Peter Jackson’s King Kong is one of my favorite movies of all time

Peter Jackson’s King Kong is amazing! I saw it twice and theaters and bought the DVD on the first day of release. My only complaint is that it’s too long, and drags in some parts, most of the stuff on the boat could have been cut out. Other than that this is a masterpiece and it’s my favorite Kong movie.

The original 1933 classic is an absolute gem of Golden Age Hollywood. However, I struggle to really care or fear for the characters of that movie. Plus Anne screams a little too much for me. Yet Peter Jackson’s version of the original story. Makes me care about even some of the minor characters. Like Jimmy or Hayes; unfortunately though. They’re two big problems that hold the Peter Jackson remake back. From easily being better than the original film. The movie is practically too long/the pacing is kinda slow at times. The other problem, some of the CGI effects don’t always hold up well. Despite those big problems. Peter Jackson’s remake of the original movie. Is easily my favorite version of King Kong!

Thanks for that great essay! I really love this movie. It has it all: a great story, great characters, great actors, a great Ann Darrow - and of course great monsters - pun intended 😉 And Andy Serkis and his cgi-crew created the first Kong with a great heart and a beautiful soul. I am absolutely willing to forgive Peter Jackson his few overwrought indulgences in a few action sequences which go on for far too long and aren't always plausible. These few weaknesses can be easily fixed with a remote control 😊 It's a pity that this great movie is somewhat underrated. But it aged extremely well, and Peter Jackson's and Andy Serkis' 20 years old great ape is still the best Kong ever. "Kong - Skull Island" is a fun movies with a few engaging storylines and good actors. But Legendary's Kong, who is a pure computer product which was created without the input of an actor through mo-cap, cannot reach the class of Jackson's Kong, and it was a huge mistake to make him so large. This was done in order to be able to pair him with Godzilla in two following movies. But it reduced Kong's ability to communicate with humans in a meaningful way. Like you I love Peter Jackson's scene of Kong and Ann Darrow frolicking on a frozen Central Park pond. The two of them deserved to have a few minutes of lighthearted togetherness. And it makes the ensuing machine-gun fire on both of them even more heartbreaking. I also liked the love story between Ann Darrow and the famous author who is supposed to write a movie script for Carl Denham's planned movie, which he wants to shoot on Skull Island. It isn't really a love triangle because the relation of Kong and Ann has no erotic elements. Peter Jackson wisely eliminated this rather tacky aspect. It's instead a wonderful friendship between two creatures with complex feelings who managed to understand and therefore deeply care for each other. Ann's feeling for Kong might be comparable with Diane Fossey's love for the mountain gorillas which she studied with great passion. And Kong loves Ann Darrow because he was so lonely, and he protects her like a loyat dog who would do everything for a beloved human owner. Eliminating the erotic elements between Ann and Kong means that the human love story works a lot better and the happy end for Ann and her writer boyfriend is more believable. I have a hunch that Peter Jackson's Kong has become more appreciated in recent year because it's so much better than Legendary's MonsterVerse. Just one final remark: the only thing about the movie which I really dislike, are the native people who live on Skull Island. The come across more as primitive zombies with a nasty evil streak than competent people who try to make the best of their difficult living conditions! This is somewhat racist, and I am sure that Peter Jackson would do this differently today!

4:24 The movie’s composer is James Newton Howard, not James Horner. But you’ve done a great review of a beloved piece of childhood nostalgia for me, nonetheless. I grew up being enthralled with this version of King Kong ever since I was very little and it also served as my introduction to Peter Jackson…who has also instilled in me through this film and in the LOTR trilogy a passion for action-and-adventure, creature-design and world-building that continues to this day.

The scene on the ice is a tragic scene. This creature lived his whole life and it appears as though this was his first opportunity at having fun. He was laughing as he spun around on the ice, laughing with Ann, only to have the moment destroyed by people who just don't get it. I loved this movie, but at the same time, this movie brings something out in me that I don't like. It reiterates to me how morally corruptable the human race is. It shows me the true levels of evil that the human race has the potential for. It reiterates in me why I hate people and care more for animals than humans.

Yes there is an almost LORD OF RINGS sense of fate about this version of KING KONG. (I also think her choosing to go on the journey was because of Driscol as well as because she has nothing to lose) Without charm NO Version of KING KONG works, I can see both human features & facial reactions in Kong's face, where they made the most of the CGI format (notice how there are far more facial reactions than in the original, which was a wise decision to do that). Real life Gorillas don't & probably can't make as many face reactions, BUT it works so well in this film to see something human there

Why are you taking bad about carl denham carl denham is not a bad Guy in this version maybe if you were talking about fred wilson from King Kong 1976 or the Carl denham of the cancelled King Kong 1996 than your comparison would make more sense but it doesn’t

While Carl Denham is certainly not an antagonist in this film, he his certainly a morally corrupt character who puts a lot of people's lives in danger, most of the crew dying from this escapade on the island. I certainly love Jack black in this role and I think his character has a lot of charm and charisma but he is what he is, I didn't feel like I talked too badly about him, but the facts are there.
