A channel to show what I get up to in my Caterham 7 that I call Fern. This includes upgrades, new parts, track days, crashes, driving days, club days and much more. I don't think there is enough content about Caterham's from actual owners. There is lots of content of You Tubers hiring a Caterham for a week, but I use Fern as my daily car. I will show successes and failures generally and when doing upgrades to the car. I bought Fern in 2020 and she is a 2012 Caterham Supersport 140. Please subscribe 👍

Very well driven. Lines were good. You are drastically improving.
Thanks wait for the next track video 😉
I have two pair of speed cats for driving and flying our 7AC Champ. My feet are size 13 and I drive a home built Seven with a standard width chassis. I did make the pedal box a wide as possible and was careful with the width and placement of the pedals.
Sounds good.
Drop heads are so much more convenient for communicating !!
That downhill straight must feel heavenly, nice flowing corners too!
Hey. Its a great track and perfect size for a Caterham.
Wow it really sounds good. Like a proper race car
Hi. They are great little cars. I'm going to try and concentrate on getting quicker on track. Or that's the plan 😀
Great video James, I really like your steering wheel, what company did you use to cover it please 👍👍
Knoss stich but I don't think Joe is doing it anymore. I think others have used a different company if you check on blatchat.
Many thanks James 🍻👍
definitely getting more confident and faster !
Thanks. I'm going to be working on getting quicker. Seat time and tuition is the best way. Possibly some upgrades to help 😆
Great video James. Let me know when you're coming to Cadwell again and I'll gladly spend the day helping you. I'm sure we could get you at least 5 seconds quicker 😀
Hey I'd love to do that we need to sort that out. I'm installing something today that might help a little bit 😀 tuition and seat time is key hey.
Expecting delivery of my first Caterham (2009 125 roadsport ex academy car) this week. Very excited!
Oh wow congratulations. Hopefully I've got a load of videos on my channel which will help you.
Are westfields allowed
Hi unfortunately not it's just for Caterham and Lotus 7 cars. Someone mentioned about doing something simular for any seven on one of my posts so there might be one sometime. Alot of time and effort goes into making and event like this.
video wasn't good. A 7 year old could off done as good a job.
Thanks that's very helpful.
I need to make the time to attend this event, 👍
I think it's one of the top events to do in a Caterham. The start is probably the best bit.
Thanks for all the time and effort to make and share James 🍻👍
Thanks no problem I enjoy doing it. It's finding the time to edit them sometimes which is the problem 😆
Another fantastic video James , many thanks for sharing and talking the Time to put it together 🍻👍
Thanks 😀
What tyres were you using ?
Avon ZZS they seem to work well on the road, track and in the wet. Hopefully Nova will be making them soon.
Just up the road from me, it's a FANTASTIC track for bikes, but a little narrow for most cars, unless they are small (like a Caterham). Modern cars are so big they have outgrown circuits like Cadwell, but the actual layout there is really good, lots of undulating variation. Thank you for the video, great footage.
Thanks. Yes I agree as new cars are so wide now. Back roads for instance are perfect for a Caterham or classic cars, but newer cars would struggle sometimes side by side. Bring back the classics 😀
You did very well there James. I've seen much more powerful cars only 3 or 4 seconds quicker. Fern sounds great on that last lap, perfect balance of quality video, engine and exhaust note and no nasty wind noise, brilliant job once again mate 👌
Thanks chap. I've got 2bhp more now due to the Cadwell Park stickers so I'll he catching up with the 420's soon 😆 I'm in my garage now installing something which might help. Video coming soon I'm sure 😆
@@ACaterhamCalledFern excellent, can't wait!
Loved the vid!
Thanks it's a great circuit.
I've only done 2 circuits, Llandow and Castle Combe but Cadwell is top of my list of tracks I'd love to drive. They don't call it the Mini Nurburgring for nothing! Looks like you had a fun day James 👌
Hi yep is was great fun. I really want to go back and try to carry more speed. I've not been back to a track yet, but that will be changing soon.
Excellent vid😁
Thank you 😊
Nice one James - looks you had a great day and you looked pretty fast to me - certainly well below the 2 min time you were aiming for - well done
Thanks it felt fast at the time, but I can see myself from my footage places to improve. I'm sure experts will be able to see way more than I can. Seat time and tuition is the key. All morning I was just touching the brake to steady the car for the first corner even though I knew I didn't have to. Its hard to tell your brain sometimes. Once you know the car can do it then its all good and onto the next thing to improve. I'd like to go back and carry on learning from where I left off.
Well done, it looks like you had a fantastic day, pretty good track time too
Thanks yes I really enjoyed Cadwell. Still lots of time on the track especially the first 2 corners and generally my exit speeds. My friend gave me a tip for corner exits which I'll try and put into practice in a couple of weeks. If it works I'll let you guys know.
Really enjoyed this! I like to think if I had a Caterham I’d challenge myself to almost use it daily. Life is too short to drive boring cars.
Hi thanks. Yes I totally agree which is why I daily Fern. Even when I'm stuck in a traffic jam or getting wet in the rain, I'm sure I'm having more fun than probably everyone around me. It's always an adventure.
@@ACaterhamCalledFern it’d be good to see a typical day when daily driving a caterham. Like how often you need to faff with the roof etc. if you could add 1 creature comfort what would it be?
Another great video - which inspired me to get some aluminum mirror mounts together with Spa convex mirrors. They were very expensive but worth every penny and are a great upgrade. You do not realize how rubbish the standard ones are until you try these. Keep up your great channel!
Thanks chap and glad you like them. I tried to show show on the video the differences, but like you say until you have them you don't realise how bad the standard mirrors are.
Good video. You’ve got a great positive attitude and very little ego, making it a delight to listen to you. Great driving too!
Thank you. I'm going back soon so will see if I can beat my best lap time. Hopefully or the changes I've made have been for nothing 😆
Do you have any room left for an overnight bag. I was thinking of going away for the weekend with my wife...
Hi yes and the half hood can go behind the seats or on top of the boot. There are also e bags that go on top of the boot. There is lots of room in the boot you just need to use it wisely. There is loads of space in the passenger footwell as well. Even with a passenger they can normally put a bag under their legs or put the bag at the end of the footwell.
0:31 Hello 👋
Oh cool and you waved so top marks 😀
Well blow my socks off! After commenting on your last F&C run video James that I was looking for my mate Steve and his car but couldn't find him, he was the 2nd car driving by at the start of this video! Yellow Caterham with yellow roll bar 👍 oh yeah, and bald head clearly visible. Stick a hat on Stevie, you don't want heatstroke matey.
Oh cool glad I got him. It wasn't really the day for sun burn. A hat to protect his head from the rain might have been better 😆
@@ACaterhamCalledFern 😂😂
Love to do this 1st need to buy 1 lol. So much choice . I'm 60 not a boy racer don't mind power . Had 1600 sigma remapped and sport exhaust Morgan. Would upgrade to Duratec 2L . Do 2500 miles a yr so could be a 70% daily . Looked at 270S 310 R 360R and back at 175 Supersport...all good . Prefer a comfy tourer with power leather seats .heater 12v USB . Half hood . Any ideas most appreciated. Love the vids .
Thanks I appreciate that. There's loads of options and different cars work for different people especially when it comes to seats. I'd advise going somewhere that has a load of cars so you can try the different options. Lots of things are replaceable.
@ACaterhamCalledFern great stuff thankyou . tried to subscribe can't find the symbol or option
Thx James, I love seeing all the different se7ens. They are very much the road version of the iconic spitfire!
Thanks yep they are very great looking cars I think. Great to see so many variations.
Not a Caterham owner (considering) but I agree 100% to your comment that a car is a COMPLETELY different animal on track then any spirited driving you can do on a public road. If you have any sports car, you owe it to yourself to do at least 1 track day to see what that feels like.
Hey yep that's completely true. It's hard to explain until you have driven on track and got everything warm.
@@ACaterhamCalledFern Beyond everything being warm, you're able to push to velocities/accelerations that you'd go to jail for on the street.
@solacedagony1234 haha true.
@@ACaterhamCalledFern Have you driven Miatas or other small sports cars? If so, can you compare the Caterham to the experience of driving those?
Thank you James, that’s a great video
Thank you glad you liked it 😀
It's nice to see all of the cars there at the start 👍 also it was nice to see some of The Kent Sevens featured of which I've just become a member of & looking forward to getting out with them as soon as I have the registration details through for my Striker (Yes not a Caterham but still a 7) 😉 Shame this run is for Caterham's only as it looks like a lot of fun.
You will have a great time with the Kent 7's I'm sure. I need to come down for a drive sometime. I'm more interested what my sticker would say 😆
p3 4:12 💪 Great to say hello James!
@whiterosedrives yep it was good to have a chat. We should do a collaboration some time.
Did it sound better after this ?
Hi yes I think this air filter makes it sound better.
@@ACaterhamCalledFern was the before and after with the clean noticeable thinking of cleaning mine ?
@bennrayson9291 oh I thought you meant sounded better compared to the standard air filter. I dont think it sounded any different because of the clean. You should keep them clean though you will be surprised how much dort comes out when cleaning.
Another nice video James, well done. Although I follow your channel avidly I actually own a Westfield (please don't shoot me 😂) I was looking for my mate's Caterham (he's also a Steve) but couldn't spot it. I often wonder what would happen if the Caterham fish and chip run came across a Westfield that just happened to be out on the same roads that day 😂 What struck me most about seeing all those Cats was how few yellow ones there were, whereas with Westfields I'd say its probably the most common colour. Mine is orange though and called The Flying Carrot. Looking forward to your next installment 👍
Hi Steve. Flying carrot is a great name 🥕 I've not driven a Westfield or any other kit car. I would like to though to see how different they are to drive. I'm glad it's not just Caterham owners that follow me. I think colours come round in phases. Yellow did seem vert popular, but purple and grey seem very popular at the moment. Yellow is actually my favourite colour and I've owned a yellow ibiza cupra which is the only new car I've owned. There were so many bugs and insects that used to surround that car because of the colour. It put me off buying a yellow Caterham as I thought that wouldn't be ideal for an open top car. Funny thing is green isn't much better 😆
@@ACaterhamCalledFern yep, you are right about bugs, particularly wasps, they swarm around yellow cars! I've not found the same issue with orange thankfully. Purple is actually my favourite colour and Nardo grey looks brilliant but given that some drivers don't seem capable of seeing an orange car coming up the road like a missile I'd be even more worried in a car that's not so brightly coloured. I've had more than one SUV pull out on me at speed even with my headlights on! Keep up the great work James 👍
@steverabbits thanks chap. Yep I know exactly what you mean. I do like the grey and a colourful stripe and roll cage works well I think. I personally like anything brightly coloured. A coloured roll cage makes a big difference being seen I think.
Hi James, can you simultaneously link more than one device e.g. Bluetooth passenger headset, mobile phone and satnav? Thanks. Simon
Hi if you have the Bluetooth headset connected to your phone then you can have music and Google maps say from your phone at the same time. Or another app for maps on your phone.
Thanks James. Spotted you on this year’s fish and chip run I was right behind you (or was it in front!?) for a while in the black mountains. A really great drive in spite of hitting some heavy rain at one point
Oh you should have asked me a about the headsets then ans you could have tried it.
Hah! That looks like brilliant fun. Ace video mate 😂👍🏼
Thanks Mark I think it turned out pretty well. Now I just need to be able to drift like that now 😆
Can you do that in your Caterham
Potentially yes, but I don't have the skill. Maybe one day with a load of tuition. The drift cars used aren't much different to a road car.
@ACaterhamCalledFern another reason why I want to buy a caterham. Nice
she diidnt touch the cone at the end so it doesnt count :p
True fact disqualified 😆
I've had a Westfield for over 20 years, I think most accidents and close calls come from a "i'm bigger, they'll stop" attitude, I mean my car is bright yellow, I drive with the lights on all the time, it's 100+ db exhaust noise and people STILL do stuff like this.
Yep it happens alot doesn't it. People just don't see you as we are low. There was no way at all that this guy was stopping at the roundabout though.
Awesome clip!! Thank you for kitting out the Caterham Drift Experience car with all your camera's. I done a Caterham Drift Experience, and they are enormous fun :) Your clip to me is also quite instructional: in seeing Sam putting in steering corrections. I would love to be able to do such a tight donut around a cone!
Yer Sam is great at drifting. She was so close to the cone. Watching it back she doesn't make much steering adjustments which was very interesting. It was a great experience with Sam.
I’ve had a CSR 260 with an aeroscreen, 6speed box and a 3:92 LSD - I’ve tracked it for past 10 years and given it everything it needs to stay on the asphalt - not a cheap pastime! There are very few faster cars around a given circuit, but even the ones that are quicker, I doubt they’re having as much fun!!
Oh wow 10 years that's ace. Yes I totally agree. Even at 30mph I bet us Caterham owners are having more fun than most other drivers. They are great little cars aren't they.
Thanks for visiting. Was a pleasure to answer the questions and help the channel! Spot on video too 👏🏻
Thanks I really appreciate it and thanks for answering the questions. I think the video turned out pretty well. If you want to share it anywhere that would be ace. Maybe I need to come back to get some more horses at some point 🐎 🐴 😀
Here's a comment from my other channel to help with the algorithm. Great stuff as always, man.
Ha ha thanks hopefully the algorithm is watching 👀 😀
This is one of the most thorough videos about all this stuff. Super handy information for caterham and locost people alike.
Thanks I really appreciate that 🙂
Another fantastic video James, many thanks for taking the time to make it and share, it was very informative 🍻
Thanks hopefully it will be helpful for other owners.
Have you considered how additional stickers will impact the corner weighting?
Most importantly each sticker gives you an extra 1bhp 😆
I want!!!
Hi Bert, book yourself in I wish I had done this sooner. I've noticed a massive difference, but this obviously depends what your car is set up like in the first place.
@@ACaterhamCalledFern I tried… they’re booked up before my Italian trip…
@BERTVVANHORCK get booked in for when you are back. They are worth the wait and booked up for a reason.
Thank you James, good insight plus promotion for Northampton Motor Sport, showing they are approachable, friendly, experienced with a fantastic set up. BEST VIDEO YET.
Thanks I wish I had booked Fern in for this as soon as I bought her. It's a massive improvement and I can't wait to get Fern on track. Northampton Motorsport are a great company and It was great chatting with James. I really appreciated their hospitality and letting me create this video.
