    A comment -- on the spreadsheet (which I love; incredibly well-designed player aid done by a fan of the game and I am so appreciative!)... Why not use the Round #1, Round #2, Round #3 columns instead for separate dogfights? Then it would be easier for you to track which rolls were for which engagements. When you have so many planes in the air, it would really help sort it out!

    Another great mission! At 11:00 into the video, the Spitfire Squadron rolled a "1" on his Communications Chart DR, so that's ALWAYS a NO COMMS result, so he should have moved straight forward and engaged in the combat. Otherwise, you're playing really well!

    Great to see you are back at it! A minor error -- at 9:30: You moved the Ju 88 medium, twin-engine bomber staffel as if it was a Ju 87 light, single-engine bomber staffel (moving it one space instead of two). There were a few other minor things, but all of them were just misstatements based on what you were actually doing on the board. Great job! And I was really amazed at how you managed to turn the tide of that massive attack with just three squadrons. Good work!

    Now that I've finished watching the whole video, I can say that on this day, in this mission, you went down in history -- quite literally. Thus, as the game designer, I hope you don't mind if I take some liberties and add to the narrative experience of your campaign, even if it might be somewhat painful... FRIDAY AFTERNOON, 26 JULY 1940 The phone rang at White Hall, it's ring betraying an ominous tone. Churchill reached for it and put it to his ear, intent on listening to the report. He chewed on the nub of his cigar in a losing attempt to conceal a creeping worry. For the last two hours he had sensed it -- something bad had happened. "Sir, it's a disaster," came the distant, tinny voice. "We've lost them all, almost that. One partial squadron of Defiants returned, that is all. Unexpectedly, they flew up against Göring's best who met them in a massed formation over the Channel. The pilots reported that it was the Abbeville boys again, plus those Messerchmitt 'Destroyers' that Göring is so fond of. It seems that almost all of them were aces, at least that is how the pilots reported it. Despite all, you should know that they defended the coastal radar stations well enough. The other good news is that most of our downed pilots were rescued from the drink so they'll be able to fly again -- that is, I should say, as soon as Beaverbrook makes good on his promise to deliver the new round of Hurricanes to Tangmere." "How many men were lost?" "Too many, sir. That is all I can say." "The boys shall be remembered then. Thank you." An uneasy pause followed. Churchill expected the other man to hang up, but he didn't. He sensed that there was a gathering of courage on the other end of the line. There was something else to say -- "What is it, Willis?" he coughed into the phone mouthpiece. "Sir, there is one more thing, thank you for asking. You see, the afternoon newspapers are out and they're already calling today's engagement 'Black Friday'. In light of that, do you think a public statement is warranted?" Churchill grew thoughtful for a moment, his head bowed low. Before speaking, he reached for the glass of Scotch on the desk and took a sip. He breathed out slowly and then, as if emboldened with a new-found strength, he offered confidently, "The British people are made of stern enough stuff. They know that this is war. They know that there will be losses. No statement will be necessary. I would like the names of those lost today as soon as you have them. They all must receive a Mention in Despatches for doing their duty today, perhaps more than that. I intend to have their names read in Parliament on Monday. It is the least that can be expected of us. We shall fight them another day, and hopefully not on the beaches." He hung up the phone and took another sip of his scotch. Meanwhile in northern France, Hermann Göring had just arrived at Abbeville in his special rail carriage. The news of the day had brought him to make a special trip to his most crucial frontline Luftwaffe airfield in Normandy. He smiled, remembering his days in the Great War when he had once swaggered around after each "kill" of a British pilot. He knew what it meant to achieve such an extraordinary score of British fighters downed. Thus, he wanted to be there. He wanted to personally shake the hands of the pilots -- HIS pilots -- and, above all, the aces among them. He looked out of the carriage window. There was Galland, the promising young pilot, already in the limelight. Next to him was Mölders, Galland's personal friend. Göring remembered how they had become so close while in Spain. These men were his best knights. Still, it was in Mölders that he saw the future of the Jagdwaffe, the Luftwaffe's fighter force. There was the man who would become the top general. Behind the two men, the pilots had lined up together to greet the train. Göring could see that they were still dressed in their flight clothing. Some were still smeared in dirt and the grime of black oil. He got out, lifting his huge girth from the train chair slowly. He clambered down the carriage stairs onto the rail platform, nearly slipping as he did so. It had been an ungainly landing, he thought, realizing that he had put on too much weight -- but what was there to do about that? To cover for his near fall, he raised his riding crop into a salute and gave them a shout. As one, the men shouted back. Then, as if he was a king among his subjects, he strutted amongst them, laughing and clapping each one in turn on the back. "Champagne for all!" he called loudly as he turned again to the rail carriage. Once more, he whipped his riding crop upward grandly into a salute. His aides and porters spun quickly to rush into the supply carriage to fetch two dozen of the best bottles from the recently captured French stocks -- "What about the cognac?" one asked, and the other shrugged, Göring hadn't asked for it, so they left it behind -- for now. On the rail platform, Göring extended his hand to Mölders. He quipped, "War is good! Very good indeed!" Then he turned to the pilots again and addressed them as a group. "By the end of August, all of You, MY pilots of this, greatest air force ever assembled -- MY Luftwaffe! -- shall clear the skies over Britain! Not a single Spitfire shall fly! Not a single Hurricane shall remain!! What shall save the British people then, eh? I tell you, we will be drinking less champagne then, MY boys!!" Again, he whipped his riding crop around in vague salute, over-elaborate in its swing. "Jawohl! We shall restock our shelves with the finest bottles of scotch instead! We shall each send a box of tea to Der Führer as well! We shall force the British King to personally sign each box! The British shall surrender -- it is inevitable! And to whom? To US! To the Luftwaffe! I cannot imagine how they can hope to defeat us!" Boots clicked together and more salutes were raised. It was pure theatre. The pilots moved forward together as champagne bottles popped open all across the platform. Glasses appeared as if by magic, and the first toasts of a long day and night of celebration were made. "Victory is ours," Göring said to Mölders. "And so it shall always be. First Poland! A couple of weeks! Then France and the Low Countries! A few more weeks! England shall be next!" "What then?" Mölders asked. "Ahh, that is the secret, isn't it?" Göring glanced to the east and saw that the skies in the distance were already starting to darken. The sun was making its way to the evening. He strutted off. Galland and Mölders watched him closely. It was Galland who spoke first, "There is one troubling thing from today, right? You saw it too?" Mölders looked down, "Yes, where were their Spitfires?" "Indeed," Galland nodded, "where were their Spitfires?"

    Watching the video now! Looks like a really hard mission coming! This will take some daring and careful planning to split the enemy's massed formation up and then address them piecemeal. One minor thing is that at 11:00', 12:15' and 12:30 into the video, you rolled results of 1 on RAF Comms -- remember, a 1 is always equal to a result of NO COMMS. Though you did it wrong, the outcome ended up about the same a couple of moves later anyway. Otherwise, first class! What a joy to watch you play this. Tactically, I was hoping you wouldn't throw your other squadron into the mass melee, but you did. You lost more as a result. Maybe there's a time when you have to take it on the chin and know that you have a sacrifice a squadron for the greater good.

  • @davesgamingcave7862

    I forgot about the roll of 1 being No Comms. Based on the comment you made about throwing my other squadrons into the melee. Even if my comms roll says move and attack, I can decide to not attack? I played it as having to attack. Just curious. Hopefully I'll get some better dice rolls next mission.

    Finally, there was one other minor thing -- at 1:01' into the video, you had the Ju 87 Stukas continue on all alone to the Target and do their dive bombing. However, as the last Staffel that wasn't shot down or RTB, he would NOT have continued. In that case, he should have been RTB automatically. In Rule 5.12: "If only one Staffel is still in play (e.g., all others are either destroyed or RTB), it will automatically and immediately RTB so as not to be left alone over England."

    I forgot about that.

  • @HistoricWings
    @HistoricWings13 күн бұрын

    Another minor thing -- at 48' into the video, after Strafing, you should have marked off all Fuel/Ammo Points, so the Bf 110 should have been RTB, not turning to RAF and engaging you in a dogfight. Minor things, but they can change the game's outcome. In Rule 6.1: "After conducting Bombing or Strafing, the Staffel will RTB (see 5.12 Return to Base)." And it repeats in Rule 6.3: "After a Strafing attack, Luftwaffe Staffels mark off all remaining Fuel/Ammo Points (see 5.6 Fuel/Ammo Points) and are RTB (see 5.12 Return to Base). They may only Strafe once per Mission." Otherwise, really well done!!

    Another great video! i only saw some minor things -- for instance, the Stukas in the Massed Formation got a TURN FROM RAF at 38' into the video -- as they were within three hexes of an RAF Squadron, shouldn't they have done a TURN TO TARGET? But overall, you've got the game pretty much perfectly mastered!! And dang! You cleared the skies of Bf 109E fighters at 42' into the video! That was astounding!! That was one intense dogfight, though -- two Vics lost for four Schwarms shot down.

Per my prior comments, I too wondered if this would simply be a Midway 2.0, but it didn’t even measure up to that so will not be on my “add to collection” list. Regarding your comments about revisiting some prior games you’ve showcased, I’d certainly cast my votes for DVG Leader games (additional scenarios for Stuka, B-17 and U-Boat), Western Front Ace (return of Bruno Stachel), RAF or hey, how about taking another crack at SASL, which I believe MMP is working on an update. Got this game on Wednesday; am really enjoying so far. In first game found the IJN carriers thru Intel, so was able to send a first strike before IJN found the USN carriers. IJN TF had Shokaku and Shoho. Limited attack to Shokaku to ensure sinking her. Shoho sent her limited air assets to attack the USN carriers, all IJN aircraft were destroyed between the CAP and AA. In a surface engagement by TF44, 3 of 5 IJN ships including Zuikaku were crippled in the Support TF. IJN reached Panic levels and retreated.

    Dave, as far as I know, this game has nothing to do with the book game of the same name. Different designer, different publisher. I believe this one is based on the game that came with World at War magazine #10 in 2010. That doesn't change your views, of course. I'll second the recommendation for one of Thomas Van Hare's air war book games. MAG-23 or the upcoming Achtung Jabo! would be great. If you invest a bit extra and get the printed components from Blue Panther, even better!

    Enjoying this game after first run thru. Thru the intel function found the IJN Carrier force which then enabled me to launch a full strike from both USN carriers before the IJN found the USN carriers, both in 1 hex. Launch strike of all aircraft save a 3 squadron counter of fighters for CAP. The size of the force overwhelmed the 3 squadron IJN cap, shrugged off AA and easily sank the Shokaku which all bombers and torpedo planes attacked. I elected not to split my attack to maximize odds of sinking Shokaku. Shoho was the other carrier in this force. She launched a strike with her limited power, losing all aircraft in the attack.. Meanwhile surface force TF44 ran into the IJN Covering force at night which included Zuikaku. A surface engagement crippled 3 of the 5 ships of the Covering force. Panic result of 10 was achieved, resulting in the retirement of the IJN forces back to Rabaul. Am looking forward to Optional scenario where IJN forces include Kaga while US TF 16 with Enterprise and Hornet is able to arrive in time for the battle, as assumes the Doolittle raid was fought several days earlier. IMHO, you cannot draw conclusions about this game after only one turn in which little happens as task forces are too far apart; indeed the major IJN TF's don't appear in the game until the 2nd day (3rd turn) and then only at map edge or Rabaul. This first game showed the critical importance in carrier warfare of getting in the first strike.

    Was looking forward to turn 2 as learn so much about rules from U tube videos and as you say no one else has yet to do one beyond an unboxing. I am just getting into the game as have only had one day. I see the objective being what it was historically- find, attack and attempt to destroy the IJN carriers. Key challenge to this battle is the effort for the carrier task forces to find one another. Defeat the carriers and the Port Moresby Invasion force retreats; thus the "panic" rules. Yes Tulagi invasion can't be stopped but the unknown content of forces there adds to decisions needed by USN. The Tulagi invasion directly resulted in the USN invasion of Guadalcanal and Tulagi three months later. So while invasion can't be stopped, perhaps it's value as a seaplane base can be reduced. Loss or aircrew, loss of Shoho and damage to Skokaku was sufficient for IJN to retreat and a USN strategic victory despite sinking one USN carrier. So the USN objective for me is clear- find, attack and destroy the IJN carriers with results sufficient to call off the Port Moresby invasion. I am also interested in the optional scenario of a "what if" by inclusion of additional carriers. FYI I have Midway Solitaire but have not yet played.
