Fair Winds RV

Looking for content curated for the everyday RV'er? Then welcome aboard! Hi everyone! We are Jeremy & Candice (and our dog Wicket). In 2021 we sold our home and nearly everything we owned. While we loved our house and the location, we knew we didn't want to live there long-term. We'd always imagined traveling the country in an RV, so we decided the time was right and bought a 2016 Grand Design 375RE and a big truck to pull it with. We finally hit the road in July of 2022 and are truly living the journey and enjoying every minute.

From our KZread channel, we'll be sharing our journey with you as we travel the country, both the good and the not so good, and hope to provide some great RV tips and tricks, dos and don'ts, and valuable lessons we've learned along the way. We truly want to focus on sharing experiences that everyone can benefit from, whether you're a weekender, traveling full time, or stationary.

We're excited to share our journey with everyone!

    That's a downside to this setup. When using the double voltage hub to provide that split phase 240 output voltage, you're not able to charge from a 120V outlet. You can plug both units in, but they won't charge if they're connected to the double voltage hub.

    This is great info. We also use RVLife for planning. I agree, when I get up in the morning, I want to know where I will be sleeping that night. I have been called an 'uber planner' and I'm OK with that. We also try to use Thousand Trails/Encore parks as much as possible. We stayed 90 nights in TT last summer and will have about 50 nights this season. That saves us thousands every year. As for activities, we use our grocery list app, Our Groceries. We will add a list by city and add attractions there. Also, Google Keep works well for that application.

    Have had snap pads since day 1 and no regrets, we use them with the gray stromberg Carlson blocks since the wife and I both disliked the red appearance of the Anderson versions. We also have Anderson levelers and to this day we don’t know why lol! Have never needed them on 10k miles of traveling so far. Auto level has been great I guess. You mentioned a way to manage the destinations and places to go while at certain ones all I can say is our first full year was go go go and we had a blast but never had an opportunity to see all the additional attractions and features of the areas we visited so this year we are trying camp hosting with the US Forest Service and it has been fantastic so far. The commitment is seasonal and we are in a highly desirable location and have a small and manageable camp ground and 4 months to get in all the exploring of the area as we see fit. I don’t know that we will do this continuously but it will be an option in the future if we are trying to spend significant time in a top five location for seasonal activities. You can join workamper.com or do like we did and just create an account on volunteer.gov and find out what is available in an area you would like to spend a season in. Options in every state are available to include Hawaii and Alaska. Compensation is very low but the FHU site and consistency of time off and laid back atmosphere of a Forest Service Campground can’t be beat! Just a thought.

  • @fairwindsrv
    @fairwindsrv6 күн бұрын

    Thanks for another positive recommendation on federal park camp hosting! We've heard nothing but good things so far on state and federal parks and think we'll give it a try at some point. Since we aren't looking for full-time jobs with pay, the FHU compensation is enough for us.

    Always interesting to see how other 390s are completed. Ours has a traditional p-trap under the kitchen sink but we do have that exact valve you have on our wash machine drain tube. I wonder what the thought process is for these units or is it based on material availability? Glad you got it sorted out! Clogs are never fun… I have had some Starlink issues also but most of my issues are self inflicted due to current location that involved splicing cat6 into the Starlink cable to get out to 225 feet as I have lodgepole pines everywhere around our rig currently. Starlink uses power over internet for the dish so as much as there cable looks like traditional cat5 or 6 it definitely wants to be uniform. It works most of the time for us but it seems like once a day I will get the modem to shutdown and not self boot so I have to unplug it and wait 30 second and plug it back in to resolve the issue. I assume this is related to the dish drawing power for its periodic orientation adjustments though I don’t know that for certain and at this point it is a mild inconvenience all things considered. Have had Starlink for about 2 years now and this is the first time we have had this much obstruction so I am looking forward to getting out of our current location in September and back to more open areas.

  • @fairwindsrv

    Yes...lots of differences even between same model years. We have friends with the same rig (same year) and there are a ton of differences.

  • @fairwindsrv
    @fairwindsrv14 күн бұрын

    From what we've heard, GD makes slight model changes as needed based on things like customer input. Some friends bought a 2024 390 and picked it up in September and there are some fairly noticable differences to ours that was picked up in December (kitchen sink, fridge, dog dish in the island, bedside shelves). It is kind of frustrating, though, since you can't guarantee that all models in a specific year have the same equipment for troubleshooting.

    If you have gen 2 Starlink like us a somewhat recent update is that it now allows you to remove auto tilt and make the dish point straight to the sky after it has setup. Has been huge for us currently as we are hosting a forest service CG outside of Yellowstone and the lodgepole pines are obstructing us heavily but when it looks straight up our speeds are reduced a bit but we have no drops and no outages. Just finished watching this episode. Good video. The 10" Garmin is way to big for a truck dashboard. When I was shopping for ours I learned that the 10" is meant for motorhomes. We have the Garmin 890 and it works well size-wise on our dashboard. Did you get to use your water bladder yet? We have a 60gal bladder and have used it a couple of times. Worked out well for us but I didn't have to go far to fill it up. Not very fast to fill the tank using the pump though.

Other than that, we haven't needed it yet. 80 gallons goes a long way if you're mindful of what you're using.

    Since this video, have you added any extra solar panels to your system? Also, how well is the ecoflow system running your entire rv?

  • @fairwindsrv
    @fairwindsrvАй бұрын

    When this video was released, all we had was one 330-watt panel on the roof and two 400-watt portable panels. Since then, we purchased two 400-watt rigid, mountable panels from EcoFlow and sold the portable panels. There was nothing wrong with the portable panels...I just wanted them permanently mounted. So, we now have three panels on the roof. (1) 330-watt and (2) 400-watt. The 330-watt panel feeds one set Delta Pro and extra battery, and the (2) 400-watt panels feed the other set. So far, the most we've gone without shore power is 4 days, with two of those days being almost no sunshine. I had to break out the generator on the last day and charge for about 4 hours. We somewhat conserved energy, but we still used everything we normally use...microwave, coffee maker, even the furnace for a couple of nights. The only thing we didn't use was the A/C because we didn't need it. Overall, the EcoFlow system has worked out great. I think if we really conserved energy, we could easily go a week or more without needing to recharge. We could go indefinitely if we have good sunshine and as long as we don't need to run the AC. We're still happy we went with the EcoFlow system instead of the traditional solar install.

    QUESTION: I have a similar setup, just one EF Delta Pro + Extra battery, and an Onan 6000QD as comes standard with the Class A Tiffin Allegro. How would you suggest using the Onan to charge the Ecoflow most efficiently? I'm pretty sure that plugging the EFDP into an inverted 110AC outlet is not efficient, nor is the cigarette lighter adapter. I'm considering the alternator charging device for when I'm traveling and I only have (1) 200 watt solar panel mounted on the roof right now. I've purchased every combination of XT60i and XT60 Y adapters, MC4 connections, Anderson plugs, 7909 barrel connectors, etc. The idea there is to be able to have 2 sources of charging going into the EFDP charging port. Just wondering how I can get the most from the Onan. Thanks for all of your videos.

    Hmm...Why do you say it wouldn't be efficient to plug the DP into an inverted 120V outlet? That's exactly what I do if I need to charge them via an AC source when boondocking. That Onan 6000 should easily be able to charge the DP at its max AC charging rate and still have plenty of overhead for just about everything else you would want to run on it. I like the idea of the alternator charger, but it's just not really feasible in my specific case. However, it might be a good alternative charging source in your class A. Something to keep on mind (and it's something I'll be putting out as an update soon) is that if you plan to run this thru a MTS, make sure you disconnect the DP output from the MTS BEFORE charging via any AC input. Otherwise, you can create a potentially dangerous ground loop. Below are a couple of really good articles on all of this, plus an alternative way to charge via AC. www.linspyre.com/ecokevin/smps.html www.linspyre.com/ecopower/powerhomecircuits.html

    @@fairwindsrv I guess I have been watching too many YT videos and somewhere I got it in my head that it was inefficient when converting AC-DC-AC and to mix into that the onboard inverter which I believe is a PD 1000 watts. I don't plan on connecting the DP to a transfer switch or adding much more to the system. I have rigged up a pass through hatch through a window to put my 50 amp shore power cord through to the inside where I will plug into the 30 amp dog bone and directly into the 30 amp plug on the DP. I also got the EV adapter to experiment with at a gas station. I can hang out for 2 hours at a WaWa with all the Tesla owners(LOL). BTW, I did also get the ground/neutral bonding adapter from Ecoflow directly. My intentions were to keep it safe and simple but then you find yourself wanting more power, faster. That's when things start to get complicated and dangerous.......and expensive. I appreciate your reply and the link and look forward to your updates and future videos.
