How visible are they in foggy areas?
Can they be imported to Sweden?
Very cool. Would you please shot it off in the night or dark?
Some of the footage is in a dark room, the white and amber bulbs light up the eare enough that it's hard to tell. I will compile a video of just different shots of the light without the other info and try to include some better contrasting conditions.
I can obviously appreciate how oscillating mirrors are great at directional warning, however, what are your thoughts on effectiveness in a 360 beacon? Is the kind of double hit pattern the goal?
The idea was usually the double hit as you put it, the 174 does a great job with that "pop pop" look. In the Whelen case the ability to aim different colors in just one direction was a big part of it.
@@elightbars thank you - really interesting video
I like having that amber to the rear and the white to the front
They were ahead of the times with that ability in this light. Different colors to different sides of the apparatus became a big deal in the 1990s, 30 years later. But at the time "hill lights" addressed the white issue by shining the clear lamp up.
Great video, a wealth of information and history.
Never have I seen this model before. Cool!👍The Federal 174 according to my literature has a 95 degree sweep.
Thanks, I couldn't find the 174 number specifically (I have it somewhere). Most oscillating lights were limited to under 100 degrees. I really like the idea of oscillating beacons, but I can see why they were not super popular.
@@elightbars I like them also, but Federal Signal has a bad habit of discontinuing great lights.
Great job!
Ooscillaser!!! More focused beam like a Mars 88.
Gotta love the CA spec bars!! Steady burn really does work to get your attention.
This was on two patrol cars in the midwest. Sadly when they swapped it to the later car they added an external flasher so it was only steady burn in the field for half its life. But you better believe it's staying steady burn now!
Full cut grille! That a 77-78, or did someone swap that on?
Original "full" grill. The tag says 77. It's been in a garage since it came off a local patrol car in 1990. They used it on two different vehicles with an external flasher for the end lights.
Whats the approximate time frame these lights were used? Would they have gone on a crossbar set up?
They came out in the mid to late 1980s (so cross bars were an option) and were actually made into to the 2000s (way passed when the internal dashmaster version was discontinued).
Takes some confidence to hang onto that. 😂
This a pretty tame one. My Russian Power Supply with unmarked wires was much more shocking kzread.info/dash/bejne/k6iertyegcW0iJM.htmlsi=PUEGhHR5EdLJzZqa
Would they have the siren supply pulsed when installed or wound it be the driver pulsing it on and off as required?
Any pulsing is just a side effect of the power drain caused by the bulb.
@@elightbars I mean when it was fitted to a vehicle. Assume they wouldn’t just have it constantly on at its highest pitch?
@@dhewitt2514 Oh, you are correct. They are wired through a relay and heavy (usually foot) switch. The operator ramps it up and down as they see fit.
@@elightbars got you - that’s very neat. Thank you for the video and reply
The SirenO is the model actually. When this was made there were only three sizes. SirenO, Junior and Midget. The short projector was an option and is also original.
Clear domes w/filters seem to have more of a dark orange look vs true red. Likely due to the filters allowing some white light around the edges.
True, less amber and more "white show through" in person. They also wash out against the clear more than the solid domes. I like the look of clear domes, but from a performance standpoint Code 3 offered enough dome cutouts and half colors for the XL that solid was probably better.
These and the MX7000 /Excalibur series lightbars are my favorite!!
First one holds a special place in my heart
Clear domes regardless
Until they yellow due to UV light from the sun
@@SkittleKicksPlays doubt it will get sunlight inside in the collection
In the real world that was all too fast with these. Mine is safe inside but did in fact come with yellowed domes I replaced.
love those XL 9000'S great video by the way kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZIaFmtJtk7DRYLw.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/i4qEvNWYqJeZpM4.html
A pair of those would be quite the show.
Some of TriLite's "DJ effects" products kind of remind me of this, a pair of these would be full stage show. I might just buy another one when I see it.
I like it, the Red and Blue filters contrast with the Amber. I just thought of another option, put the flashers on the inboard and the strobes outboard. Either way a fully maxed out duplex is the way to go, i got one on the way as well.
That's not a bad idea, it's probably the only real move left. I think I'm ready to put this one on the shelf.
It should have been an option. Looks great!
Oh yeah, this looks a lot better, I think it works and looks great! I can see something like this being used in those situations where you're doing traffic control but don't need the whole bar on. It's hard to judge how it looks with the arrow in warn, I can see where it might be a mess.
Look like a 90's miami fla. Police car from rear add a full size white/clear center strobe to front be perfect match. I love the MX 7000 fully loaded too just too much power deaw., have a fully loaded Freedom lV now which is all most too much....
Cool!👍
Maybe swap the red and blue flashers for better contrast with the strobes
When I got it years ago I tried that, but any inter mixing of red and blue turns into a purple blob. I think with this bar "maxed out" I'm just going to leave it. It's a display piece anyway.
Much better in red & blue!! Keep it!
Could you steady burn one of the blue and one of the red and let one blue and one red flash
Nice lightbar. The red/blue is a better option, in my opinion. I always liked the duplex. Still, the Firehawk, MX7000 are my favorites.
I like it better
I feel like the rear flashers are a good option, but the arrow message gets lost in so many other signals - the strobes and the flashers, as well as anything else the vehicle may have going on. If I were using the arrow mode, I'd want to simplify and pare everything down so that the arrow message is the dominant signal, and not overwhelmed by everything else.
These bars overfall were very busy and often became a purple blur. I never liked them as far as clarity or warning power, but thought they were cool from a design standpoint.
The final patterns look good from the amber video, but the color differentiation works better. I'm surprised this exact sutup wasn't offered as a standard option. Would it be possible to make those two pairs of halogen lights into outer brake lights & inner reverse/scene lights?
Whelen did not offer any duplex bars with "halogen over halogen". The only option that went on the top row over a halogen option was a strobe, which this bar has maxed out. I agree it works and could have been an option.
Hey can you do a video how did dashlaser older and newer style came about
Red/Blue filters have been found and a new video will be up soon! Thanks for the suggestions.
Love these lights! Brings back so many memories. Just me and a traffic law violator on a lonely country road and the sound of one of these lights on my squad car roof.
The electronic mechanical siren sounds like its congested!!! LOLOMG the refurbished EQ2 sounds great!!!!!
My mic isn't doing it any favors, it sounds a lot cleaner in person.
Is there one for sale?
Personally, i would put red/blue filters on the flashers. It would help differentiate them from the arrow. Now... with that being said? I would use a relay to turn of the flashers when the arrow was in use for a clear and uncluttered arrow signal, which when using the arrow itself, should be the PRIMARY message to approaching drivers. Just my $.02
I agree with this. I immediately thought the upper halogens should be red/blue. You already have amber flashers down below.
Red/Blue would be better, I have had a hard time finding them. I am still looking, I'm sure they will turn up eventually.
The flashers can be set to turn off with the arrow being activated, I would likely do that if it were in service on a vehicle. For the purpose of the video I wanted to show both.
Someone has an addiction to flashy colored lights lol
Thanks for the shoutout! I think you did an excellent job determining which patterns to use, and I agree with your rationale behind each of them. I'm intending to do something similar with mine, only with colored red/blue flashers. That should be its own challenge to figure out with the traffic advisor. Sidenote: it's ironic that I've had my 9622 bar almost the longest out of any in my collection, but still haven't made a video because parts keep breaking/I need to switch up the lenses. But all in good time!
If you can find some red/blue filters with the tabs intact (halogen mounting vs. strobe), I'd love to get them. I wanted to do this project with red/blue but I came up empty unfortunately.
My hometown (before they switched to LED lightbars) had the Whelen Duplex bars. They had the amber traffic advisor on the lower level, but they also had halogen red and blues stacked in the upper level.
I think if you were able to find red blue covers instead of camber you’d have a more effective warning panel Or if you moved the red blue strobes from the inner position to where the amber flashers are and the amber flashers to where the strobes are could be interesting
Love the added halogen flashers! I 100% want to do this setup in my stock 9622 (has no TA/duplex halogen flashers at all, just the two MicroMax heads in the rear)
Nice build!!
I really love the 9622 with the additional amber rear flashers. Quite possibly one of my favorites of your builds!
I would have made the top flashers red and blue so the amber flashers don’t take away or make the arrow confusing
I will probably do that when I get ahold of some NOS filters. So far haven't had any luck. If you see any hit me up.
John, I had one of these on my patrol car years ago and had all blue filters across the top and amber filters below, the flashers just ping ponged single flashed and it worked great. (It was factory and ordered from Galls then installed on a new 2003 Ford CVI.) Btw, I’ll get it out of the storage one day and post some vid, cause I snagged it, off the car when they took it out of service 😉
Having them be part of the arrow just looks cool IMO. I feel like the single flash warn mode does look better with the double flash, less of an all out cacophony. I wonder how this would look on the side of the road while trying to use actually use a pattern on the arrow stick, if it detracts from it any., it might not, either way it looks cool.
I'm torn still honestly, I think making the flashers red/blue would help (looking for filters). One thing that might be a factor is if the arrow control you used had less patterns. This one is period correct so it has 4 dip switches to choose arrow style.
@@elightbars that probably would help quite a lot, it would help the arrow contrast and there already is a decent amount of amber on the bar.
Power arc was on the way there, but i have only seen it do the sweep reminiscent of the intersection lights in MX7000s
oh, and another thing. I recall calling the Oscilaser a yes no light. It could nod whilst shaking it's head back and forth. Whenever someone presents me with a question i do not know the answer to, i'll save my words and give em the ole Oscilaser
Oh also, i have seen these types of light mounted on the sides and rear of vehicles which in my opinion is not very effective
Yeah, these were pretty much only effective as a straight on front device. I never liked them used in other places.
Always was a fan of the Oscilaser. Wanted on for the center of my MX7000. However I do miss the stinger in the older single deck lightbars.
