Is the line "far from my far-reaching gaze" or "far from my fatherly gaze"? I distinctly heard Hugh sing the first one here, but I swear I have piano scores that list it as the second... hmm

I gotta say.... This is the first Wandering Child I've ever heard that was basically a Phantom solo... Raoul is straight up not here, Hugh Panaro is absolutely overpowering Christine... Hugh's amazing here, so I can't say that I'm complaining.

Hugh is pretty good. The one critique I have of the Broadway production as a whole is that they are sissies. Just catch her for goodness sake. It totally ruins it when you see him just let her fall to the floor. Yes, the actor may eventually get back issues. The West End still catches Christine and it is more beautiful. It shows his love for her. The Broadway "just let her fall" makes him look uncaring. IMO

I actually disagree. To me the question arises: "How many interactions does he have with women?" To me, it looks more like he doesn't know what to do. His physical interactions with her thus far have been minimal and gentle (the tiniest bit intimate at the most), so not catching her makes sense. It's almost a fear of "how do I touch this being whom I worship and love so much?" Another Phantom who portrays that really well is Ivan Ozhogin from the Moscow cast. I also don't think the Phantom expected that kind of reaction. I mean, how was he supposed to know you shouldn't show her a wedding dress on a mannequin that looks just like her on the first date?

EXACTLY! I always saw that as not only something one just has to do as a gentleman, but really weird when Erik lets his true love fall to the cobblestone floor of his lair. Imagine if she straight up died.

It’s not the productions fault - Equity, for whom all actors work under (think their union), would’t allow that part in the music to occur - to prevent injuries. They also cut Raoul jumping from the bridge into the trap door at the stage level eventually, near the end. Damn EQUITY !! ! !

Yes but only on the studio recording and even there there is some effect on the note (which is probably not because it was necessary but because it was considered to sound nice). This is a live-recording, though, and I've never seen another singer (not even Elaine) who held the note as long and as strong as Karin does.

Probably my favorite part of the entire play, I love it so much. This is such a moving performance, they are all so amazing! The phantoms taunting, sadistic change on it is so.. it's just so cool. Christine's heartbreak, despiration. She gives such a moving performance. Between that helplessness and the pained taunting, it's just so amazing.

The way he holds the word "sing" at 8:36-8:43, and his hand gesture demonstrating it, is so utterly beautiful, my heart can't take it. I seriously would have gasped if I were sitting in that audience. That third ghostly "Christine" that the Phantom adds after Raoul's first two, at 2:47 is so absolutely haunting and perfect. It reminds me so much of Michael Crawford. Hugh is perfect in the role with his elements of classic Crawford, mixed in with his own interpretation and unbelievable voice.

I just have to add his crescendo into rage starting with his growl at 9:18 is one of the scariest I have heard. The way he punctuates the end of each word in a growl, and especially the length and strength with which he holds the word "you" is absolutely chilling.

His haaands. Hugh, as the Phantom, has this distinctive way of kind of throwing his head back to emphasize certain phrases as he sings. It's kind of a mix of authoritative, and cocky/haughty. It really adds to his elegant, passionate performances, IMO. I love how the black cloak can't hide this mannerism at 2:32 and especially 2:34 . :)The fierceness/determination in his voice as he grabs her after she discovers it's him starting at 5:24 is goose-bump inducing. Especially the way he growls "returrrrn-uh" at 5:29 . Just the most amazing Phantom there ever was, or will be.
