Quinclorac + 2,4-D will kill the grassy weeds as well as the broadleaf junk. I just sprayed that plus fertilizer (weed and feed), on my prairie restoration. Quinclorac is really great on foxtail because repeated cuttings will just make foxtail send out seed heads at a shorter height. The great news is that foxtail goes away completely once you have a dense stand of grass. Do you burn? Controlled burns help control weeds and small trees very well.

That’s funny you say that because I sprayed 2-4D and quinclorac on the fields about a month ago and was very happy with the results. Will be shooting a video on it shortly. Thanks for the insight!

@@thewhitetailchase2924 It's amazing how well the two work together. Adding Miracle Grow 'grass food' (for end of hose sprayers) to the mix speeds things up as well. It makes the bad stuff die faster and the good stuff grow faster. Do people ever grow other grasses for deer habitat? Little bluestem and big bluestem come to mind, but there us also buffalo grass that will fill the spaces between the taller grasses and keep out the weeds. Big bluestem can get ten feet tall (seed heads), and I'm sure there would be places for it.

Thanks so much for this series. Switchgrass establishment can be tricky and I appreciate you showing your methods and results.

Thanks for making ongoing video of the switch. I have some switchgrass and bunch more going in this spring. My recommendation to you to really make the biggest jump is burn the fields this coming spring in about end of April. When soil temps get to about 50. That helped my switch really take off. It cut down the competition from foxtail and allowed the grass that had good roots to really take off right when it started to grow. Then just leave it rest of year 3 as long as it is growing and looking good.

What was the quinclorac rate per acre?

Have you considered letting some of that go into natural regeneration or do you need the switch for pheasant hunters?

We would like the switch to be for the pheasant hunters. When we get a wet snow, we find that the regen areas do not do well to standing up against the Wisconsin winters.

@@thewhitetailchase2924 Makes sense. I've got both going in a couple ag field conversions. The switch looks very good 1st year and I've got a lot of young trees as well as a bunch that I planted. I'm just doing it for deer and wildlife though. I also planted Ernst Shawnee. I'm in FDL county. I had my farmer drill my switch into the picked cornfield and it worked great with no chemical treatment at all. Good luck.

I think you might be surprised if you read the bags of seed there's a percentage they call Active/ dormant I just got a new one that says 80% dormant meaning it won't grow until the second season you might just get loaded up

What rate did you plant the switch at, why such a sparse take?

I planted at 8lbs per acre and I broadcast all three fields. It’s a great question as to why it isn’t very thick. Field #1 is the thickest which is the only field that has had crops in it in the past. It’s definitely a question that has been lingering in my mind. My best guess is that it comes down to soil quality or soil compaction? Part of the reason why I decided to disc the two strips in field 2 and get that seed on the ground this fall.
