@janisbrod27 күн бұрын
@@abhilabh90 it's a MIR 37mm lens with the front element reversed. It creates a similar effect to the custom lens made for Roger Deakins (the "Deakinizer") that he used on The Assassination of Jesse James (blur and stretched bokeh towards the edges, only focussed in the center of the frame).

@janisbrodАй бұрын
It wasn't that heavy of a setup but back then locked-off shots were definitely the only way to do this because there was no way to properly monitor it and I had to look at a squeezed image on the internal camera display. Now I have an AJA ROI that can rotate the image before going into an external monitor. That results in a much bigger and heavier rig but I'd be more comfortable shooting handheld with it because I can actually judge the framing and focus much better.

Just use simple 2.39:1 frame guides on your monitor and then crop in post accordingly. You'll always get the wider 2.66:1 aspect ratio (which your video is) when shooting with a 2x anamorphic lens on a 4:3 sensor. That's pretty standard and it's the same way on most professional film sets that shoot with anamorphics on the Alexa or classic 4-perf film. But the 2.39:1 aspect ratio is a much more common final format for cinema, so I just framed for that (using frame guides) and then had a 2.39:1 timeline for the edit (which cropped off a bit on both sides of the footage).

Janis, the video is amazingly beautiful: the framing, the color palette, the pace... everything. I think that the path that leads you to this artistic result was perfect. Having said this, I want to share with you and the community some insights in order to be more "efficient" in the use of the tools for further opportunities. When you use the ANAMORPH 4:3 mode on the Lumix S series (S1/S1H/S5) you are using only a center part of the sensor, and this leads you to use precisely only 20,93mm x 15,78mm form a 35,6mm x 23,8mm full frame sensor. You can check the hole analysis from Tito here kzread.info/dash/bejne/nJypy8mBXbyuqKQ.html explaining this if you want. The important thing to know is that you can use the camera in the regular way, horizontally, with the full frame enable and you will be able to capture the same amount of data that you have achieved in your "cumbersome" way, and you are going to have all the benefits of desqueezing in camera and also in external monitors. Then you can use guides to avoid the vignetting, if they annoys you, and see live the actual framing that you are going for. The important thing to understand is that your vertical 15,78mm x 20,93mm (after roating the camera) is already contained within the full frame. Again, I think that the most important thing is the result, which is incredible... but now that you have got it you can continue doing the same look with a better use of the tools. Greetings from Uruguay!!
