. Go figure. ☺️

  • @beckersmodels

    Thanks Ron - yeah the stressed skin is stressing me out, I forgot to mention i will practice first on a mule (have plenty of those), before the real thing. I will video the whole process though. I like the idea of doing it on the 1/72 B-17 (the perfect scale for that aircraft I think), but would take a very steady hand! And yes, I'm constantly annoyed at the interior detail/open everything up trend but no figures or poseable flight surfaces or closed wheel well doors!

Would like to see Tamiya produce some armor with interior of a subject or two that hasn't been churned out ad nauseam...maybe a chieftain? Would be a happy chappy with a decent ka 52 in 48th as well....oh and a 1/48 super marine scimitar!

  • @beckersmodels
    @beckersmodels20 күн бұрын

    Agree to disagree John. Airfix is B Grade, Tamiya is A grade, on all objective measures save decal quality. Airfix make good kits, but 20 year old Tamiya "entry" level 1/48 kits are better for the beginner in my opinion from cost, buildability and quality control. Airfix kits are VERY expensive here in Australia, in comparison with Tamiya and many other brands...

I'm wrapping up the Tamiya 1/32 F4U-1A, it was the most complicated I've ever built eith 9ver 300 parts, but as you said the engineering is off the charts good! Question... Is the Spit VIII that much better than the V?

  • @beckersmodels

    The Tamiya VIII is miles ahead of the HB Mk V or even the new Border Model version in 1/35 scale. If you can stand to wait, Kotare will have a Mk Va out soon, with a Mk Vc wing variant probably in a year or two...

    What I suspect is a big deterrent to beginners is that there is VERY little advice on the net about how to brush paint, other than detail painting. Not everyone is willing to commit to an airbrush and compressor right away. Also, spray cans for various reasons can be very impractical or inconvenient. The impression given is that brush painting just can't be done, and this is false. Thanks for this vid, BTW. I will keep these Tamiya kits in mind.
