The Colour Cave

Welcome to the Colour Cave, where we like to play with art stuff!

Videos twice a week on art products, drawing/creating art and adult colouring. I wanted to share my arty journey with everyone and show you don't have to be a professional artist to enjoy and create beautiful art. If you don't mind a slightly rambling Scotswoman, subscribe and come and join us in the Cave - we're a happy bunch!

I now have the technology to watch a sped up version of your show and thank goodness for that. You talk talk talk and a lot of it is wasted time. You think people are listening to you. We know they're not listening to you. It takes you forever to set-up what you want to say. Then it turns out what you're talking about isn't that important to learn. I learned despite what you were saying that I should put down Derwent chromaflow lead gently but add more pencil colours to create a richness in the drawing. Instead of doing 1-3 layers of the 1 colour, I should be doing 5-6 layers of different colours. I was able to now do metal objects in silver, gold, carbon, black and titanium pencils. And in having all those colours in layers, lightly applied I was able to get metal objects to have light reflections and 3D shading etc... So chromaflow puts down 1 extremely vibrant line but you benefit from that after you put down 40 different coloured lines next to each other. So, yeah, chromaflow is extremely complex when you apply it lightly but with a lot of colours. 1 leaf can be made up of 6 different colours. If you do this technique, you benefit greatly from the vibrant conservative colours Derwent offers you.

That page is looking gorgeous so far! :) Had to watch the videos over a longer spread of time... I've caught a really bad cold, so I'm really tired all the time :( meds haven't helped, yet...

Water brushes definitely have their place, but I'm starting to feel like they've become a bit of a subscription box 'filler'. Also, I agree with you on the 'waterproof' claims. 😊

Many thanks for this detailed video about the different Derwent coloured pencils. Yes, I am one of those confused people about which product I want to get from the Derwent line. I always do my research and this has been very helpful. Many thanks. ❤

It’s interesting how many techniques were used in this video because of the assortment of items. You did such a good job explaining how to do the inkwell. I also like inktense (as well as Neocolor IIs ) mostly for coloring books, because even after watching videos of other people making original pieces with them, I can’t quite figure out how to do that effectively. Now that you have done a lot more painting, do you finally consider yourself a painter?

I love how you use light, especially the halo of light around the candle. I might have thought of that in a charcoal/pastel drawing but I know I wouldn't think of it for colored pencils and coloring pages (which are great for practicing techniques and ideas)

This looks great. I appreciate seeing your method of watering down the concentration of color using the brush on paper before applying to the book, as you did on the fancy page edge. I hadn’t thought of that and sometimes inktense is hard to do in a subtle way. You seem to be enjoying yourself which made it even more fun to watch!

Hullo Gem! I am so glad your moving ahead with these pages! I have been spending my time working on a new watercolor palette, It is a custom palette from ROBAX in Florida. It is a wonderfully made palette and had a "lazy susan" for rotation! I even sprung for the well liners so I can move the paints about! I have made mistakes and I spend to much time digging out a misplaced color! Yes, I know people have told me to just get over it, but I simply must have them correct! oK On with the show!

I mean, did we have markers already in all kinds of color and variety? Yes, we did. BUT we ended up with a potential new sticker, so I can't be too mad at the box 😂 Seriously though, like you said, there are only so many art supplies to put in those boxes. I'm glad I quit my upcrate nevertheless. Thanks for keeping us up to date 😄

Hullo Gem, I believe you do a lovely job with the markers! I have found that lately I am doing better with comic coloring. I did inking way back when and I have dozens of plates and I just copy them to marker paper and spend time coloring them in. I do enjoy your mecha-animals! I missed the last couple of live streams, I just have been tired and simply turn off the alarm and go back to sleep! I do appreciate all of your efforts and encourage you to keep going and enjoying too!

I do try to stay as neutral as possible (I think 'neutral' may be too strong a word!) otherwise it's pretty pointless doing a review! I think I'd like a rest from markers for a bit now though!

Wth... I actually thought I had clicked an old video by mistake. This is basically the same box as we had in Scrawlrbox -- same markers (set), a black permanent marker, pattern-based featured art(ist). Why are these boxes so flipping similar ?! This box was already underwhelming a year ago as a Scrawlrbox.

Currently on holiday in Edinburgh on a little holiday. I've been having fun but I just turned on you tube to try and drown out the building work going on in the room below me. That yours was the first video on my subs page to help keep me immersed in Scottish fun made me smile. I always think you're very fair with marker reviews given you dislike them. Some people aren't very good at overcoming their preferences. I'm pretty sure I've had this exact set from scrawlrbox and seen it from other boxes over the years so yes, rather underwhelming for those of us with a larger amount of supplies. Excellent comments on the stats of 'permanent' water based ink. Calling that black permanent is pretty much laughable

Hullo Gem, I enjoy watching you bring these Ink House pictures together and if your feeling it, Please continue it as a series! I am not sure of the terminology of the glass window and stained glass has specific terms as well. I thought you might mean the casement of what the glass sits in or a lancet this refers to a pointed point in narrow windows that lead to a gothic arch. The Mullion is the frame divided up in a narrow vertical area. There are so many terms that are so much jargon that glaziers use to confuse us mere mortals! I look forward to seeing more from this picture and this book! Thanks!

We are so lucky to live in this age of abundance. Even 100 years ago their was not to much variety. I've always been the frugal painter it's a challenge to find supplies . I thought myself happy to have the small cotman set. I have some of the professional series as well . And a mish mash of other colours in professional series . Personally I like them all. And find them a joy to work with. I have been doing more colour work discovering some satisfying mixes. As well as cool to cool and warm to warm mixing. I was blaming my colours when I was just choosing the wrong mixing choices
