I think it was the mid-to-late 90's when I got into listening to Don Imus every single day. I loved the program. Often I'd disagree with what he or his team were saying, and just as often I'd disapprove. But they cracked me up an equal number of times. I'm not one to squawk too much about "cancel culture". Broadcasting, entertainment shows and the like are businesses, right? They ain't government. I think that a radio executive said that they decided to take him off the air because his comments too often hurt and demeaned too many people. Maybe if I were such an exec, I wouldn't have made that decision. But business is business. Finally, I rarely if ever feel sorry for people who became accustomed at some point in their lives to the 'freedom' to make racist, bigoted, homophobic and xenophobic comments. Hell, I remember being among crowds of white boys as a kid, and hearing many of my peers use the N word, etc. The other white boys would cackle along. No one got "cancelled". So if society progresses beyond that somehow, need we feel sorry for those boys when they grow up? If they become white adult Americans wearing little red hats, and they whine about cancel culture, and how "no one used to object when I made those comments back in the day (and we should make America great again, like back then)", should we sympathize?

You have a perspective I respect. Do you think he made his statements over some deep-seeded bigotry? Or with an intent to hurt anybody?

@@congerz83 Tis a good question, of course. When kids spout racism and bigotry, I figure they didn't pull that out of thin air. Someone influenced them. An adult, most likely. That is a choice, of course. My own dad spouted the same while I was growing up. My mom gave him hell for it. We (five kids) took this all in. We loved and respected them both. Which was right? Which should we emulate? It wasn't until teen years that we confronted our dad on this, e.g. "where the hell did you get this racism, pops?" He was a working class guy with a 10th grade education, but he was intelligent and had common sense. When confronted, he admitted that he couldn't defend it. My older brother said that dad told him that he got it during WW2 from other US Navy guys. "White guys from the south". So dad thought "gee, I think I'll adopt their racism"? Because he grew up in the western USA, with only white people (we're Norwegian-American). In any case, it all comes from somewhere. Whatever Imus was inside, it came from somewhere. I couldn't adjudge whether he had deep-seated bigotry or not. I do think that like me and many other white Americans, he seems to have grown up, both childhood and into adulthood, thinking he could get away with it. Even that it was humorous. That it didn't harm anyone, and if it harmed the targets -- racial and ethnic and other minorities -- well, so what? Their thin skin is their problem. Imus was making bank on it, and he had his guys to chuckle along with him. Again, I liked him. I prefer to think he didn't intend to hurt anyone. But he probably felt gobsmacked when he finally got called on it.
