A new boat for us, Najad 390 Maybe...? Video #43 - "Starwhite"

We've been tempted by other boats in the past, but disappointed with what we found when we got to them.
Another boat has tempted us, she's faraway and I hope she will be worth the travel and time. Is this the boat that finally temps us away from Starwhite...?

What a lovely boat ! Looks to have some sea legs in her. The blue fabric and mid/dark woods complete a very cosy looking cabin. 🫡👍🏼🙏👏

The boat is a dream. I hope you liked the island of Lanzarote with its unique landscapes in the world, chosen by Hollywood for many of its films. Also birthplace of the so-called founding islanders of the cities of San Antonio, Galveztown and others. There were even several islanders defending the Alamo. Greetings from the Canary Islands!!!

OK, so I needed to keep watching! Got me thinking about getting in and around marinas with a boat like the Starwhite -- not so nimble I imagine. A bow thruster would almost feel like cheating after having invested the time to get the feel of "parking" the Westsail 28 in a slip consistently and with precision. But if I had a bow thruster I would definitely use every time if only to take the pressure off the deck hand(s). Best wishes.

I will fly my flag at half mast the day you let Starwhite go. I hope you find a boat worthy of replacing her but I’m sure that with your expertise and boat knowledge you will pick a winner. I look forward to sailing with you on your new old boat. Fair winds.

We have not made any decisions yet. The Admiral thinks we should keep Starwhite to use here in the PNW in the Summers and if we buy the other boat use it as a Winter getaway keeping it in a warmer climate.

@@Westsail28 ….. That is the best news I’ve had all day in a world gone mad. The thought of losing Starwhite would have been just one more thing wrong with the world. Thank you and may you fare well wherever you fare.

Thank god! You had me worried there for a minute! The Admiral always knows best. She is wise and her thought process isn’t bogged down in sailboat puppy love:) If I were you, I’d steal a line from Charlton Heston. “From my cold dead hands!”

Recently bought a Najad 360 in Greece. The aft cabin passage is something you have to get used to, at 6'1" I haven't banged my head yet. Beautiful boat in every way, good luck!

Well appointed and more spacious as expected for a 39 footer, but no match for the beautifully classic lines and economy of Starwhite

i’m a traditional cutter guy, but after owning a vagabond 42 , i have thought that perhaps i should consider a more modern approach to yacht construction…i’ve found that many of the perceived compromises were just that, and the najad is a very fine example of a step in this direction…she’s a fine yacht, and appears to have been well cared for…im not sure if let that low ceiling in stateroom passage would deter me based on the whole boat, but i understand completely about the need to love your yacht…not sure what is above the hall, but possibly a sacrificial lazerette ?…i agree that these kinds of design concessions can be very bothersome to me personally as well, but i think she has so many more attributes that possibly overcome this one in my mind… i’m sure if you choose her to be yours , you will make her one of the best of her kind…these boats are usually owned by more affluent cruisers that can afford to maintain them to very high standards…she seems to have been neglected recently, but it seems apparent that she was loved for most of her life.. can’t wait to see where you go with this one!… i wouldn’t classify this as a project boat by any means , but quite certain you’ll be making her one…i identify with your level of tastes and expectations completely… she’s a handful compared to starwhite , but i get the idea that you’re ready to treat yourselves to a higher calling.. best of wishes to you regardless of your decision.

I’ve enjoyed seeing all the upgrading you’ve done to Starwhite. I’ve wondered how someone would rig a self steering gear on your Westsail 28 with the stern pulpit. Also wondered about the strength of the back stay attachment. I was surprised to not see you over drilling the mast pulpit deck holes and filling them with epoxy and redrilling the holes when you attached the mast pulpit.

Thanks for the questions. Most of the W28's that have windvanes installed, they are attached to the boomkin. On Starwhite we would likely install a Cape Horn or Monitor windvane that would extend aft off the boomkin. Stern pulpits when installed, can be mounted further forward than in our installation. It is possible to install dual or split backstays that are run to chainplates on each side of the stern or to eyes that are welded to each side of the boomkin. I did epoxy the mast pulpit holes, but forgot to film the process.
