Hi there, friend. I've been trying to apply this tutorial to the new skaven but ran into a pair of roadblocks with my test models. First, my mix of grey skin contrast is too dark and isn't thin like yours, im not sure what went wrong with the mix. To lighten it, would you add stormvermin fur or medium? Second, you said you wash the fur with basilicanum grey to darken it after the first shade. Did you dillute the Basilicanum grey with medium/water or use it right from the pot? Great video, im looking forward to seeing if you cover anything from the new box!
Hi and thanks for watching! To lighten the skin mix I would add in more medium. Make sure your undercoat (grey/white primer is light enough as well, because that will affect the final color too). And i didn't dilute the Basilicanum Grey, i used it right from the pot (I didn't have much paint on the brush when I painted it, that way I had more control over where the paint settled). Good luck!
Thanks!
Thank you so much!
Hey, Thank you so much for this video, it was exactly the kind of video I needed right now - I’m just out of hospital. As someone else mentioned, you really are the Bob Ross of the mini painting community. Have liked and subbed.❤
Thanks for watching and subscribing! Best wishes for a speedy recovery!
@@MattsHobbyHour Thank you very much - lots of rest is needed.x
Great stuff, as usual! Good, now I have to go back to painting a hundred miniature ratmen or so.
thanks for watching and good luck on the swarm of rats!
would love to see you do a Leviathan hive fleet contrast nid, feel like you would do a really good job
thanks for the suggestion! I'll add it to the queue. I need to think of a way to put my spin on it first... I've avoided Leviathan so far just because there are so many tutorials for it already.
Hi matt, I am following your instructions to paint a group of saurus warriors. Was wondering whether you could give some tips to improve them. Was thinking about some highlights of the spikes, but unsure how to do it
Hi and yes I'm happy to help out with some pointers. My video on the Spawn of Chotec has some tips about highlighting scales, though it's in red and not green, the approach would be the same. Do you have Discord or Instagram? I have links in my About section; feel free to join the Discord server or send me a message on Instagram. It's easier to share photos of your models on one of those platforms.
I got discord. Will do! and I'll have a look at the video. Any advice regarding the colours in advance?
I am stealing the blues for my Seraphon Saurus warriors.
great! Hope it works out for you. Good luck!
What was the first paint you used on the min
I used a mix of Skeleton Horde and Contrast Medium for the first layer. There's a full tutorial video on my channel, and I explain the whole process in a lot of detail. Hope you can check it out. Thanks for watching!
@@MattsHobbyHour I will.
You’re one of my favorite painters on here and your voice is really pleasant to listen to. I feel like I learn something new every video.
that's really kind of you to say! I'm glad you enjoy the videos. Thanks for watching!
Didn't realize Kroot went into battle with oven-stuffer roasters hanging from their belts. Hah! Thanks for the video Mr. Matt.
I didn't know either, but now i'm hungry! Thanks for watching Shane
Yes Matt, please paint more Kroot
This tutorial will really help get my Kroot force off the ground. I would like to thank everyone at Matt's Hobby Hour for making this possible.
Just came across your channel loving the content I myself I’m starting again on KZread doing painting videos etc check it out I’d love your opinions on things
I will check it out, thanks for watching!
Matt I love your videos and your sublime voice!
thank you for the kind words!
Lovely video Matt! The Kroot is my army and currently finishing up the hunting pack box! 🎉
Awesome! I bet its a lot of fun to paint. Thanks for watching!
Greate video Alos is minature of mounth But i dont have air brush so might not use it afterwards...
Yep it is the free miniature this month! You don't need an airbrush to follow along; you could spray the model white and get great results too. Thanks for watching!
Great as always :)
Thank you!
Great tutorial and paint scheme. I’ll do my best to replicate it when I pick up my Skaventide this weekend. How long did it take you to do a single model?
Thanks! Good luck with your models! I would estimate it would take me 20-30 minutes per model, not including drying time, and if I wasn't filming. Since I was filming the whole process, it takes way longer.
I already like dark paint schemes and this is a fantastic color combo that I am absolutely stealing
Sounds great! Hope the color scheme works out well for your army. Good luck!
You've fast become my favourite painting KZreadr. I've learnt a truck load of new things watching your work and your dulcet tones make it eay to listen to
Thank you! That's really great to hear. Glad to have you following along!
Totally agree and I also dig the tunes!
Fantastic. Can you do 90's heavy metal ork now ?
Best orc skin i ever saw.
that's some high praise! Thanks for watching!
@@MattsHobbyHouri was looking for that old cartoon green orc skin of the 3rd ed. I dont like the later gw orc skin . Thanks again for the recipe.
@@mikarage3677 thanks! I'm glad it was helpful to you.
great work, love the color of the skin.
Thanks! I'm really liking Kroak Green lately.
I never would have guessed that was static grass. I would have sworn it was tufts it looks so good
I think the trick is to use a really small amount of glue. Thanks for watching!
Comped
I was 3 minutes into the video pausing to write down what paints your using the found them in description. Your awesome man and I can't get enough of your videos. The calm background music and your tone of voice really makes your channel a joy to watch. Take care buddy 🤜🏾
Thanks for watching! Glad to have you here. Good luck with your painting!
Great tutorial! I´d like to add that you can totally blackline with a marker pencil if you can find one with a tip fine enough. That might be easier for those who are not as confident in their brushwork. Cheers.
Thanks for watching, and for the tip!
@@MattsHobbyHour No problem. I use Staedtler liner pencils (the very fine-tipped ones) to blackline with if you want to try it out. Thanks once again for the great tutorial.
amazing, I will definitely use this for my army!
Thanks for watching and good luck with your army!
16:44 is actually part of the skin, the crest to be precise.
thanks for watching and for clarifying!
Lovely paintjob! It does cost like £60 just due to the number of contrast paints, though.
Thanks! Yes unfortunately the paints are expensive. I wish the hobby was a little more affordable.
@@MattsHobbyHour Ah, nah, paints can be a little steep, but they are real good quality products, so it's understandable. I might try to do something similar, as I have made quite a hefty investment in traditional paints already, let's see how things turn out :)
I'd love to have a 6th edition WHFB Skaven army some day! I'll have to use these tips and tricks when I'm working on them in the future!
A 6th edition Skaven army should be on every proper wargamer's list of goals!
I'd love to see a Contrast Hacks! on the new Grey Seer. :3
Sounds like a great idea! Once I get my claws on one I'll have to film it. Thanks for watching!
nice work. really enjoying your channel
Glad you enjoy it, thanks for watching!
If I had not already stopped on a scheme for my Skavens, yours is defintely one of the best quick and easy to do!
That's a really cool idea with the green glowing eyes. Don't think I've ever seen anyone do that before. I have enough 4th/5th ed. WFB Skaven to crush a small child. Most of it is old metal, but I have hundreds of the old "strike a pose" plastic clan rats. I toyed around with different schemes for them, mostly centered around using the Army Painter dips and they don't look too bad. Might have to try some contrast on them too now that I have those paints. Cheers Mr. Matt!
I love those old Skaven models. Especially the plastic ones, even though they get a lot of hate. Lots of nostalgic value. Thanks as always Shane! Good luck with the horde of rats!
Great video as always! I’m gonna be totally honest and say that next week when I get my skaventide box set this will be my clan rat color scheme
Awesome! I hope it works out for you. Good luck! Feel free to share your results in our Discord server!
@@MattsHobbyHour a tutorial on the Greyseer would rock!!
Looks fantastic!
thank you!
Thanks for posting color mixes. Great look.
Thanks for watching!
Dude, thank you so much for posting this! I was waiting for skaven clanrats! They look really good too!!! I'm trying this out tonight. I Really enjoy your content, man =) Keep it up
Thanks! Good luck with your rats, I hope they turn out great!
Brilliant mate! Easy to replicate and great results :)
Glad to hear that, thanks for watching!
Super great paint tutorial! I wanna see more Skaven on your channel :) BTW. Matt, Can you make some water effect/ toxic puddles on some bases?
Thanks! I'll make sure to get some more Skaven up in the rotation. Great idea for some bases; I'll include that in a future guide!
Encore plus de skaven ❤ please
First time I've watched your channel- some excellent tips for washes and mixes that I haven't tried before! Nice work.
Welcome to the channel! Glad you liked what you saw. Thanks for watching!
wow. I mentioned this on another video and I feel it bares repeating- I would be sooo thrilled if you made more skaven content. The other video was Seraphon, the reason I'm saying this is your approach to painting scales (& skin) is remarkable. I would love to see your approach fur (& skin) keeping in mind that just as beasts with scales come in all colors, so do beasts with fur. Most guides for painting skaven do similar things with the skin & fur but I feel like it can be embellished in all sorts of different ways. The more variety the better. Any number of color pallets you can think to put on a skaven I will certainly be trying. Thank you, and so glad I found your channel!
Thanks for all the kind words! I have a couple Skaven videos now, and I'll try to include some more (Seraphon too) in the future. Thanks for watching!
You have been my goto painting youtuber recently, absolutely stellar tutorials ! Loving the recent simpler faster style tutorials especially. Keep up the good work! Also Any chance for a fast tank guide ? Like Solar Auxilia etc ?
Thanks for the kind words! That's really cool to hear. Yeah I can try to work a tank in to the mix! It wouldn't be Contrast paint though, I don't think it looks good on vehicles and large surfaces. Probably more of an airbrush and traditional methods kind of guide.
@@MattsHobbyHour That is fine !
Il try it. I will inecitably fail. I will try again
Keep trying and practicing, and you'll succeed. Good luck!
Love the scheme, gonna follow this for my 'nids. What do you think works for the brain models, mostly a teal/aethermatic blue? I'd love to see you do a bigger model with this formula. Currently practicing on my termagants so far. Thanks for the awesome channel and videos!
Thanks for watching! Yeah I think a real would look cool on the brains, maybe Terradon Turquoise. Or something similar to the gun with Magos Purple could be cool as well. I'll have to get a bigger model and give it a shot. Good luck with your army!
