The mark of a true DIYer is using that red RTV. When a real mechanic sees that crap, we know that Harry Homeowner has had his dick beaters in there, and I charge accordingly.

I would use permatex anaerobic sealant. Volvo uses it for their oil pans and upper heads (there is no valve cover, the head splits in half to reveal the cam in its entirety), and that stuff almost NEVER fails. You will pop cam seals and crankshaft seals and every other gasket and hose on that engine before you spring a leak from the seal between the block and oil pan or the upper and lower head.

I trust rtv more then I trust me not nicking an o-ring lol. Also, in case you need it in the future, you can buy o ring stock and use super glue to basically make your own in whatever length you need
