Smudging, the Mass, and Cultural Appropriation w/ Fr. Cristino Bouvette | Ep. 81

How does smudging and Indigenous culture integrate with the Mass?
Join Archbishop Smith and Fr. Cristino Bouvette from the Diocese of Calgary as they discuss cultural appropriation and integration in the Mass, how much human culture is supposed to be seen in any liturgy, the Indigenous ritual of smudging, paganism vs. Christianity, the virtue of patriotism and much more.
Fr. Cristino Bouvette is a born and raised Albertan of mixed Cree-Métis and Italian heritage, ordained in the Diocese of Calgary in 2012. Fr. Cristino was the Liturgical Coordinator for the 2022 Papal Visit to Canada. He currently serves as Vicar for Vocations and Young Adults for the Diocese of Calgary and he is the chaplain for the St. Francis Xavier Chaplaincy for young adults.
In partnership with First Nations, Metis and Inuit Peoples from across Treaty Six, the Archdiocese of Edmonton supports Indigenous-led healing and reconciliation initiatives to guide our next steps. The Archdiocese of Edmonton has established a $3.2-million Indigenous Reconciliation Fund and convened an indigenous-led Discernment Circle to help frame our efforts. Further announcements will be made on the IRF soon. caedm.ca/indigenous-reconcili...

The purpose of the Mass is to Glorify God, not to please communities, encourage cultures or to make people feel comfortable.🙏🏻

Has the Church passed any reforms that prevent priests from abusing children? I know this is a serious problem and has been for decades.

Thank you. When I was trying to get background information on smudging I found a number of web sites indicated a spirit connection. For example, "Smudging calls on the spirits of sacred plants to drive away negative energies and restore balance. " I don't believe that this issue was addressed. If even some who practice smudging believe this, how can we participate in this at Mass without even an explanation or a choice to remove ourselves from this.

This is so sad. If every community "inculturates" the liturgy in their parish how are we still one? We need one mass, one language, and one expression if we are to be one. How about we try going to meet Christ where he is and break out of the 1960s to get with the times. May God please to bless us all

Have you never participated in a mass conducted in a language other than your own, which I assume is English? Or Latin? I have attended several masses held in Spanish, though I could not understand a word of the homily, I knew the meaning of the various parts of the liturgy and could follow along the exact same scripture readings using my missal, which are used each day in countries all around the globe. That is a far cry from various factious protestant church groups none of which use the complete Bible, nor have a daily missal to keep them focused together. I have also heard both Orthodox and Catholic masses in Ukrainian - practically for all intent and purposes the same. In North West Territories of Canada I heard translated into the Dene language, every word of the readings, a Bishop's homily and the liturgy all for the sake of a few elder worshippers. Such unity in regard to God's Holy Word, despite diversity is what impressed me as a convert becoming Catholic 15 years ago - the whole universal church is always focused "on the same page", though different languages are used. At the first Pentecost, the Holy Spirit enabled Apostles to teach via all the different languages of people who gathered by thousands to listen. Jesus Christ is not limited to using only one language to keep us united in His faith. There seems nothing sad about that to me - all the more reason to be joyful.

@@a.rekkenbeil3798 Why do you assume my native language is English? When the Apostles were teaching at Pentecost they weren't speaking different languages. The miracle was that the people each heard the word in their own language.

@@anneclark9508 Because you wrote your comment in English it seemed reasonable for anyone to assume that is your language, or one of your languages. I did place a question mark to show I sought clarification from you. Your comment asserts everyone should possess and use the same language for mass - for the sake of unity - as you said "if we are to be one". That sounds to me similar to Baha'i faith believers who hope for world peace and pray all Nations around the world will become united by one language. However, Baha'is do not believe in the Holy Trinity. If you read the 2nd chapter of Acts, it's very clear the gift of tongues the Holy Spirit bestowed on the Apostles were miracles by which they spoke, so others (not yet possessed of the Holy Spirit) could recognize their own language being spoken by Jesus's disciples. "1 And when the days of the Pentecost were accomplished, they were all together in one place: 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them: 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak. 5 Now there were dwelling at Jerusalem, Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 And when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded in mind, because that every man heard them speak in his own tongue. 7 And they were all amazed, and wondered, saying: Behold, are not all these, that speak, Galileans? 8 And how have we heard, every man our own tongue wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, 11 Jews also, and proselytes, Cretes, and Arabians: we have heard them speak in our own tongues the wonderful works of God. 12 And they were all astonished, and wondered, saying one to another: What meaneth this?

St Francis Xavier whose feast day is tomorrowConverted tens of thousands in my native India and he would’ve said the mass in Latin. The Novus Ordo set in the vernacular divides members of even the same parish. Those that attend the Spanish mass are likely not to ever encounter those that attend the English mass and vice versa and so on.End it would be nice to go to a Catholic church anywhere in the world NBA able to follow along in one language that is Latin instead ofTrying to find an English mass! And what is wrong with reserving a sacred language for the worship of God?

The gods of the pagans are demons (Psalm 95:5). Therefore the gods of the Muslims, the modern Jews, the Hindus, the Buddhists, etc. are in fact demons and not the one, true God.

Another excellent and thought-provoking episode: thank you! I have a more general question: I miss the original, extended introduction to each episode, with all the quotations, and, in particular, the introduction of the participants. So, will some of it be reintroduced? This is especially important for those who, like me, listen to the podcast and don't see the little blurb under the video. In the last two episodes I struggled to follow at the beginning as I did not know the guests who were giving us so much precious information or where their expertise came from. And I know of Father Cristino ("little Christ" in Italian!) from previous episodes, but perhaps many people who don't know may have been equally confused in the first part of this episode. Moreover, there may be people who get to this video or to the podcast for the first time and may not even know who His Grace or Jenny are. A short introduction would take very little time and be very useful, I think. Why not?
