    Apple need to launch an 8"-9" handheld. Imagine the M4 chip powering an OLED handheld gaming console! holy hell. It would be able to play games at the highest quality, and allow for 24 hour play-time on a single charge. In the meantime I think i'll be getting an Ally X.

    I don't understand this logic. Tech bloggers were saying don't buy rtx 2080 wait for next generation and crypto mining thing happened and people like me ended up using rx 470 4gb for 3 more years. I say don't buy ally x if you already have Ally, do not need sd card and you ALWAYS play on your couch

    Pointless video, you might as well wait until 2030 when we will finally get 4060 performance APUs...The new AMD Strix Point APU with rdna 3.5 are not as good as you think, they will be an improvement compared to Z1e but only at higher TDPs, that's why no one is using them, besides the Ally even the Zotac Zone was announced with Z1e, and that's coming in September, that means AMD doesn't have a good successor to the Z1e yet for that 10W to 25W TDP range. Maybe next year we will get something better, but as i said if we keep waiting the things coming next year we might wait forever at that point. To me 2x battery life, 24gb of faster ram, 2 type c ports and better controller and cooling system ara a worth upgrade coming from the OG Ally, and it will be a pretty great device until Ally 2 in summer/fall 2025 with hopefully some new meaningful AMD processor

    Dbrand has the Rog ally x case for preorder now and you under sale the ram bump for raw fps 10 percent isn’t big but the major stutters will completely disappear at least the ones caused by ram starving that’s a massive improvement

  • @WinDeckTech
    @WinDeckTech12 сағат бұрын

    Most games won't experience that, however. In games where they are starving for ram yes it will improve. You can mimick the behavior obviously by dropping it down to something dumb like 1gb or 2gb vram but to be honest I find the games that eat vram and require more than 6gb are few and far between. One of the few titles I can find (at least that I own and play) are the recent Gears releases on PC and some other "bespoke" UE4 titles. Another example of needing vram and sys ram would be Diablo 4 as iirc the ultra or high settings require or heavily recommend 32gb of sys ram and I think at least 12gb of vram? That would be a perfect example of the stuttering felt with the texture resolution being set too high, but at the same time you absolutely do not need 4k quality assets in a 7 inch form factor which is typically running upscaling of some sort. I truly do believe the bigger benefit of having the higher RAM cap is still to just be able to set and forget at 8gb vram, which in turn would lead to smoother experiences when actually needed but not negatively retracting from performance when not required.

    i love the steam deck oled, but i there are 2 games i would like to play that i can't and that is helldivers 2 and bodycam. but i'm willing to wait a couple years for the steam deck 2. i'm now so used to having those 4 buttons on the back for jumping/running/action button/crouching/special ability and stuff like that, so i don't have to let go of the joysticks, and using gyro for aiming in fps and 3rd person action games. but i generally play older games. and intersting indie stuff, or double a. so the steam deck is a great fit for me personally. but i would maybe o for a windows device if the performance to price ratio is alluring, but windows on a handheld seems like alot of extra work with updates and all. and windows becoming more and more like spyware with each version, i think linux is the future of personal pc's.

Also the jump from 6400-7500 ram to 8533 and capacity from 16 to 24 is a big deal. I think a lot about this though because I don't play most new games so that might not be enough for 2x the price

    I want to upgrade to the Ally X because of the increase in battery life. My Ally is slowly getting less and less battery life. The increase in memory and speed is nice but not important unless I am modding games. The big improvement over my Ally is the 2280 SSD. I can put a 4 TB in there and they're less expensive per TB than 2230 SSD. P.s. Big 👍 for helping the doggo's.

Do you dabble in egpu? Or would you be more interested in checking it out now that there is tb4? The ram would be a nice help with that. 2280 is a big get and I can only.hope that all mfgs fit them in their devices. If the ayaneo air 1 s could do it in a much smaller chassis. Before the X got announced a used Ally with extreme chip was going for around 500-600 for a used good condition one but after being announced I saw a lot going for 400-450 on excellent condition. I managed to get my brother one for 350$ and it only had a few scratches here and there and I was a bit envious since I paid 650$ for mine even with a discount but then I realize how much I enjoy mine and think it’s worth every single dollar so just imagine how happy my brother is with the deal he got.

    You missing the point 890M is not good enough, the 16CU variant need 45W minimum so can't be used in Handheld, the 12CU is slightly better, so AMD and others will skip over 9000 gen anyway, so you will be stuck with expensive Chinese brands only. It's only Lunar lake that will get proper new gen performance which is coming to MSI Claw, Ally biggest weakness wasn't more performance but more battery and that's fixed. So no if you want handheld go for Ally X or wait for new MSI Claw

  • @WinDeckTech
    @WinDeckTech4 күн бұрын

    @TRX25EX yeah and how useful is that. Base? Reason why they upped ti to 13 min for the x. They'll likely make a z2e base off the new gpus and that's how they'll get their 13-28 or whatever people claim to paly their ally at when we all know 15 is the minimum realistically unless playing super light titles. Edit: as well, noted much by everyone else gpu performance is negligible past 28w. As posted in the video cards article and referenced. So...your point, get to it?

  • @TRX25EX
    @TRX25EX4 күн бұрын

    @@WinDeckTech Z2E won't use 800 series iGPU, it will skip this gen due to negligible benefit in doing so, they will go for 900 series of IGPU.... 12 CU is not much greater than 12CU of 780M, and 16 CU as I mentioned need power and alot more power, Z1 beats Z1E at 10W due to same reason, these iGPU have minimum power requirement to become usable and 16CU can't be usable at 15W or 20W which these handhelds use So that's definitely out of question, the new 880M and 890M are not much more efficient they just add more performance at more power requirements, they are made to be used in laptops than hand-helds

  • @WinDeckTech
    @WinDeckTech4 күн бұрын

    And you have exclusive insider knowledge of this? No where does it state that these chips were designed for 54 or 48 wattage whatever you claim it to be. The 7840u chips are the e act same in that they go in general purpose laptops and thin and lights. They get their tdp dictated by the mfg. You'll still get plenty of power our of a 28w 16cu chip. The 12 cu is a nice option and a minor improvement over the 780m however much like the z1 and z1e I fully expect to see similar considerations. And after the poor sales of the z1 chips they'll likely not cut them down that much again unless big improvements are made to low end tdp performance. Ally 2 or whatever the next gen chips will be will not skip and keep the 780 I'm sure.

  • @WinDeckTech
    @WinDeckTech5 күн бұрын

    The one thing that xg has over Oculink is that you can hot plug it, not as seamlessly as thunderbolt, but you don't need to power it down still. Gpd has been working on Hotplug, but you need to go with gpd... Also, remember the ally will bottleneck hard with a good GPU depending on the title. On my Legion I regularly can't get over 60 fps in Palworld with an egpu just due to the CPU overhead of the game, on a dedicated server. I think if you do want super easy hot plug-and-play, tb4 on the ally x is still a nice but limiting option, at least you can get more variety/power considerations. Another person had mentioned they hook up their 1080ti to their Lego which I think would be an awesome combo.

This, in my humble opinion, is due more to the RAM speed difference, not the capacity (which is a major focus point for some) battery life is an absolute godsend and this cannot be argued. Ok, it'll be rather hard to do my daily living going mute until then, but if taking a vow of silence works for the monks, I guess it's good enough for me. For real though... performance Will not be miles better suddenly because of the existence of more RAM. It will be lauded while the real reason will be veiled. The only thing the Ally has going for it is the dual USB C, faster charging (with still a 65w in the box..), and battery life. Grab a 100w capable battery pack and it will be infinitely more beneficial than spending another 899 plus tax (over 1k CAD before tax) for "triple" (double and a bit) the life on the X. I'm not against the Ally X, but I think they missed the mark on what consumers wanted in a pro-style device. At least give us a charger in the box that's capable of giving a full cap charge. IMO there are more reasons not to get the Ally X than for. If you don't have a handheld already, I'd say grab a cheap OG Ally and enjoy the benefit of a still great device for what it is. Software updates keep coming and improving that experience. Warranty work, however, eh? Even with the m.2 2280 on the x, people are going to dump the 1 TB and throw in a 4 TB at an increased cost vs even what was paid for the smaller ones found. Memory/storage pricing is insane these days. Granted that's a one-time investment but costly.

    Great information in the video and it is good to understand the points brought up before considering whether the ally x is right for you. We have tackled this very debate on the podcast so it is refreshing to have these points here in another video that you have made for us. The refreshes for these handhelds or next models within the series line are happening more frequently. In less than months there is talk already about the next one coming. The span between June 2023 and the present in 2024 has shown that for us. The challenge has been for Asus to release an updated handheld while keeping the price below that of a luxury handheld, which are a little more approximately than $1,000 depending on specs. You make the analogy that handhelds are releasing like new iPhones and yeah I do see the meaning in that. Some companies too even more frequently than one a year. Keep on keepin’ on WinDeckTech!

    I don't mind the tick-tock style of upgrading "reg vs s" mods. But, I do think these handheld manufacturers (everyone not just asus) are headed fast towards oversaturation. Much like how phone makers saw declines in sales over the past few years (when phones started to regularly be 1k plus) I fully expect for people to get burnt out of handhelds and "this one versus this one". At some point we just need to enjoy what we have, so we can play some damn games haha. But, I guess it's never bad to have options

The Ally is good, as is the Steam Deck and Legion Go, but you are giving up a lot for portability. For me, It's not worth it. And I say that as someone where cost isn't a factor. The overall performance, the amount of tweaking that has to be done is more than I want to be doing. So, for me, I'm likely to get a new laptop and sell the old Ally. I was hopeful that the XG gpus would come down in price, but now with ASUS seemingly moving away from that I don't see how I can get more out of my Ally without spending way too much for the XG. That zotac one looks great minus the screen only 7in and them being too late and not just waiting on 3.5, if this those dials can control tdp and fan speed that would be amazing. I really like the what xpg is doing but it’s ugly af and I think only 7” too. What I really want is pretty much the oxp x1 mini with the new chip but made by a company with better support. In conclusion 😂 my dream handheld would be a 8” plus screen (oled even better), detachable controllers and keyboard attachment and camm2 (or at least a sodimm slot) and at least a 65wh battery, wide kickstand and those zotac dials would be nice too lol

  • @WinDeckTech

    Totally get the wanting a oxp without the onex lmfao. 100% I'm totally stoked for the dials on the zotac, it's one of those things that seems like a simple idea/thought* but will be a gamechanger. I'd be surprised if we couldn't control all dial type functions on the device (brightness, volume, tdp) im sure there will be other uses for sure. But this will be the kick off of the copycat era haha, if others don't start doing stuff like that, they are at a big disadvantage. Xpg looks ugly AF but also looks super comfy haha.. also, am I the only one that thinks thr zotac looks a bit like a batwing? *edit typo

  • @WuFluChan
    @WuFluChan5 күн бұрын

    @@WinDeckTechlol I actually love the batwing look of the zotac I was really excited for it but I was needing something I could use as a tablet and little laptop so I bought a used oxp2 since they are pretty cheap, wasn’t planning on using it for any gaming but once I used that 8.4in screen I just can’t play on my ally anymore even though it’s more powerful. Maybe I would be fine with a 16:10 7in but 16:9 7in is just to small and that’s even with booting into playnite and never messing with windows

    @@WinDeckTechyeah I’m just glad to actually have a time frame now. The x1 mini does meet the criteria for pretty much everything I want from a handheld so if nothing else better comes along I just might go for it. I personally don’t mind getting my updates from pinned discord comments lol but at these prices that’s just unacceptable and to expect that from the average user is crazy. I mean if you can’t spend a day making a better update page atleast make the updates available on Reddit too lol

    I doubt they gonna use the actual 880 or 890m chip the reason why they modify 780m to Z1 is to reduce cost!!! If they don't modify it then prepare for $1000 Handheld together with those UNecessary features like OLED screen!!! I'm just gonna buy Gaming Loptop or Build a Gaming PC than a $1000 Handheld

    I personally would enjoy a more slimline Lego as well. Portrait based 8 inch screen. I'm in the hardly ever use fps mode camp. Unfortunately the rumours/leaks from Legion Go and it's next model are going to be more of a lite version than a proper iteration.

    @@WinDeckTech Yeah I have the Legion Go as well and its screen is nice and all, but in retrospect I would have definitely preferred a 16:9 format and VRR. VRR is a HUGE factor in such a device and even at high framtes the Legion Go never truly feels smooth. Even at 60+ frames its choppy. Especially for someone like me, who has a VRR QD-OLED and is used to the buttery smooth motion it delivers. VRR is not just helpful for lower framerates. Thats the big misconception.

    Using multiple layers of copper with thermal paste in between each is a terrible idea. Thermal past doesn't actually transfer heat well, it's just alot better than the voids of air that would be present between the cooler base and the CPU heat spreader. If the height of the cooler plate was wrong it's trash, it's not even worth doing a review cuz the product may otherwise be good if fixed, it will never be good like this.

    No and that was the point if this video. It "can" work but it was fubar from the beginning by design. Apparently V2 is better although I've not gotten around to testing it yet. Still sitting in it's box. The one thing that I will say is a "plus" of the monblock is that it does indeed cause the fans to not as high of an RPM howver the flip side of that is the monoblock itself gets quite warm from the heat spread. I'm going to be working on an all backplate test for the ally then revisit the steam deck with the v2 to see if there were any improvements or, if even possible, more regressions haha. Thank you for your input and insight. I'm also going to be getting some thermal putty just to see if there is a major difference one way pr the other with that.
