Sojournies

Sojournies

Hey y'all! I'm Sojourner White - a remote social worker, award-winning travel journalist, and train travel queen. Hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin I have been a digital nomad, called Spain home as a study abroad student turned English teacher with the Fulbright Program, and spent a summer in Germany as an International Social Work graduate student intern. But now, through my platform Sojournies, I help 9-5ers fulfill their career goals and bucket list dreams to bask in freedom and flexibility outside the office.

On my channel, we talk about everything from train travel and Black solo female travel to remote work, hostels, social work, and balancing travel with a 9-5!

Girl, the Canadian is $3000 in a bunk... but worth every penny!! (and huge discounts if you buy your tickets on Tuesdays!) The lower bunks have a window and are super comfy and you have access to the shower, and the food (3 meals a day plus various surprises, snacks, champagne, bites fresh off the oven...) is like a 5 star restaurant...

I'd say taking the Canadian in winter, Toronto to Vancouver (Westbound) is BREATHTAKING (and also cheaper). Every season is amazing on that route but summer is definitely crowded.

My No.1 tip is always pack a shawl or sweater even in J:uly because I love to stay up in the dome car at night and there is always some wind coming in in tiny joints in the windows!

In Canada and Western Canada especially, there are graves of Asian people who built the railroad beside the railway, so we have that kind of history here too. My grandfather was a train conductor (Montreal-Gaspé), my dad cleared up rocks off the tracks in BC and Alberta, and I worked on the Canadian between Winnipeg & Vancouver 🚂

It’s not strength per se, it’s cardio and endurance. Something power lifters don’t tend to do.

If you come to live in Mexico. As long as you stop calling yourselves expats and identify correctly as immigrants, pay taxes, learn the language and stop trying to mute the culture (see the puerto vallarta incident). I have no issue with it as a Mexican.

It's not worth it as a person of color. Social work practices are deep rooted in colonialism / white supremacy. The work environments are toxic. And the pay is abysmal even though we do 4-5 jobs under one title.
