Clint Explains

Clint Explains

My name is Clint, and I love to learn! I also love to share what I learn with as many people as will listen. I have a PhD in Biology with research focused on science and biology education. I teach at a local university, but have increasingly shifted my focus to KZread because this is where we come to learn. I would love to learn with you and share as much as I can about the incredible natural world!

This video should be required viewing in schools from elementary on. The only thing I would add some stress to is the fact that evolution has no intent. In the English language, the word "adapt" can mean both intentional adaptation or unintentional adaptation. I think it is really important to stress the fact that in evolution, adaptation is not directed, it is a result of random changes in organisms, and random changes in environments. I think I would also add that plants evolve just as animals do, using DNA as the library of instructions. Anyhow, a great video!

I would just like to point out that cancer, while not least of smokers worries, is only one of those worries. Something that is tied very clearly to smoking is emphysema. Anyone who knows someone with emphysema knows what a horror that is. Breathing, but not getting enough oxygen. A slow death by drowning. There are many other conditions associated with smoking. The best time to quit smoking is right now. I know it is difficult, having smoked for near thirty years, but I know it can be done. The sooner the better.

There are a very small number of good sources for science information on You Tube. Clint's Reptiles, and Clint Explains are at the top of the list. While I am not a biology major, I have read almost every essay and book written by Stephen Jay Gould, and Richard Dawkins (as well as many other authors). So I felt I knew quite a bit about evolutionary biology. Yet Clint has taught me a lot. I have a much better understanding after watching Clint's videos. So, I thank you Clint for the effort you put into these videos, and commend you for the good work. You are a very important resource for people wishing to learn.

No, humans and chimps are like horses and zebras, different environmental settings trigger different genes to evolve, so chimps and humans had the same ancestor, while some went on to the grasslands to evolve into us, and others went into the jungle and evolved into chimps

Silly Creationist question: If Man is descended from apes why are apes still around? Because Man didn't descend from any of todays Apes . The primates that exist today including man share a common primate ancestor that existed millions of years ago.

when you say animals change sex, i can only think of clownfish. do they literally grow different sex organs and produce different egg cells or is it just that their cells divide and chromosomes get swapped out? what makes a crocodile male or female? when you say the temperature determines the sex, what does irreversible mean?

I lose the thread when we go from population to individuals. That is because, in my mind, there is additional genetic material from mating in the case of individuals and there is not additional genetic material in the populations, the genes mutate, form extra copies and so on but still derived from the same source. Now I can get moved around on this pretty easily but I think there are differences. I don't want to get hung up on the analogy as I think I get the point unless they are in fact the same argument then I am missing something.

@@louisesrensen5529 lead is a common metal however it forms from decomposing radioactive elements mainly uranium, it’s basically uranium that has lost all its radiation, radioactive elements have a constant and linear decomposition rate meaning no matter what you do it’s impossible to speed up or slow down decomposition and with microscopes and math you can see and calculate the decomposition rate. So you check the ratio of uranium to lead in fossils and rock layers and use math to calculate it to see how long it’s been underground.

A living fossil is a generic term. It is used to refer to organisms that have stayed more or less the same as their ancient ancestors. Goblin sharks, elephant sharks, and gars are examples of this. Coelacanths don't meet this criterion. they have a molecular evolutionary rate similar to that of most other jawed vertebrates.

How far behind are we really though? If you think about it determining all the lives and time loss. We're probably so far behind R. Ancestors are probably like thinking. We're ahead, but realistically. We're actually really far behind😅
