I've always thought this was a travesty of justice. Little was known about microbursts and wind-shear at the time. You can't see it so how are you supposed to avoid it? Fortunately, this accident prompted research and technological development that has rendered air travel safer. It's just a tragedy that improvements like these have to be paid for in so much blood!

DFW TRACON now has in effect what I informally call the "Flight 191 Rule', to wit: If lightning is observed within !0 Miles of Love, DFW Meacham, Addison, Alliance, and others in the Metro area, arrivals are STOPPED for 30 min., and subsequent observations of lightning reset the 30 min. clock. This is part of why passengers hate DFW (missed connections, in-air delays, diverts) so much.

I was working at a flight simulator facility on the south end of DFW Airport the day of this crash. Our facility had large windows facing the runways so we could see aircraft landing and taking off during normal operations. On this day we quickly realized all landings and take offs had stopped so we walked outside to see what was happening. That is when we could see the fire and smoke from the crash site. A very sad day! As a side note, our flight simulators were the first to simulate, several months later, the wind shear that caused this accident. I'm a pilot and have flown the simulators using this wind shear model many times and it was very difficult to recover even knowing that I was going to encounter the wind shear. Great improvements have been made since the accident on identifying wind shears and training pilots to recover from wind shears.
