Ovens Rocky Mountain Bushcraft

Ovens Rocky Mountain Bushcraft

Canadian native, Greg Ovens, has been studying outdoor survival and bushcraft since the age of 12. He spent the past 30 years living among the Canadian Rocky Mountains in the Columbia Valley of British Columbia, where he enjoys testing his hunting, fishing, hiking, and bush-crafting skills. Being a drywaller by trade, combined with his passion for outdoors, it’s no surprise that he also prides himself in being able to build a shelter out of just about anything.

Recently, Greg was on Season 3 of History Channel’s “Alone”, where he survived with no human contact for 51 days (over seven weeks) before hypothermia caught up with him in the Patagonian wilderness. He’s launching this channel with the video series, “30 Day Survival Challenge”, where he and Zachary Fowler (“Alone” Season 3 Winner) venture out into the Canadian Rockies of British Columbia, where the only rule is: if you want to eat, you have to catch and cook it.

Please contact Greg on email or Facebook Messenger.

I've seen that before but nobody ever really explained it the way that you did this reminds me that I'd like to have a nice magnifying glass that's part of my kit. The cool thing is that for a couple of bucks you can buy a whole box of Ziploc bags.

Modern canned food like chef boyardee often has a plastic liner inside the can. Don’t cook in the can. Be better to make yourself a foil bowl.

How is that possible to be in bear territory in the woods and not keep in mind to have a firearm at an arm length away? I understand wandering away leaving the firearm back at the campsite perhaps to use the bathroom or to do a little scouting. That’s when your sidearm comes in handy.

I loved this bush challenge, and learned a lot from it. Thank God for Amos! If it wasn’t for him, Greg and the dog, would have starved! Amos just kept chugging along, with his positive attitude, and did not say anything negative, the whole time! He was grateful to carry the load, and did it with a smile, the whole time! Greg, you got yourself a great friend for life. We need more people like this, in our world, to show how to struggle, in a positive light!

That’s a great story. I needed to hear that. As you were telling about that fish all tangled under the water, I thought, “That sounds like my own life. I can see what needs to happen but can’t seem to get it done.” But when you told about that same fish floating back down the stream, it gave me so much encouragement that everything is going to work out and get better. Thank you for sharing.
