    Had these fitted by window people and now the side where the restrictor is, is not allowing the window to seal on the side of the restrictor.

    Go for it if you're 100% certain you're going to drill it straight. And 100% certain there isn't something in the centre of the window profile that's going to send the drill bit off course. You might be lucky and not hit anything with a small drill bit, but a big drill bit it is so easy for it to go off course.

    Do you have any tips for maintaining or restoring old PVC windows? I just bought a house with old windows, but I won't be able to replace them for a while. Anything I can do to refresh their appearance or function so I can get a few more years from them?

    5:51 Just looking at this, why not just take the bottom seal off like your doing now and proceed from there as the paint scraper is protecting the glazing whilst drilling?. What was the point of taking away all the seals and glazing beads and replacing them straight away and then putting the handle on with the glazing window in place?. Even though you are advocating to change the handle with the glazing off you are doing it with the glazing in as I can see the reflection. Im just a but puggled. I have an aluminum kitchen top window just like this only 3 times the size with the same rivits. You wouldnt be up in North Dublin at any point or know anyone in Dublin that could come out and do this?.

  • @PaddysDiy
    @PaddysDiy6 күн бұрын

    It just to show that's how you would remove the glass or doubke glazing to change the handle. In some windows the space left is too small to remove the rivets without breaking the glass. But the window in this video is wide enough that it can be done without fear of breaking the glass. But for someone that doesn't have experience i would recommend removing the glass or doubke glazing. I don't go near dublin I'm afraid. Andy in the window repair company is located in north dublin.

    Good on you showing. Ive always had a hassle. I usually cut the flange with a sharp chisel. Then knock the nub through. Some nubs just wont budge. The sides are too compressed. Your method i like. Thanks for sharing.

    This problem will continue everywhere until the greedy manufacturers stop making them to fail, forcing you to buy new. The cause is obvious. The failures are on the hot sunny sides of the house. The units are made in a comfortable working temperature factory. When in the hot sun, the air expansion is massive, and will eventually blow out a weak spot in the glue. Then at night, there is a vacuum created and cold damp air is sucked in. After many repeats, the moisture condenses on the glass. There are two ways they can prevent this. One, is to glue the unit together in a hot chamber, so that later on, the unit is mostly under slight vacuum, pulling the glue together, rather than forcing it apart. The hot sun cannot create such a high pressure anymore. The other way is to put a tiny one-way check valve in the spacer, so that the first time the sun raises the temp and pressure, the valve releases the pressure, and from then on, most of the time there will be a slight vacuum, as described above.

    Thanks, really helpful. Got the handle off our widow then tried pulling rubber strip out as shown. Was struggling to get any purchase on rubber strip without damaging window frame. I then put screwdriver in hole where the barrel on the latch mechanism goes and turned. After a few goes the window opened! We now have fresh air coming in our bathroom in the current hot spell - it’s been like an oven in there recently!
