ADV Noobie

ADV Noobie

Hi, I'm Alex and and I'm an Adventure Bike Noobie- there, I said it! This is my spin on ADV bike vlogging as a non expert and I hope you enjoy my journey.
As time goes on, I'd like to pull in some of my other experience as an expedition and pre hospital care doctor and how we can learn some skills for any bike trip. I've managed medical emergencies in remote locations all over the world and have taught expedition courses in polar, jungle, mountain, desert and maritime environments.

The power of these lights is great. But what good is it to have powerful light when the housings made of aluminum turn onto white powder reminiscent of talc ? These lamps are expensive, but I followed advise when told “cheap ends up being expensive”. In this case these expensive lamps are not only expensive but so far Denali refused to acknowledge this issue and told me off, so I was basically ripped off. I have plenty evidence , photographic evidence to show these lights are not worth the expense. Not only because the lamps were not made of quality materials but most offensive is fact Denali cares less ! Do not buy this product unless you like to throw money out the window !

A little concerned about the number of times he says "I'm really getting used to this bike". Seems its not a bike that requires some "getting used to".

I'm thinking of buying the same stand, but have the WP XPLOR PRO suspension (same as the one on the 890 Rally) with 270mm of travel. Do you think the motorcycle will be raised enough for the wheels to not touch the ground with the extra 30 mm?

The Klim Krios Pro is a $800 helmet after taxes. You would expect perfection in all aspects and it's almost there BUT the visor will NOT stay where you place it. Open it up a few notches for extra air, first little dip or bump in the road and SLAM down it comes! I love everything about this helmet except the hinge plates. They are very cheaply made. It makes me wonder if anyone that actually rides tests them?? It is a $800 helmet WT Actual F?!

Block and tackle doesn't take up much room and makes lifting/recovery solo so much easier. You can balance the bike and pull on the rope at the same time (using the compound mechanical advantage).

You probably should’ve put the kickstand up before you start lifting it. It might stop the bike from falling over the other side. Not exactly sure in your situation. Just a thought.

I just roll the rear wheel into a socket tool used to tighten the lug and it does the same thing without having to strap the bike.

Just one problem with UK bike reviews. The road speeds are a joke and no one's game enough to give a bike some stick. Just putting around.

Update- I think this may have been my fault and KTM seem to think so. I wired the 12v sensor wire the Denali lights into a switched 12v line but not the aux power lines. They seem to think this messed with the CANBUS system over time, possibly due to a bit of corrosion. Probably arguable but it was an expensive fix. Learning point- don’t mess with any wiring except the aux power take offs!!

Great review-Had a 2022 1290SDG for a short time - loved the bike when it was not back at the dealer or broken down. Unfortunately a mate had similar experience on his SAR. Formidable bikes but unreliable and poor OEM support so will pass for a while.

After getting in situations like this with my Africa Twin, I sold it. It was almost 100lb heavier and didn't have the low fuel tank advantage. It was a real liability riding it to places like you went alone. Swapped it for a DR650 and couldn't be happier in the weight department.

I think with the smoothness of the ride is because originally on the 2021 and 2022 there was 2 mappings put on the bike the first was the original but because of the euro 5 regulations they had the restricted mapping put on i had my ktm 1290 sas 2022 remapped by bhpuk in Burnley and the gains were 75% better throttle response and mid range low range pulls much better less vibration through foot pegs and seat handlebars.

To date have not found a loose bolt... there have been some other exciting issues but not a single loose bolt... hope you have been sorted and are enjoying the bike👍

My first mod was KTM Rally pegs - nice. My second mod was trade it in for a Tenere 700, after the ADV-R's cam chain tensioner failed and KTM had no replacements available. That was an even better mod.

Hi I am in that position where I am considering a replacement for my 790Adv R but most of my riding is commuting to work and yet my goal is to do more off road, ideally the UK TET sections. Do I go for a 1290 Adv S or R or do I go for the 890 Adv R? Your thoughts are most welcome.

When I have this thing on it's top edge is at my eyebrows with the XL! Tried the Medium, too small, but the shell was smaller and the top edge not on my eyebrow. So I think it depends on your head shape and size. This guys weird head shape has the top edge considerable ABOVE his eyebrow. So which shell size and which head shape you have will make a huge difference! I have yet to try the Large. Wonder if it is an in-between shell size or a Medium or XL shell size?

Why complain i just buy a new one every 6 months or so 😂 I kinda circled back to the super adventure and have a big smile again. On my 890 i triggered mtc error by removing the abs sensor. Because with mtc and abs it rides like shit. And never go from 1290 to 890 is the lesson I learned.

Awesome, I have this exact setup and i planned to use it for a trip from Germany to West Sahara, I am a little unsure about the rear life span. I actually bought the new Mitas Enduro Trail XT+, it looks just a little more agressive, I am still on the fence about mileage on tough trails, with rocks and gravel for 8k kms. The front i have is the Dakar version, i have no concerns about it, tough as nails.
