    Great conversation. Garry has stayed one of my idols since I started playing bass in the late 80’s. INXS were one of the best and fun live bands I’ve ever seen! Super tight! And yes, having one of the best male vocalists fronting this gang did help a bit of course. 😄 I’m seriously considering checking out Garry’s basses when my cash flow allows me to! Having just the one versatile quad pickup in the right spot there just beats having two pickups, I think. Having two of those powerful beasts pulling the strings would (potentially) make for a serious tone sucker! I’m mostly a Fender / MusicMan player and when I tried a 2HB MusicMan StingRay once, I knew for sure: nope, this ain’t gonna work... But then again, I don’t know how powerful exactly Garry’s pickups really are compared to the MusicMan’s. Having the option of a extra single coil in the bridge position could work imo. My former bass teacher used to have an old Fender Telecaster bass from 68/69 that he put a extra Jazz pickup in wich sounded great with the original P single coil: like a filthy jazzbass. But, I think most PJ basses (except for Spectors and Yamaha BB’s) only sound great with the pickups wired in series, because in the standard parallel wiring you loose too much mids you actually really need in most situations... 🖖

    I was at the Weekend Wogan show when Brian May was on. I'd known Elio Pace for a while then, and met Neil a few times (I am also a bass player) and been to see Elio's tour with the Billy Joel Songbook. The next time I saw Elio play, I noticed that Neil was absent. Elio said, 'Neil's got another gig tonight. Madison Square Gardens with Queen!' Neil still plays with Elio. Lovely man.

    Overall a great video. FINALLY someone played some blues in a Demo. Too many Slap or funk videos. I'm looking at purchasing the U5 next week (July, 2024) as my very first bass. After a very long research process, this bass makes the most sense for a beginner with a little better budget. Now my one gripe about most Short Scale reviews, like @BassedInVegas stated, and I blame Leo Fender for starting this stigma. Short Scale basses are not (just) for Kids! I saw you added a Special Thank You to your mate who lent you the U5. I too have health issues, but even my friends who have been playing Guitar and/or Bass for decades have pointed out, Short Scales have a lot to offer, without much of a loss. If Leo Fender would have marketed them as alternative option to a 34" scale, instead of as a "kids toy", I think we wouldn't be having these comments today. ANYWAY... good video.

  • @sonnyportacio6238
    @sonnyportacio623823 күн бұрын

    @sirdude555 You hit some good points! There is certainly an undeserved stigma with short scales. I own short scales and the U5 and here's where it rests with me: Comfortable playing (lighter weight, ergonomics, easier reach and bendability) and it has a solid bass sound. Put it through a good amp with a good player and you'll get great results. The final sound is what matters. Do a blind test with a band or recording studio and would people really be able to tell it was a short scale? I wouldn't think so.

    @12:21 I love this comment about "rising to the occasion" b/c as much as I got my rocks rolling and my naive HS/JV music phase from listening to SP, they just made me want other things musically after a while. They introduced me lots of other music, and jam behaviors, but I started realizing that the group is not a perfect ensemble. Especially when the role of leadership is simply held down by the instrumentation. I can play Mike under the table if it came to solos, jazz, intention, but his band is delivering the best of the band sound in the songs. the performance is less intentional.

    Really need a couple of good synth sounds, a la I Wanna Dance With Somebody and 24K Magic. I get the feeling that Boss has never progressed in the synth tone department. I still use an ME-50B and have an SY-1, so that is my perspective. My board is failing on the footswitches (mainly the 2nd one that cycles the synth/distortion), so I need something like this. I love having a volume/expression pedal built in. You did a great job in showing the strengths. The sad part is that you ignored what I'm after, which doesn't bode well. But you were very good and honest. Thank you!
