HeavyBassRig

HeavyBassRig's Home Page is a place to check out bass and guitar covers of songs from the 80's all the way through some of today's current hits. I play mostly hard or alternative rock, but you never know what other genres may pop up from time to time. I will also begin reviewing some gear, particularly as it pertains to the bass guitar as I haven't been able to find many bass friendly gear reviews on here. Thanks for checking out my page!

Very late comment, but I love Ernie Ball, and just recently thought about trying the Cobalts. I’m sold. Thanks. 🙏🏻

In the end I bought a stomp box. The Wazinator Baby Grand. It produces a sound better than anything I or others could actually make too. Its worth the money. SImple as that. Through a nice amp it has got the more beautiful and realistic kick sound.

Honestly, I really like the sound cobalt strings make, but given that I'm on a bit of a budget right now, it might not be the best idea to aim for them yet. Nickel strings have always produced a good sound in my opinion, especially with guitar, it just sounds a lot brighter, so I may just end up going with nickel. Mostly planning on changing my strings out since I intend to polish the frets and lower their height ever so slightly to combat string buzz, especially around frets 1-10, and on the off chance that doesn't work, I can always adjust the truss rod or the action on the bridge if need be.

The magnetic pickup idea is good and I like the fact the top end of the sound remains. I still feel the piezo pickup concept works best though.

I wonder if you could chuck it through an EQ pedal though to shape the sound. The signal output would be perfect of that.

Man, that bass could replace a guitar in basically any hard rock band. That's a winner combo with the cobalts there.

Good man! Trying them out on a Jazz 5, exactly what I'm interested in. I've since moved on to Elixir Nanoweb stainless mediums but I have always had a soft spot for Slinks. The Slinkies might be "relatively" fresh, but any time spent on them is the main reason why the brand new Cobalts are popping out so much. They sound freakin EXCELLENT, however.

Personally I like the lower end better on the regular slinky’s like the E and A strings and the D and G sounded better with the cobalts so I think I’ll run a hybrid of the two

Well, your problem is, you're trying to play two notes at the same time through a monophonic pedal, so it's not that the pedal doesn't know what to do, it's you who don't know what to do.

I always used the ernie ball regular slinky strings and I played bass since 92 . the only other brand of strings I tried out was the GHS bass boomers because one time back in the mid 90s gene simmons was promoting the GHS bass boomers . so me being a fan of kiss decided to try them out and they were ok . they didnt seem to hold up in tone as the ernie ball regular slinky strings do . I never tried flatwound strings either but I dont think I would like flatwound because they dont have that bright tone that roundwound strings have . but I will for sure try out the ernie ball cobalt strings next . I've nothing but good things about the cobalts so I'll give them a shot

In the video, because you are using such a small amp, it’s not perceptible if you’re using the 5th feature or just the octave. Plus, one mistake everyone seems to do, is play finger style and expect the octave sound like a “power chord”.

So while this is a good review and it's obvious that the cobalts are "noisier" you are playing pronounced clean lines, like Longview. These are going to better for metal where the is much more sound to cut through. TBH they seem awful to practice with and too shrill in overtones. However if you aren't finding good ballance in a distortion based sound they may be ideal.

I knew every single but one of these bass lines, and I’m a guitar player just starting out on bass. 1.Longview 2.RHCP ? 3.Californication 4. Comedown Sounds crazy similar to “Aeroplane” but the progression wouldn’t be in the correct sequence.

Appreciate the review, I think everyone's missing the point of this pedal, it plays a guitar chord for every note you hit. If you want to play something all over the neck just get a rhythm guitarist, you play a riff starting in f# and it includes a hammer on/off riff and then a 2 note chord, could you imagine trying to play the exact riff but every note is a chord? So why expect the pedal to do so? If you play chord progression type notes on the low e and a strings then it works just fine(add a distortion pedal before the amp) but if you're trying to play something like a greenday song this pedal doesn't make sence to use. I find an octave pedal works better for the more complex playing

These things are great for straight single note bass lines. Any one in their right might would know that you cannot play 2 notes simultaneously with this pedal. This pedal is not designed for that. It's designed to give you an octave up & a fifth to your single root note to create a power chord. It's a great pedal if you know how to use it. Also... Do yourself a favor & run an equalizer on the effects side. This will smooth the sound out & give you a nice warm distortion in place of that tinny sound you're getting out of that guitar amp.
