    Maybe I'm wrong but it sure looked like you shot a bull who was on our near a skyline and shot at a cow who had a calf with her. One is unsafe and the other is unethical.

    Plant hybrid willows and hybrid poplars. They will be 15+ ft tall in 2-3 yrs. 25ft in 5yrs or less. I have a ton of poplars and willows over 20ft in my swamp that are only 3-5yrs old.

    Looks like a fun experiment. I did something similar last year. Are you going to do some cut and stab in the ground as well? I found its more time consuming and difficult to plant them with tender roots. Are you going to spray your RCG before you plant? I've had good results with cutting and stabbing with multiple sizes of cuttings. It's a lot of fun trying different things. Good luck.

    I'd also strongly recommend waiting until early June to broadcast onto a clean seedbed, it works much better than frost seeding.

    Something isn't right with your plantings, my first years SG will go 2-3' and year 2 it's over 6', year 3 it's impenetrable. I'm in Southern Michigan now, but even my UP of Michigan plantings are similar. June 22, 2022 my 2 YO SG is over 4' already.

    Quinclorac + 2,4-D will kill the grassy weeds as well as the broadleaf junk. I just sprayed that plus fertilizer (weed and feed), on my prairie restoration. Quinclorac is really great on foxtail because repeated cuttings will just make foxtail send out seed heads at a shorter height. The great news is that foxtail goes away completely once you have a dense stand of grass. Do you burn? Controlled burns help control weeds and small trees very well.

    That’s funny you say that because I sprayed 2-4D and quinclorac on the fields about a month ago and was very happy with the results. Will be shooting a video on it shortly. Thanks for the insight!

    @@thewhitetailchase2924 It's amazing how well the two work together. Adding Miracle Grow 'grass food' (for end of hose sprayers) to the mix speeds things up as well. It makes the bad stuff die faster and the good stuff grow faster. Do people ever grow other grasses for deer habitat? Little bluestem and big bluestem come to mind, but there us also buffalo grass that will fill the spaces between the taller grasses and keep out the weeds. Big bluestem can get ten feet tall (seed heads), and I'm sure there would be places for it.

    Just a couple thoughts from past experience. If you disced it up, chances are there will be a ton of competition come early spring because a lot seeds are dormant in the soil and "come to life" once they get brought up to surface and get sun and moisture. Many of them will germinate before the switchgrass does. My experience in South Central Wisconsin is that switchgrass won't germinate until Mid to late May and lots of other weeds/grasses do before that. Putting down Simazine (a pre emergent) in March (beginning to mid) will be well worth it to help prevent your switchgrass from getting taken over and give it a head start. Best of luck, hope you keep us posted!!

  • @kurtcaramanidis5705
    @kurtcaramanidis57052 жыл бұрын

    Good for you. Are you going to do any seeding in May with a drill or broadcast to compare the difference? I'm not far from you and my drilled and broadcast did way better than my frost seeding. I did not stratify and it came up great.

    Nice camp. I have similar gear but don’t use it. Used to be a family affair, but the old guys aged out year before last. I went solo last year for the first time and had even a better time. I’m pretty extreme so I like doing things a lot different than pretty much everyone, but I still appreciate a nice camp set up when I see it

    For the 2.5 acre section I will be planting real world switchgrass. I will be doing more research this year and creating my own mix for future years to come. Going to be looking for height, thickness, and stand ability during the winter. As well as what grows well in lower areas.

    Thanks for making ongoing video of the switch. I have some switchgrass and bunch more going in this spring. My recommendation to you to really make the biggest jump is burn the fields this coming spring in about end of April. When soil temps get to about 50. That helped my switch really take off. It cut down the competition from foxtail and allowed the grass that had good roots to really take off right when it started to grow. Then just leave it rest of year 3 as long as it is growing and looking good.

    Nice work plan. Are you any seeing any switch yet? I frost seeded switch for the first time last year. It was a great stand and nearly 5' tall in the first fall. Planted more this year with results like you have. I've tried to keep it mowed but it doesn't look anything like the first year switch I planted. I plan on hitting it with simazine and glysophate again in spring. Keeping fingers crossed. If I don't see much evidence of switch coming in after corn is up a week or so in the spring, I will drill it in.

  • @thewhitetailchase2924

    I planted at 8lbs per acre and I broadcast all three fields. It’s a great question as to why it isn’t very thick. Field #1 is the thickest which is the only field that has had crops in it in the past. It’s definitely a question that has been lingering in my mind. My best guess is that it comes down to soil quality or soil compaction? Part of the reason why I decided to disc the two strips in field 2 and get that seed on the ground this fall.

    Have you considered letting some of that go into natural regeneration or do you need the switch for pheasant hunters?

  • @thewhitetailchase2924
    @thewhitetailchase29242 жыл бұрын

    We would like the switch to be for the pheasant hunters. When we get a wet snow, we find that the regen areas do not do well to standing up against the Wisconsin winters.

    @@thewhitetailchase2924 Makes sense. I've got both going in a couple ag field conversions. The switch looks very good 1st year and I've got a lot of young trees as well as a bunch that I planted. I'm just doing it for deer and wildlife though. I also planted Ernst Shawnee. I'm in FDL county. I had my farmer drill my switch into the picked cornfield and it worked great with no chemical treatment at all. Good luck.

    Yeah I’ve planted 120 on the edges of the wet area. I found that they have a hard time if it’s too wet. There is a very fine line on how much they will take. If there is ever standing water after a hard rain, they probably won’t make it. Love them for thermal cover, just have to pick the location wisely. This area was way too wet.
