How about some info on the perch fishing at Crowley lake I used to go with my grandpa to Crowley when young his best friend Doug Butler lived and guided on Crowley lake for decades I remember filling up ice chests full of perch and then spending hours cleaning them all my brother and I would rather be doing something else but those times are the backbone of the teachings my grandfather taught us. From cleaning fish to being respectful the responsibilities of cleaning the boat ect. Cheers

Case G, Thanks for your comment. While the Podcasts are meant for general instruction, we'll try to put in some information on Perch. By the way, if you're planning to go up there, the perch are biting on the North side. I hear perch filets are very tasty. Good luck if you head to Crowley !

Put the split shot at the end and there won't be any slack. Problem solved. You'll also have less hangups, the nymph will be right in the trout's face, you'll know where bottom is and casting will be easier.

Sensei Rae, regional director for KJWA -USA teaching aikido and kyushojitsu in the Memphis area. I have some notes, and mean no disrespect as I understand you were probably just looking out for the safety of uke... The way I learned, and teach kokyunage usually involves the arm coming in at the assailant's neck. This is admittedly dangerous so, again, I can understand not putting that out there for people who may attempt these techniques at home without proper safety precautions, but it could be argued that in doing so we misrepresent the entire technique. Forgive me, but I have been on a mission lately to remind aikidoka that atemi waza (striking techniques) is said to account for 99% of aikido yet it seems no one is talking about it anymore. Kokyunage, when applied in combat, should target stomach 9, small intestine 17, triple warmer 16 using a knife hand, ridge hand, or forearm strike. Obviously that "strike" is done as more of a "push" in practice because we don't want to be knocking people out in class, but that doesn't mean we should omit it entirely from the lesson. When we fail to present this information we end up training generation after generation of students who become teachers who may never have learned practical aikido. Hence we get an overwhelming majority of the martial arts community insisting aikido is "useless" and "ineffective in a real fight" I think it is perfectly fine to teach aikido as an art for spiritual development, personal growth, or even just a means of introducing people to traditional Japanese culture... but I think responsibility also lies with the teacher to be honest about HOW they are teaching it, so that the prospective student can learn what they want to learn. I have encountered far too many people who feel they wasted years of their lives studying aikido without ever learning effective self defense because the teachers simply didn't teach it that way.

Sensei Rae - Thank you ,,, and you make excellent and well considered points. We both realize that Aikido has rules which promote safety on the mat just has MMA has rules against one form of Atemi (the eye gouge). My choice not to employ Atemi is based on my early training in Shin Shin Toitsu style with Tohei Sensei and the Ki Society, and is not meant to imply that I don't use Atemi (I do). The whole point of the kokyunage demonstration is to illustrate in the simplest way, the redirection of energy or force. This brings us to the basic philosophy of the art, which is not to maim or kill our opponent on the mat (we would have few ukes if we practiced that way). In my opinion, the physical concept of blending is a metaphor for the interpersonal concept of avoiding force on force interactions which focus on a winner and a loser to the conflict. If we are forced to get "wrapped up in the fur ball", then we have already failed in the "Art of Peace". In truth, if this attack was real, my "Atemi" would have been an eye gouge. Those who would say that Aikido is not practical are speaking the truth if their goal is to neutralize an attack by inflicting great harm on an individual. One of my mentors, the late Sensei Robert Koga of the Koga institute who has more "practical experience" than the majority of martial arts experts (including me) because of his actual experience on the streets of Los Angeles as an LAPD officer talks about the fact that on the street there are no rules. While not used by all police forces, the "Twist Lock Control" (sankyo) and the "Reverse Wrist Take Down" (kotegaeshi) are still important facets of police weaponless defense which hopes to gain control of an assailant without inflicting serious bodily harm. If there is anything that I have learned in my fifty-plus years of training, it is that I realize that I don't know as much as I'd like to and that I am always willing to learn. Thank you again for sharing your insights.

Awesome videos. I am very new to fly fishing. Gone less than 10 times since buying my own gear. I have been a die hard trout fisherman for years but always used spin gear. I think this is going to be the method I am going to focus on while learning as I mainly fish this small stream and it is really spotty. Do you think this is a good method for a beginner to learn?

Gary, Truly apologize, but as the videographer I had to play the hand I was dealt, which was a noisy room with multiple tiers tying at the same time. There were no opportunities to record either before or after the program was over (although I suggested it). I hope you can understand that this was the best that could be done in a chaotic situation.

  • @phoult37

The sighter will have a slight bend to it, but when a fish takes that creates tension and the line will straighten out. The whole system works because there is no floating indicator acting as an anchor.

James D. Swanson, Please stop calling yourself "ole timer" let alone calling him "son" We get it... you're old and he is younger. I am a firm believer in respecting your elders but you're just being rude and disrespectful. The beauty of fly fishing is that there is ALWAYS room for learning and improvement. The minute you think you know it all and that your technique is the best is the minute you plateaued. (which seems like a long time ago) One thing you said that was correct is that you are "no pro." He is a world champion class fly fisherman that has fished with some of the best fisherman in the world! By the age of 21 he was fishing with fisherman like Joe Humphreys! Was on the US fly fishing team for 7 years and was a back to back winner of the US National Championship. Coached the US youth team for 2 years. Placed top 5 in the World Championship. On top of being a successful guide on some of the best water on the east coast. His book "Dynamic Nymphing" is also a best seller. Needless to say people pay him to speak about his techniques and his experiences. Give the man the respect that he deserves and stop with your passive aggressive attitude. You think your explanations in your comments were clear and understood? Let alone you think people are gonna listen to you over George? You think George is gonna learn something he doesn't know from you? Besides... can't you see that this isn't even George's KZread account and that he will never see your comment? If all you wanted was for him to speak slower and more clearly that could of easily been said without your rant. Seem to me more like you want people to think that his technique is wrong and you have a better understanding of fly fishing and a better technique. How many times would you like to tell us that you been fishing for 60 years? or 59? or 30? Just because you have been doing something for a long period of time does not make you a expert or in a position to disrespect someone. He never said that he only uses tight line fishing. That's the whole point of his techniques "Dynamic Nymphing" Dynamic: adj - (of a process or system) characterized by constant change, activity, or progress. If you actually listened to what he had to say he clearly says that all techniques have their time and place. I think everyone else can hear him fine. You just didn't want to listen to what he had to say....
