    King and Marshall, everyone waited to see if they showed. When they did they just said , well its over now may as well put it back on the trailer. The most feared team in drag racing. What many don't know is they arrived late on purpose because they knew it psyched out the other teams. Jimmy king was the man to beat but few did. After flipping it over one day they showed up the track with a wheel welded to the top of the cage. They were also famous for their El diablo outlaw funny car that went faster and faster every week resetting the record each time they ran. There seemed to be a slight discrepancy with the dimensions of this car. I say it was all in how one intuprited the ruler. So it was outlawed but still matched raced for many years until it sadly blew the rods out of the block and burned to the ground at Epping. You can't do that stuff anymore, they took the fun out of it when big money took over. Thank God for nostalgia cars. I'd rather see the names on the cars like jungle and twilight zone and far to many to name. I could care less if the bud car wins or the miller light mobil wins. Just my opinion your mileage may vary.

    I remember seeing Evel Knevel there, I think it was in '74. Gary Wells showed up and tried to steal the show with some no hands wheelies and the track officials with the cops chased him out in to the desert but couldn't catch him. Good times

    My name is Jody Taylor, one half of the taylor brothers Quick Wedge 1964 plymouth savoy. We raced with Clyde Edwards, Dennis Kucera, Harry Larson and Bill Hatcher both before and after he ran Mel Larsons Phoenix Dragway. Me and my brother charles were sponsored by Lopers Performance Center. Those were a great group of guys and we are so glad that they were in our lives. We ended up moving to california and eventually sold our quick wedge car to Andy Bodewin and Bob Hickman who were campaigning the Mr. Wood wedge car out of Riverside CA. If anyone nout there remembers our car or us hit us bacl

    It's a lot quieter with the track out of commission. I once knew all the info you are asking for as my mom owned the south 80 acres she had to repossess from the 1st buyer, Why the reason for the desired info? I don't believe anyone living in the housing addition would want their windows and ground shaking until their wells cave in (which did happen to some). Those cars are very loud but I loved the jet fuelers in action, still do.

    Hi Jody: I had heard of your Dad's passing. Like a lot of racers, we often only knew of each other at the races and seldom socially but there is still a grapevine. Glad to hear you still have the Outta Sight II (I believe) Wagon. Ran into you a few years ago. I imagine your Dad was still around, as you said you were looking for some Dana 60 gears for the Camaro. A kick to read these posts but better to have been there! Take care, Richard

    I am researching the history of this track. I was the one who ressurrected this track in 1984. We were turning this facility back into a major NHRA track with a one million dollar commitment from the owners. We were given a wwcs race for 1985 and a verbal commitment for a National event in 1986 if all the improvements were completed. We were building a 3 story timing tower with luxury suites, new timing equipment with scoreboards, complete resurfacing of the track and pit areas, new concession stands and rest rooms and much more. I had already spent almost $200,000.00 on the upgrades when the ownership group backed out. I am writing a memoir of all of this and I am trying to fill in the rest of the history of the track. I know the track was built in 1966 and James Garner was the major investor. It was called Willow Run Raceway and It was supposed to have a road racing track built there also but this never happened. I am trying to find out why. I also know that there was a nhra division points race there that the promoter took off with the gate receipts but I don't know exactly when that was. I was estatic to find this video of when it became an AHRA track and ran this race in 1970. All the big names were there and this race is famous for the guy named Syd Pogue who purposely ran over the Christmas tree because he lost his race. What I am looking for is other information about who the owners were, when it changed to Frontier International Raceway, dates of some of the races held there and other general information about the track. It is completely gone now with upacale housing built virtually on top of it. Any input I can get would be greatly appreciated.

    My Dad and I attended a National event in May 1967. I helped in the early 80"s to restart the facility. I was in Vietnam Nam in 1970. James Garner and Dan Blocker ( Hoss Cartwright) on Bonanza. My wife sent me news paper clippings from the 1970 season, I still have the clippings in a scrap book. The OKC city council rezone the land as a Flood Area which stopped construction of the track. I heard some of the crooked Council members bought the land and had it rezone for Home construction. What a sad loss for the OKC racing family. Glad to hear you are still around. I worked at the OKC General Motors Plant and got around 1500 names on a petition to open the track

    Amazing story !!!... growing up in the 60s and 70s of course my brother and I ended up hot-rodders. Really like seeing the old videos and cars. Definitely miss the 70s. Still have a couple cars kicking around restoring one that's been setting for many decades. We are still Mopar guys but it's great seeing all the cars. The diversity of Ford Chevrolet and Mopar, and the way the cars were designed were just magic for that era... I worry what the future is for all of it.

    I remember Rodney Bales as the one starting it back up. It ran for 2 years and we called the track Willow Run Drag Strip. They never started any big concession stand or a lavish tower. The tower was a make shift two story that I spent most of my time in running the clocks.

  • @TheDaddywag
    @TheDaddywag7 ай бұрын

    @roymoser82 Rodney approached the owner after I resigned after the owners backed out of going Forward with the 2 million dollars of improvements the agreed to with NHRA to make it a first class facility. Rodney talked the owners into letting him lease it so they could recoup some of their money that I had already spent. I had to cancel all the new equipment, the repaving of the tack, and the construction of the 3 story concrete block tower. It was a sad time for me. I told them they were making a big mistake to lease it to Rodney because he had no experience in running a track. I was a long time division 4 Racer and professional promoter. As it turned out I was right. They regretted their decision to let Rodney run it.

    I recall many of those mentioned. Lester Goff had one of two, Two Door Chevelle Wagons around Phoenix, the other being the Sassafras that I saw a lot at Mel Larson's (Speedworld) in the 70s and saw it again at Firebird on the 90s - Seems it was owned by a guy named Dave & his wife. It seems Harry Larson had a gas station on, maybe, Indian School as I saw the '57 wagon there a couple times. Saw Jim McDade a couple years ago in Gilbert Harbor Freight - he had moved way out of town somewhere. Got to know Clyde & Barb Edwards in the mid 80s - my first trip to Pomona was with Clyde. Then in the 90s when he raced his last car, which I believe is still running. As an adventurous twelve year old, I ditched school and made it to Beeline for the '65 W'nats. Yup, many memories and many fine people along the way! Now we'll see what the new guys at WHP do with it.
