    I thought the Thomas subplot wasn't needed but love most of The Chosen. For a protestant based show, it's given me so many moments to meditate on. The protestant pastor did correct Dallas that in different languages it did mean "the rock". He's trying not to offend while filming. Jon doing John 6 at the Eucharistic Conference, was his way of doing what he couldn't on the show. I also agree with Judas being on board but the wrong ship. I feel sorry for him because he thought Jesus would fight like he got out of stoning and the cliff. The crushing blow showed he didn't care about the money, he just totally misjudged him. I also feel for someone who had his master tell him to "go and do it quickly" That might have made him think he was understanding his motive. Maybe

    For me, it's all in John 21:10-11: Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you just caught." So Simon Peter went over and dragged the net ashore full of 153 large fish. Even though there were so many, the net was not torn. Peter (the Pope) brought the fish (there are 153 different types of fish, representing every type of person) to Jesus in a net that doesn't break (the Church).

    I can understand that it is not enough for protestants to accept that Peter is not the rock on which the Church of Jesus is built, when He says I will build my church on this rock. But when Jesus says that He will give him the keys of the Kingdom ( church) then that should be crystal clear.

    I just think it’s a little corny. The show is friendly to the Catholic viewer but the overall vibe is Protestant. It seems they made a creative decision to strip away solemnity. But the relatable and modern tone of the dialogue and behavior doesn’t appeal to me. I don’t find it to be a convincing or realistic portrayal of the people or time period. I guess the show can be used as a jumping off point to fill in trivia knowledge on the biblical setting. But as a work of art, I think it’s cringe and would not recommend it to a non-Christian.

  • @yes2day100
    @yes2day1005 күн бұрын

    I am a Catholic and I do not think the show has an "overall Protestant vibe". I think perhaps you are watching the show with a bias. We Catholics have to accept that the Gospels are important to Protestants and to Messianic Jews and all who believe in Jesus, not just to us. But there are only a few areas of the Gospels where Protestants differ from Catholics - Peter as the original Pope, the importance of Mary, and the Eucharist. The importance of Mother Mary in this series is as Catholic as it gets. She is a pivotal character with a close relationship with her son. Many Protestants act as though she was a nonentity, but the series does not. Then there was the scene where Jesus makes Peter "the rock" - it isn't the Protestant version. It follows the scripture directly and allows the audience to make up its own mind what Jesus meant. However, I agree that this show has completely ignored the Eucharist, and that is very Protestant. The Catholic actor who plays Jesus, Jonathan Roumie, gently complained about that at the National Eucharistic Congress a few days ago when he read John Chapter 6, The Bread of Life discourse, in character as Jesus. It was spellbinding. During his talk he said the discourse was not included in The Chosen, and it was clear he was disappointed about that. Overall, however, the show seeks to walk a middle ground between the different denominations. BTW, many Protestants complain the show is "too Catholic", so, clearly, when it comes to the Gospels, you can't please everyone.

    @@yes2day100 you’re talking about the content of the show. Which I agree, the show is not pushing a Protestant message. It just looks like a work of art made by Protestants. My problem with the show is the design and feel of the show. It doesn’t feel authentic at all. I feel like a watching modern American evangelicals in costume. You see many anachronisms in the show. Stuff and ways of speaking that just don’t belong in a portrayal of ancient times.

  • @yes2day100
    @yes2day1005 күн бұрын

    @@Rome_77 Fair enough. We all have our specific taste. I personally don't find the dialog to be anachronistic so much as I believe - as Dallas Jenkins has said - that at every point in history, including the first century, people had their own linguistic shorthand, their own euphemisms and in-jokes. We won't know what they were in first century Judea and Galilee, but it is plausible to believe that they did have their own idioms. So to make the show relatable to modern audiences, The Chosen writers use the idioms familiar to us, in place of whatever the idioms were then. I personally much prefer this to the sort of strangled version of language used in most every other film version of The Gospels, where all the characters sound like the written scriptures - it is very unnatural. The Chosen has humanized the apostles in a way that no other work of fiction has ever done, and it has done so without detracting from their progress towards holiness - you can actually watch, step by step, how these very flawed individuals are moving towards their future as saints, and I think that is a good thing. But, fair is fair, we each like what we like! :).

  • @Rome_77

    @@yes2day100 if you actually think The Chosen is an authentic/convincing portrayal of near eastern people and that time period, I think you have bad taste (sorry!). I also find it goofy how they have Matthew and John carrying around little modern notebooks jotting down the words of Jesus. Little stuff like that bothers me. The show lacks a certain gravity and seriousness. Very casual feeling and undignified.

If anyone watches this show and does not read our Sacred Scripture, this is a grievous error. I was going to add that I think Season 5 will start with Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, and end with the Last Supper, going to the Garden of Getsemane, and the betrayal by Judas. My understanding was that Season 6 was Good Friday - after Jesus arrest, being brought to Pilate, Caiaphas, and back to Piate, to scourging and walk to Golgatha, to death on the cross, but also including taking down His body from the cross, wrapped in the linen cloths, and placed in the tomb (involving both Nicodemus and Yussif. Season 7, as you said would be resurrection... Easter Sunday, to ..... we don't know.

    I think the reason for the title of The Chosen is threefold. For sure, it refers to the apostles as his chosen followers. But I also think it refers to the Jewish people as the chosen people. And lastly of course, it refers to Jesus as the chosen one. Just my interpretation, for what it's worth. BTW, this is Nicolas's wife, Bobbie, writing this.

    You and the reviewers are picking up exactly what the creatives are putting down in the title being "The Chosen" rather than "The Jesus Show". I came across the show very early and that it focused on the disciples and people who interacted with Jesus was kind of the secret sauce that made it transcend it's "christian media" genre. It's simply a good tv drama.

    Christian sexual repression leads to sexual abuse. According to the French government, the Roman Catholic Empire raped over 32O,OOO innocent French children. Just since 195O. If we extrapolate from this French datum for the at least 8 other Roman Catholic dominant countries, we end up with over 3 million children raped by Roman Catholics just since 195O. The FBI is currently investigating the rampant level of sexual abuse of women and children in the Southern Baptist Convention. Which is the largest Christian denomination in America. Liberty University, the famous Evangelical University, recently was fined 14 million dollars for just ignoring the significant level of rape on their campus for many, many, many, decades. Christian sexual repression is not innocent, as it leads to an ugly level of sexual abuse. So take care whenever you are in the sexually toxic Christian community. Especially the child raping Roman Catholic Empire. Remember that idealism is always, always, always, based on denialism. This is why the Christian community is again attacking the LGBT community as being sexually dangerous. LGBT folks are not groomers. As the evidence demonstrates the actual groomers are largely sexually repressed Christian males. They are just engaging in ugly and hateful deflection to hide and conceal their own sexual toxicity. They are just scapegoating and distracting from their own sexually criminal behavior and history. "Look over there, not over here." So don't be fooled by all of their ugly and hateful lies. And remember that if Drag Queens are all about love, then it begs the question as to what Christianity is actually all about? So therefore perhaps Drag Queens can help Christians learn how to love better. As currently Christians all seem so love disabled. 💙
