    As owners of an other Najad 390 we also have big steeringwheel thats annoying to get past. We considered the folding wheel but in the end doubted if it would make enough of a difference. So I'd be happy to hear your experiences in real live with the folding wheel. We also have a watertank meter that's not working. I haven't gotten arround to opening the floor yet, but will do so soon. Happy to know where to look for it 🙂Since we most probably have the same model I'd like to ask you where you ordered your replacement. I hope you enjoy the boat as much as we do. We simply love her.

    With regard to the instrument gauge your going to move from the rear cabin, couldn’t you instead leave it there and buy another gauge to put at the nav station that will plug in to the existing loom, then you can check what’s going on when underway while resting

  • @Westsail28
    @Westsail28Ай бұрын

    Yes, that would be possible and might be simpler. The repeater gives only speed, depth and distance. It's really not of much value in the aft stateroom. But we do enter those numbers in our log at the nav station several times a day.

    I´m watching your channel since its beginning. Even though I´m a bit dissapointed that you didn´t upgrade to a Westsail 32, I´m very very grateful to find your peaceful content during the hours ahead of the Trump/Biden debate:) Anyways... your quality content is always nice to watch and especially your soothing voice is great. The Najad choice of yours is very understandable for me though, becaus she really is roomy and slick loocking at the same time, combined with a very high built quality. BR from Germany, Tobias PS: What was your job before you retired? Everything you do is so thoroughly thought through and made in such a quality manner, I wonder why that is:)

    Thank you for the kind comments. Our Westsail 28 "Starwhite" is still a big part of our lives. We are currently home sailing her on the Salish Sea. The Najad is moored in the Schengen area so our time aboard is limited by those regulations. We purchased the Najad as we wanted a boat with 2 staterooms that we could keep in a warmer climate. Winters in Seattle are normally grey, wet and cold so it's nice to get away... We considered the Westsail 43 & 42, but their overall length made handling and moorage a challenge. I have worked in several different aspects of the recreational marine industry for the past 45 years.

    When you can't get an anchor to hold, attach your spare anchor and chain rode in front of it so you have 2 picks in line with a chain rode between them.

  • @todddunn945
    @todddunn945Ай бұрын

    Back when I learned how to anchor the rule was 7:1 scope for a rope chain rode with one boat length of chain and 4:1 scope for all chain rode. Different anchors work best in different bottoms. The Danforth is the anchor of choice for anchoring in soft mud. Plow type anchors )CQR, Delta, etc are good in and and harder mud and will alo work on a rocky bottom. Do remember that scope is determined at high tide in tidal waters. I had a delta anchor on my vintage wooden powerboat because it was self launching and set well in our local bottoms. On my Allied Princess 36 I use a Danforth Plow which is the Danforth version of the CQR. I also have a Danforth 20H as my backup anchor. I also use an effectively all chain rode (250' of 3/8" G4 chain, but I do have 250 feet of 5/8" three strand spliced onto the end of the chain. I think you should also have mentioned anchor snubbers since they are essential with an all chain rode. Just another old sailor. I am from Washington, bt now sail in Maine. I used to sail Puget Sound and the San Juans. I will check out your videos to see where you do most of your sailing.

    Do you happen to have a wiring diagram for your setup? I am currently working on rewiring age old electrical work myself on a Westsail 32. I have the AC and DC mostly figured out, but I am trying to sort out how you wired the charger into this system. I like the idea of the AC source installed right by the charger. I'm asking because it seems your batteries were wired one way in another video on the engine compartment (Video #44, 2:12 has the starter wired to the house bank) and here, the starter is wired different @2:32. If the Victron unit comes with an installation diagram, then I can refer to that. Always admiring your restoration work! Thanks!

  • @Westsail28
    @Westsail28Ай бұрын

    WOW, you have spent a lot of time studying my videos! I had to watch the videos again myself to see what you had noticed! I think I see what you are asking about. Initially I had wired each battery bank with separate negative (yellow) cables running to the negative main buss on the engine room forward bulkhead. Running separate negative cables was overkill and unnecessary as they were/are both going to the same main negative buss. I later replaced the Engine Bank (#2) negative cable with a much shorter cable simply tying it into the House Bank #2 negative run at the batteries. The long cable I removed is now installed on our other boat. As you are likely finding out Tined Cooper Cable is expensive!! Wiring the Victron or any other 110v battery charger is pretty simple and straight forward. Sorry to say I don't have any wiring diagrams of how I wired the boat. It was a long process over a number of months. Lots of time just sitting on board analyzing where the best wiring runs might be...

  • @Even_Keeled
    @Even_KeeledАй бұрын

    @@Westsail28 Thanks for the feedback. I think I can relate to sitting onboard working your way through all the runs. I can see now how you have the house bank and starter setup.

    What do you feel are the pros and cons of the canoe stern. The stern hung rudder sure lends itself to low cost wind vane options. How is climbing aboard from a dinghy or the water?

  • @Westsail28
    @Westsail282 ай бұрын

    We have always owned double ended boats with outboard rudders and tillers. There are as many opinions as sailors about boat design. A double ender presents a better face (Smaller) to large following seas compared to a flat transom. They however have less deck space in the stern/cockpit. They allow for the easy installation of a stern hung outboard rudder. Having a large outboard rudder directly behind the prop makes handling in tight quarters much easier. In calm conditions with little or no current, I can spin the boat 180 degrees within slightly more than her own length using propwash, back and fill. The stern hung outboard rudder can be removed without compromising the boats buoyance and in emergency situations the rudder can be easily maneuvered/secured with lines wrapped around it. I can say from experience that it is easy to look down and see what is caught on an outboard rudder! It is also easier to remove the offending crab pot... We don't normally board from the stern, we usually board from the side. I have seen boats with outboard rudders that have steps attached to the sides of their rudders to facilitate boarding from the stern. In our experience with a windvane installed behind an outboard rudder it is difficult to board from the stern, but I expect others have found ways to do so. When backing into a quay or pontoon one must be cautious to not bang the rudder into either! The boomkin on a Westsail tends to protect the part of the rudder that's above the waterline, but one must also watch the portion under the water.

    @@Westsail28 Thanks for the reply. I own a wooden sail boat which I keep in the Netherlands. I had a Beta 14 installed a couple of years ago and last week also was confronted with overheating issues. Your video was extremely informative and gave me the confidence to try and locate the problem myself. I checked the raw water strainer, the impeller, coolant level and finally measured the raw water output from the muffler (18 liters/minute at 1500 rpm). Everything seemed fine. I also disassembled the end caps for the tube stack but found nothing unusual other than a very degraded anode. I reassembled everything and now the engine runs normal at 80 degrees Celsius. It's mysterious. I hope you don't mind my saying your demeanour reminds me of Walter Cronkite, very calm and very trustworthy. Looking forward to hear about your adventures with your new boat in Europe.

    I have heard a report that the WS 28 can be subject to pitching in a seaway. It is certainly a nice cruiser otherwise.

  • @Westsail28
    @Westsail282 ай бұрын

    I always chuckle when I hear someone say "I've heard ...." Usually, the information being quoted is from someone who heard from someone who heard it from someone else who knows someone else that said... Often when questioned, the person making the statement has no actual experience related to the issue. I can say that after thousands of miles and more than 20 years of sailing a W28 that I have never encountered any "pitching". But I have at times bashed into some unpleasant headwinds with breaking seas that resembled brick walls. That said, any boats motion thru the water is certainly affected by the sea conditions. Yes, a smaller boat will be more affected by sea conditions than a large boat. We can't change the sea conditions, but we can adjust our sails and/or heading.

  • @Westsail28
    @Westsail284 ай бұрын

    I did not remove the rubrail. It just happened that several of the missing bungs were located at the scraf joint in the rubrail so the rubrail popped out at that joint when I removed the fasteners. It was necessary to remove those fasteners to drill the bung holes a bit deeper.

    I would avoid “hanging” your fenders from the upper (or lower) lifelines, as the leverage angle can put considerable stress loads on the stantions. Best to make the fender lanyards off to the bottom of the stantions. I have installed brass half round on my W32 where fender lanyard chafe occurs. Just a thought. Like your solid pipe top cockpit lifeline.

If you look carefully there are some cracks in the original gate cables. I will eventually replace all the original lifelines.
