AsianBossGirl

AsianBossGirl

Welcome to our KZread Channel! ;)

A podcast for the modern day Asian American woman hosted by Melody Cheng, Helen Wu, and Janet Wang.

We started this podcast as an outlet for topics we are interested in, and for sharing stories we have as 20-30 something yr. old Asian American women working, dating, and living in Los Angeles.

It's no secret that Asian women are lacking in almost all media outlets. As three women working in finance, technology, and media who balance careers, life aspirations, and eventful social lives (we have our fair share of 5am returns from the club), we hope our perspectives can help, inform, and entertain those girls (and guys) with similar backgrounds or an interest in our backgrounds.

We like to think of this as our invitation for you to join our once private girl talk sessions! So grab a glass of wine and let's get this show started ;)

This episode was so relatable! My older sister and I used to fight allll the time, until we didn’t live together anymore and now we FaceTime almost every day hahah. Vs my little sister and I, I feel like I have to protect her or shield her from things. But at the same time, you’re right about being mean to them than how you would be with friends lol

Wow. As someone who did Mech Engineering in school and also worked in food services and now pursuing a first KZread channel, hearing Steven's backstory was super inspiring 🙌 Been watching him for forever but never knew his history! Thank you ABG for fleshing out so many great creators in this space.

I miscarriage a month ago as well. I feel you, I feel the pain but yet hope in a way. I wish though I had my husband with me when I delivered my baby at 8weeks but he was at work. It was one of the painful things to experience. Thank you for sharing and showing me how strong we can be after this. It gives me hope for the future. It’s hard still for me to speak up about it but knowing that I’m not the only one who experienced this makes me feel less alone in a way. Thank you again for sharing

My sister and I have a similar dynamic. I'm the eldest sibling, so I was very focused on academics, finishing university, and finding a job afterwards to help support my family.

i feel like the difference between sisters and friends is the fact that you have that family tie where even if you have rough periods at the end of the day they're still family and will be there for you because of that. with friendships there isn't family bond to tie you together so it doesn't feel as ok to show certain sides of yourselves. personally i feel like it's ok if there's that distinction between friends and sisters because it doesn't mean that friends are any less important and i also think it's important to have certain boundaries as well

Sisters are the best. I’m a brother to three sisters. My oldest sister pretty much raised me. My younger sister and I used to be inseparable. My youngest sister is a firecracker in the best ways.

My sister and I are 5 years apart. We were close all our lives and it came to a stop during the pandemic 2020 until now mid 2024. Our relationship is still on the mend but it’s helpful to hear that closeness can really vary from age to age.

Tbh I would go to a classical concert by myself. To a rock concert …probably not. Seems risky to go alone when everyone’s in groups, drinking and rowdy and then to leave late at night. I don’t know.

Good conversation. Having siblings, brings out different individual growth depending on whether the siblings are same or opposite sex. It depends on individual development, order, parent's role in life, economics, which compared to individuals growing up as a single child. You never know what you don't experience in personality development by having others or not.

Aussie ABG here! Just wanted to kindly tell you how to say “Bondi”, in your ad about Ouai, it was mispronounced. The pronunciation is - “Bond- die” Bond as in James Bond, Die as in die (death). :)

The first time I ever moved out of my parents’ house was with my boyfriend. He had already been living with roommates, so he knew what it was like to be on his own for the most part. We bought a house together, and though it was such an adjustment for me financially, we learned to communicate so well with each other and it’s been the best living with him! I get to live with my best friend and boyfriend all under one roof!

hi, older gen z here LOL for the sensitivity thing, i think being labeled as "sensitive" doesn't always have to have a negative connotation to it, and yes empathetic might be a better word for it in some situations. but i think sometimes people take it way too far and, unless you have an actual developmental/mental condition or something similar, there are some situations where you just have to tough it out and do what you need to do. it's important to know the nuances and strive for balance in each situation as well. for the PA school example, i agree with mel about how if it's not broken, don't fix it. unless there's a glaring issue, then you just have to do what you need to do and not complain so much (or just vent/complain to yourself, not directly to the professor lol). from my knowledge, PA school is difficult, and it's probably that difficult to try and prepare you for your future career

It's great to hear that Ashley found peace in hanging out with herself while in Taiwan. But is that something that will revert back after returning to the US? Asian countries like Japan and Taiwan foster a type of culture that pushes people to do things on their own and be independent from a very young age. It is must more normalized there. However, unfortunately, America doesn't really have that same culture. When people go out by themselves in the US, they call it "a date with myself for the day." In other countries, it's just a normal Saturday.

Would love to get an episode on finances - how your upbringing shaped your perception around $, how your relationship with $ has changed over the years, the process of self-sustaining through self-employment income, sharing/splitting finances with S.Os at different stages of the relationship, how you're planning for the future/retirement, do you talk about finances with friends, gift-giving and spending $ on friends' weddings, your worst financial mistakes, best financial tips, etc.

I enjoyed this ep so much!! Thank you!! This is so relatable and couldn’t help but giggle the whole time watching this. Thanks for keeping it real! Rey, we don’t hate you. You’re simply being OC at times, like what Janet said, learning to compromise is also KEY to a lasting relationship with our SO’s.

Wow.... well that was something I don't think I could have done when I was your age. When I was dating I don't know If I could ever get that deep into my own feelings let alone discuss it with an ex. I tip my hat to you Wes... and also Janet for that matter. Good luck to the both of you. I wish you both happiness and joy. (Kinda weird saying to a couple who aren't together but not separate either.)
