    Many of the ChargePoint level 2 charging stations are 'shared', meaning that if another car plugs in on the other cord, the charging rate would drop from 6kW to about 3kW. This is due to the wire that feeds the station being not 'beefy' enough to handle the current required for 12kW power. (Cheaper installation, while still looking like two available cords.) So if the app says the station charges at "3.3 - 6.6kW" that means the two sides of the station 'share' the current from the limiting incoming wire. If the app says the station charges at "6.6 kW" both sides, that is 'not shared', so the post was installed with a fat enough incoming wire to be able to do 6.6kW on each side, even with two cars plugged in. If your workplace is buying ChargePoint stations, encourage that they be facilitized so that the two sides do not need to be 'shared'.

    What's an RFID card? Thanks for this video. It was very informative. I'm looking ar EVs, and a few days ago looked at a couple of these chargers, wondering how to use them. Both were at car dealerships and were free.

    Glad it was helpful. RFID is a digital communication technology- it’s built into payment cards (among other things that enable data transfer). Most, if not all, modern credit cards have built-in RFID, allowing them to be “tapped” for payment transfer.

    As long as the Chargepoint app shows the same kw for each of the two handles on the dispenser (6.6/6.6 kw, or sometimes 7.2/7.2 kw) then energy is not shared between two cars charging simultaneously from the same dispenser. If the app shows a range like 3.3-6.6 kw for each handle, then that particular Chargepoint station shares energy between cars using the same dispenser simultaneously. In my experience, a vast majority of Chargepoint L2 are not shared and are quite reliable.

    Are all charged points level 2 Chargers or do they have higher speed?

  • @goneelectric

    @goneelectric

    Жыл бұрын

    ChargePoint operates both level 2 and DC fast charging units. At this particular station, there were four level 2 chargers (6kw) and two DC fast chargers. Their DC fast chargers supply energy at 50kw+, depending on which model you’re using. A majority right now in the US are 50-62kw, though they do have newer, faster units.

    When i tap to try and start a charging session from my android app, my phone brings up my credit card (wallet?), not the charge point app. Anyway to correct this? I have to manually go in the app, locate the chargers and try to start that way. Today it kept saying charging started, but the handle wouldn't release. Eventually chargepoint locked me out and i couldnt charge

    That’s annoying. It’s often a guessing game as to whether you’ll be able to tap or whether you’ll have to manually locate the specific dispenser you’re at. The charger locations often do a very poor job of maintaining hardware, and software is often fraught with the problems. Besides changing dispensers or rebooting your phone, you can call CP customer service and hopefully they can help.

    DCFC is vital for road trips, but level 2 charging like this is great to top up while you are at destinations such as schools, workplaces, hotels, or parks as shown. I hope to find a level 2 charger like this the next time I visit my regional roller coaster park.
