Wrong directing and wrong type casting. Hence wrong acting. He suppose to beg her with passion, with hope. And could not hold his bitterness upon refusal. Instead he looks like an old playboy, who really does not care. She is suppose to be idealistic out of this world woman, otherwise she would not married not so rich old man and kept fidelity to him. Instead here we have modern day businesswoman. Awful.

Brooke Smith and Julianne Moore have amazing chemistry here. I think they seem very natural in their roles as Sonya and Yelena, very nuanced. They play off one another very well. Their scenes together are my favorite.

A portrayal of an idyllic existence (except for the prejudice of anti-Semitism) that IMO, is the best family show ever. Topol should have won every award that year, in fact the whole cast should have been given a special award.

@filmfelineadmin You clearly have no understand of acting based in The Stanislavsky system or Chekhov's plays. Chekhov invented the concept of subtext and Uncle Vanya is the first play he implimented it in, being his first full length. Also this is a film. Vanya on 42nd street is a FILM about actors doing this play that it turns into it. I have a problem with people who have uneducated opinions.
