    How did you save your orchids in this heat wave? All of mine died.

  • @MyOrchidWorld
    @MyOrchidWorld20 күн бұрын

    The heat wave did cause stress to my orchids. I watered them daily twice and sometimes thrice. During the hot days I kept humidity trays for all orchids. For vandas I kept humidity containers for multiple orchids. And most importantly it has been raining heavily since 1st week of June. So it has been a relief. I store rain water in buckets and use them for my orchids.

    I got a aerides rosea in the jungle, I want to plant it on my drumstic tree, but afraid of monsoon is starting now, so will I plant it under home or what should I do, I am confused. Please guide me .

  • @MyOrchidWorld
    @MyOrchidWorldАй бұрын

    Drumstick is a softwood tree which might break. It is better you mount it on any wood piece or pot it. Aerides rosea is a tropical orchid. Monsoon rains are in fact very beneficial for it. My rosea is kept in my shade house where it gets soaked in rain and also gets afternoon sun. It never gets sunburns.

  • @MyOrchidWorld

    Watering can be done by soaking the entire orchid in water. Species orchids donot need fertilizer. If hybrid orchids are mounted, they can be fertilized either by spraying or soaking the orchid in fertilizer solution.

    Very pretty. I have a lot of black ants on my orchids . How to get rid of them? I washed the plant thoroughly freshly repotted, still the ants don't go away

  • @MyOrchidWorld
    @MyOrchidWorld2 ай бұрын

    It's absolutely normal for ants to make colonies in orchid pots.Even I had this problem. I tried washing and soaking the pots in water. It quite solved my problem. Even repotting doesn't solve the problem. The ants will go away eventually,donot worry much. Keep the medium coarse by adding few pieces of charcoal or broken brick pieces. Ants usually make colonies in damp wood. If the medium contains bark pieces then these can attract ants.

    I bought two cattleya seedlings before 6 months. I could not see any new growth still. What should i do mam?

  • @MyOrchidWorld
    @MyOrchidWorld3 ай бұрын

    Orchids take some time to adjust to the new environment bcoz their previous environment was different where they were growing. It is normal for orchids to take time to adjust. Seedlings are more vulnerable. Since it's spring you will see new growth very soon. Keep watering them. Keep them in bright shade. Maintain humidity level with a humidity tray if it's less than 70% in your area. If possible grow them outside or try to collect rainwater and water orchids with it. I am sure your Cattleyas will grow well. Gud luck 👍

  • @MyOrchidWorld
    @MyOrchidWorld4 ай бұрын

    In dendrobiums like farmeri, new keikis usually grow from the base of the orchid. Basically , dendrobiums have a rhizome from where all canes arise. To propagate dendrobiums you can divide the plant where each division contains atleast three canes. Also you can make pieces of an old cane and place them in a moist and humid environment to produce keikis. Please checkout my video on propagating methods of dendrobium.

  • @MyOrchidWorld
    @MyOrchidWorld5 ай бұрын

    My area is has a tropical climate which is where orchids get their best conditions to grow. Mumbai has a tropical climate too but with lesser rainfall and very high temperatures during mid summer. Please try the below: 1) Keep the orchids in shade 2) When it is very hot - mist the orchids 3) Water them daily since rain is less than usual tropical areas 4) Fertilize regularly during summer and winter Some orchids you can grow in your climate: 1) Cattleyas 2) Dendrobiums 3) Vandas 4) Phalaenopsis

    Oncidiums need bright shaded sunlight and moderate humidity. Water them when media is almost dry. If oncidiums donot get enough light they may not bloom. Check the colour of the leaves. If they are dark green, may be you need to shift them to a more lighted area. Keep them safe from direct sunlight always.

  • @MyOrchidWorld
    @MyOrchidWorld6 ай бұрын

    Plumeria is a small tree which doesn't develop very hard wood. Therefore during storms the branches break. So it is not an excellent choice to mount orchids although you can do it. No problem in that. Also the plumeria doesn't grow very tall and hence your orchid mounted on the plumeria might become food for some animal.

  • @MyOrchidWorld

    Hi Sunita, different orchids mature at different periods. Both hybrid and species dendrobium orchids generally mature within one year. Vandas take 5 to 6 years to mature and bloom. Hence my favourites are dendrobiums. You can buy species orchids online. There are quite a few online orchid nurseries. I generally buy from Tree of Life from Kerala.

  • @MyOrchidWorld
    @MyOrchidWorld6 ай бұрын

    Hi Diane, glad to know my video helped. The dendrobium aphyllum is a pendulous orchid meaning its canes and blooms hang in the air. Hence they grow best when mounted either on a tree branch or a piece of wood or cork or even a piece of styrofoam. Since your aphyllum is potted, allow its roots to grow freely with minimal media. This orchid is drought tolerant which means it can go days without water. During summer, it needs bright filtered light with medium water and high humidity. During winter it undergoes rest and during this time watering and fertilization should be completely stopped to ensure blooms in early spring.

  • @MyOrchidWorld

    When a keiki is atleast 7 to 8 cm tall with a nice bunch of roots you can remove it from the mother plant and pot seperately. You can also let the keiki remain with the mother plant.
