    I rented a Tesla Model 3 and the charging experience was absolutely seamless for a complete newb. Car navigates you to the station. Roll up. Plug in. Done. I'm looking at buying an EV and these other charging situations just seem like such a fucking headache. So many apps and inconsistent chargers. It's just not even close.

    Stupid question- will you pay less for the electric bill if you go with a L2 from a L1?

  • @goneelectric
    @goneelectric13 күн бұрын

    @@eveanddell Typically, it is cheaper to charge with L2 than L1, since voltage for L2 (~240v) is closer to your car’s battery voltage. In essence it’s more efficient. Just have to balance that with installation costs for L2, which can vary quite a bit based on several factors. A few folks in the comments for this video have shared how much it cost for them.

    Excellent video. Thanks. I'm currently a PHEV owner and charge only at home. My next car will be full-on BEV, but Lordy this video does not inspire confidence in today's public charging infrastructure. OTOH, now that Tesla has begun to open its Supercharger network to other brands (Ford, as of today, GM soon to follow), that access may help bridge the reliability gap so painfully evident in your experience. OTOH, Tesla's CEO has just laid off his entire Supercharger organization, casting doubt on whether he'll continue to build out his network or, importantly, even continue to maintain what's now in place.

  • @goneelectric

    Thanks! Glad it shed some light on the public charging experience. I think being able to use the SC network will be a net positive, though it won’t always be smooth, especially as more and more non-Tesla folks use it, and who knows what will happen if Elon decides against maintaining existing stations. Good to have home charging!

    My first EV charge (Bolt EUV) was at that exact EA station at the Vons in Seal Beach in July 2023. I had about 50% state of charge but wasn't sure if a charge would be successful so I didn't want to let it get any lower. Nine months later, all the charging anxiety I had buying the car is gone. Totally dependent on public charging. Rarely had an issue charging, and where I did, there's another charger not too far away.

    L2 charging is essentially the same as L1 in terms of battery wear. It is L3 DC fast charging that is hard on the battery, although even then it’s not as bad as it is often made out to be. Charging beyond the 10-80% range is harder on the battery. We’ve been charging exclusively on an L2 for 2.5 years, and the battery capacity hasn’t changed. Being able to fully charge in 10 hours instead of 36 is hugely important for us, as our daily trips tends to be fairly lengthy.

    Level 1 at 240 volts in Portugal gives a charge rate of 2.5kw. With solar panels and home battery, once that battery is full I plug the car in and get free power. This works for 6-8 months, and the rest of the year I plug in overnight. Much better than spending $1000 on a Wall box.
