    I found, when doing the slide joints on the rails, that leaving them in the closed position and doing a sliding `as-is` joint will keep them where they are and allow the minimum to be 0 and the offset to be whatever number was measured. Seemed a bit more intuitive.

  • @David_Best

    Agree. This type of joint facility where you can add motion to any type of joint (including “as built”) is relatively new in Fusion and how I would present it if I remade the video today. The new joint facility is a response to specific feedback from users such as myself. It is a huge improvement.

    Great video!! I do have one question and it may be a setting on my version of 360. Has the grounding changed? I had the hardest time with that. If you grounded it always reverted back to original import directions and then I couldn't figure out how to move it. I worked through it, but it was a pain in my but. The video was fantastic. I have been designing a vanity for my daughter and wanted to get the slides incorporated to make sure it was all going to fit and work. Got it all done and LOVE it! THANKS!!

    Yes, grounding has changed to "Pin" with the introduction of Ground to Parent. Fusion now automatically generates a "ground to parent" attachment unless you disable that feature in the settings - which I have done. I find the need "ground to parent" very obscure and difficult to know when to use it. Since I have never needed that feature before, I turned it off. More detail here - including my comment about how obscure this feature is: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oH2ak5Nrk5qudrQ.htmlsi=zS4Lp7_AnzpOgjzW

    hope you are still checking these posts. you mention that you are making sure the cast iron table is level as a first step. level in reference to what? I'm thinking that you zero the level to the floor first but maybe not. Thanks.

  • @David_Best
    @David_Best2 ай бұрын

    Yes I I am checking commentary here. The important thing is that the cast-iron table is flat. I mean dead flat as in one single plane. The cast iron top becomes the reference surface to which you align the sliding table, so if the reference surface is not flat, you’re chasing your tail. The easiest way to ensure the cast iron tops is flat is to level it precisely along all four edges. If all four edges of the cast-iron top are level then the surface is flat - or at least as flat as you’re going to get it. The cast top doesn’t have to be level per se, but it does have to be as flat as possible. Cast iron surfaces are easy to twist into the shape of a banana if your machine is not sitting on a flat floor surface (Felder machine chassis are flexible enough to conform to the floor surface). So I always recommend putting the machine on adjustable leveling feet and using those leveling feet to adjust the top to a flat surface. But the cast iron top is suspended at all four corners via adjustable studs which attach it to the machine chassis. You can use those four adjustment points to bring your cast-iron top into a near perfectly flat condition. Once that’s accomplished, you can move onto aligning the sliding table surface to the cast-iron top surface. Hope this helps.

  • @David_Best
    @David_Best3 ай бұрын

    It depends on the machine, the size of the sliding table, and how out-of-level your floor is. In general, the Felder machines all have a machine chassis that is flexible, so if you're floor is flat, you should be fine. But if it's not flat or you move it to staggered elevations because of cracks in the concrete, etc, then you could have ongoing sliding table alignment distortion.

    On larger machines like the sliding table saw, I generally pay to have Felder commission the machine so that if there are missing parts, damaged parts, or parts that are out of tolerance (happens a lot), then there isn't finger pointing. But as soon as the tech leaves, I do a complete realignment of basically everything.

    Thank you for the video! I was hopping I could find some info on how to work and manage drillings in Fusion 360. Could I ask you, or anyone willing to give some tips on how to efficiently work with drillings? Ideally I wish that I could pre-attach protruding drillings to parts, and then pull them in to a project so that when they are placed to another part, the drillings appear also. For example I would create a shelf and it would have 4 protruding drillings on its sides, 2 on one side and 2 on the other. So that when I place it between 2 panels, it would create 2 drillings in each of the panels.

    David, when you "import into current design" and attach to a "wall", your drawer slide still animates. When I do it, I have to add the ground on the cabinet rail again other wise all 3 rails move as a group. Is re-grounding the cabinet rail once it is imported something you did, but didn't show? Or am I hitting a limit on the free version? Or doing some other newbie thing wrong!

  • @David_Best
    @David_Best4 ай бұрын

    @@janodi1155How did you "attach" the slide to the "wall" of your cabinet? In my example, I used a RIGID joint command to anchor the cabinet rail to the wall of the cabinet. I used a point on the face of the cab rail component (middle front position of the face that will become flat against the cabinet wall) as the "from" and used the point I created in the sketch as the "to" position for the joint. Assuming the cabinet side (wall) is grounded in space, the cab rail should be anchored to the cabinet wall, and you shouldn't have to ground it again. My guess is a) either your cabinet side (wall) is not grounded, or b) you specified the wrong "from" point (called "joint origin") on the cab rail for the joint. Very interesting detail on how to adjust your slider so thank you for this. I assume this method relies on the slider itself to be flat (planar) along its length but I can’t see anyway around making that assumption. I expect some deformation (bowing probably) could occur over time along the slider’s length. I also liked your suggestion of the cheat sheet - it’s easy to make mistakes when things aren’t going to plan. Cheers.

    I struggled with my shaper recently after cutting my stock to final width before shaping, not taking it into account what I would lose in total width from the cutters. Is there a standard to how much width you should expect to lose?

  • @David_Best
    @David_Best7 ай бұрын

    There is no rule on this - it all depends on what technique you are using to profile the material. Generally I take the cutter profile depth and add 2mm to that. If I'm using a back fence, I set up the machine to profile and bring to width in the same operation. If I'm profiling against the shaper fence, I will stagger the outfeed fence so that the material coming off the cutter, which is now 2mm less wide, has a fence plate to rest against - that way the material doesn't cock outward as it's forced against the outfeed fence by the feeder. Hope this helps. Thanks for viewing.

Custom router bits are better than corrugated knives and are faster SU.

    I bought the PC 14" dry cut chop saw at that time and the first blade (off shore) immediately went dull. Returned that blade and they gave me (2 weeks) a replacement; out of round and head was bouncing up and down. Finally a blade from Japan and love the dry cut for fab work. Had to modify the saw for better angles. I have oxy-acet. The TIG I need is $14-17K so I will wait. I have made custom exhaust headers for V6 gas motors and acet works OK. I bought lots of jigs for the PC 24" dove tail before they quit selling that model. I used brass feeler gage leaves to shim the PC for better cutting. Talk about keeping your wits about yourself with dove tail work using the PC system.

    Having the Felder Format4 shaper and several toolings that require a close fit at 170MM and 70MM I have made some .3935" thick rings of maple and white oak to reduce the gap between ring and tooling. I use 3M clear packing tape with the tape over the back edge of the ring at the walls. This seems to be OK and does not interfere with wood at the fence. I was going to make some aluminum rings but maple is very stable. The maple fit just pops into the metal nicely but I still use the tape.

    Thanks I have the 2500 long slider on the Format4 shaper. The 10' slider is on a T60 Martin. The early Martin rip fence has no micro adjust for parallel to blade; I added 4 cap screws-OK now. I find the longer slider on the shaper to be a luxury thing in running the shaper. On the Felder 2500 slider I find the one and only stop to be a pain; I have added a second stop about 9" from the one stop and this is good for stopping the shaper for tooling changes and adjustments and keeping hands away from the spindle. The T60 has slider stops all over the place. I see you have the Vincent Rolfe fore finger, good. If I had it to do again I would place the second stop for the shaper at 11-12" from the original one.
