Question: If I buy two of these Samcom FPCN30A radios and they come pre-programmed. And then I decide to buy two more, do I have to program these?

You can still listen to pigs grunting at each other, it's just illegal and requires some mastery of decryption. In most jurisdictions their frequencies are still vulnerable. FTP, ACAB, 1312.

How useless Russia technology is on these OTH radars is if need so many areas to build them. Australia JORN biggest and most advanced OTHR in the world can see as far as Iraq at best and Korean peninsula most of the time. Not sure if JORN disrupts radio frequency anymore but it used to effect car radios back when they first started. small radios Ham type also. But Australian researchers behind it say every other country is decades behind in the technology and can tell by the frequencies these admit..

Unfortunately the cost of power alone is enough to prevent any community radio service utilising any old MW site! The Magic 1548 TX at Bromborough snapped a guy and it had to be powered down and repaired at a cost of more than £16000. I can't see many small scale community services being able to budget for maintenance.

Both Radio City and BBC Radio Merseyside had/have UHF receivers on the cathedral (using the vertical omnidirectional poles). The power would often trip and I would have to get the key to stop the lift to gain access to the bell tower and rest the mains. The "wooden shed" has some private stuff - the Juice/Capital TX is in the opposite corner housed in a wooden frame covered with plastic sheeting. The OB RF kit was housed in a rack cabinet on the wall close to the Capital TX although the Radio City kit was removed when we moved to St John's Beacon.

FYI the microwave antenna fitted by NTL receive the DAB mux from Billinge and relay it on to Hope Mountain. When Radio City first moved in, the only RF kit was a business radio network (linked via microwave link to Blackpool Tower with the microwave antenna sited directly above the roof access hatch!), Granada TV vision link and the UHF radio links for Radio City/Magic 1548. One was the backup UHF link to the Bromborough MW TX and the other was a receiver for the Wood & Douglas OB kit plus VHF talkback. Besides the studio and office levels, there is also another level containing plant/power below the studios. The steel structure is for advertising billboards (the original idea was to have large TV screens but the added weight was of concern (and not calculated in the original stress tests). The signage was originally neon tubes but because of the way they were connected, it only took on tube to fail and the whole letter/number would fail. These were later changed to fluorescent tubes. Longest range tropo ducting contact was between hams parked overlooking the Pacific Ocean in California through our local 2M repeater (not linked) into Hilo, Hawaii. Somewhere over 2,000 miles. Longest range 2M mobile to mobile was about 170 miles, but I was at 11,000ft using a 10W mobile into a 5/8 wave mobile antenna. Longest 2M simplex handheld to handheld was about 60 miles, but the other station was at the top of a mountain somewhere north of me.

That whole range 01252-230 is engaged. The funny thing about the text originating from the Three network is that they have raised the Vodafone Three merger a risk to national security given that Three-Hutchison has links to China, so I doubt this is genuine, most government contracts are with Vodafone, I would like to say this is a hoax and it is indeed a Voip line with some sort of call baring. I used to have Vonage and when call baring was active, people dialling the number would get an engaged tone. Vonage is a brilliant product, way better than your Broadband providers Digital Voice because you can take it anywhere in the world and plug it in and you have a UK phone line and even comes with an app for your mobile

I feel sad about the closure of AM transmitters worldwide. In my town here in Brazil, we used to have many AM stations to listen to, some were sports, some religious, some musical and so on. At night we could easily hear stations from very far away. Today there's only one transmitter working at 12KW (Rádio São Francisco AM 870KHz).

Great video Lewis. I think , it's brilliant that Radio Caroline still broadcasts ( now legally) on 648 KHz AM (solar powered transmitter) the irony being that it's on an ex BBC site, Sadly it's really difficult to receive in the North of England, however there's an excellent app available, and they have an increasing DAB service, However for someone who's been listening to Caroline for 60 years (this month) there's nothing like AM. In the 60's living in South Wales at the time, I used to take my Mum's lovely Bush radio down to the pebble beach at Barry, where with a 20ft tank aerial we would get fantastic reception on 259M from Caroline South from the Mi Amigo anchored off Frinton, happy days!

The death of AM is driven by energy costs. High power AM transmitters use vast amounts of power (and thus money) to run, and account for a small listener base, all of whom could use online/FM/satellite/freeview.

That DAB stack might have more than one tx combined into it. Oh, I went up the tower a few years ago, before it had public access as I'm a broadcast engineer and had work to do in the studios. It's a real pity it's rarely used now - the studios had a great view, and I can confirm it sways! While there one of the large panes of glass was removed and being worked on - it was quite disconcerting walking past the open frame!

So more information for you: Some, but not all Constables at the Cathedral (due to training ongoing) are attested, meaning they have the full powers of a Constable, like the officer in your video, this is why they can carry handcuffs and a baton. Until the early 2000's some local FM stations wasn't 24/7/365 on air. Where I grew up we had a local station, that only broadcasted from 12pm to 5pm, so thay had a lot of dead air. Where I live now, FM 100,9 (Kanal Gladsaxe) is only on air during the weekends. Mon- Friday it's just dead air. Until the mid 1980's DR P3 (Danish public broadcaster equal to BBC1), wasn't broadcasting 24/7 and had dead air until 6 AM. I can't remember when they signed off.

I know Sussex Police still have their analogue VHF radio system as a back up, fully maintained and ready to go, should the need arise. I remember my Walkman radio could just pick it up back in the day, before they went digital. It still transmits a beacon although I don't think it is an identifier such as other beacons or amateur radio repeaters.
