While all of us may not have trees to mount our orchids, we do have other alternative options.
In this video we talk about mounting orchids on wood, plastic slabs, coconut skin and even thermocol.
Wood : To mount an orchid on a wood slab, we can take any piece of wood which we find around. Like a piece from the carpenpter, from unused old furniture, from recent construction work, or even a broken or cut branch of any tree. Some of you might even get hold of driftwood which is a very good option. Clean the piece of wood before mounting the orchid. The wood piece should be preferably of the same size as the orchid.
Plastic slab : Any plastic slab can also be used to mount orchids although this is a bit uncommonly found material. Usually we need to buy plastic slabs which have multiple holes for the orchid roots to move around.
Coconut Skin : This is a very common method of mounting orchids in many places. The skin of the cocnut can be used to mount orchids. Here you donot need to add any media since the fibre will act as media. Once watered the fibre will remain wet for two to three days and we dont need to water it on a daily basis. The fibre degrades faster than sphagnum moss but does last atleast a year.
Thermocol : Orchids can also be mounted on thermocol which is very easy to procure. It comes with packages and we just need to cut the thermocol to the right size and shape and we can mount our orchid onto it. The advantage of thermocol is that it doesnt degrade and can last years.
Apart from these materials we can also use broken earthen pots or even special shaped earthen ware to mount orchids.
Just make sure that if you are mounting orchids onto any of these materials it should be permament. The roots once they establish on the material will be disturbed if you try to remove the orchid from the material.

Drumstick is a softwood tree which might break. It is better you mount it on any wood piece or pot it. Aerides rosea is a tropical orchid. Monsoon rains are in fact very beneficial for it. My rosea is kept in my shade house where it gets soaked in rain and also gets afternoon sun. It never gets sunburns.

Direct morning sunlight is beneficial for orchids. Some species orchids can tolerate direct afternoon sun but they do get sunburns on their leaves. So it is gud to protect them from direct afternoon sun

What about water? And any fertilizers?

Watering can be done by soaking the entire orchid in water. Species orchids donot need fertilizer. If hybrid orchids are mounted, they can be fertilized either by spraying or soaking the orchid in fertilizer solution.
